AIBU to ask about the creepiest thing that has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?

I realise threads like these have probably been done to death but I am super bored and struggling to find anything to watch/read.

I have had a couple of weird experiences at the house where I work as a nanny. When I started there I didn't feel like it was creepy, but it didn't have a particularly comfortable feel. The eldest child said she didn't like the house, but I put it down to having moved fairly recently.
About a month or so after starting work there, I was returning to the house with the youngest child. It was early evening in winter, so we returned to a dark house. He needed the loo, so we climbed the stairs to go to the bathroom. As we walked past the youngest's room, he stared intently, pointed into it, and said, "Man in there" . The room was in darkness and I couldn't see anything, but he continued to point and look, as if he were looking directly at something. My mind was racing, thinking there might be a burglar or something, but I got brave and switched the light on. Nothing.
I was feeling totally freaked out, but continued as normal, taking the child to the bathroom. He then pointed at the bathroom wall and said 'Man everywhere!'. I was too scared to ask any details about said man and just got the hell out of the bathroom ASAP!
I told my boss who didn't really alieviate any fears, telling me that the eldest didn't want to sleep in the loft room as "the books kept moving about by themselves".
Nothing happened for a long time after that, thankfully. One night though, I was waiting for a babysitter to take over from me as the parents were going out. I was downstairs with the children when I heard the noise of the vacuum cleaner upstairs. Knowing we were the only ones in the house, I went upstairs brandishing an iron for protection, and switched it off. Nobody there. I tried to think of ways that it could have turned itself on, like possibly the handle fallling on to the on button, but the way it was positioned made me think this was highly unlikely.

Just finished this thread over a couple of days. I don’t have any woo stories but I love horror movies and spooky stories!

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/05/2020 19:36

@Aurea

Sound travels weirdly in the North York Moors. The dales funnel sound, so something that sounds as though it's really close and right beside you can be a fair distance away.

I've actually been a ghost up on the Moors. Quite a foggy day and I'd taken my horse up for a canter along one of the sandy tracks that are old coaching roads that run along the high moors. I was cantering along, approaching one of the standing stones and I heard someone say 'what the hell is THAT? It sounds like a horse!' and a lot of people (all invisible to me in the fog, as I was to them) muttering about ghostly riders.

Just the sound carrying and fog so they couldn't see me!

Aurea · 05/05/2020 19:39

Thank you Zap.
It was a beautiful sunny day in the summer.

I can't explain it as there can be no logical explanation as there was no space for the horse to be ridden in the steep, overgrown valley.

Very weird.....

I have a lot but I will sort of go in a timeline.

  1. I also met my ghost cat when I was about 8!
  2. My kindle froze and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to work. I went to bed (aged about 37) and a wind wooshed around my bedroom, the curtains moved and then it was almost like infa red waves of love washed through me and it felt like the whole of the bible was downloaded into my heart. My kindle started working the next day day and the first thing I read was Bill Johnson from Bethel Church recounting the same experience.
3, Another middle of the night one, I felt like my ears were hearing static and they hurt, like they were being tuned into a different frequency. I heard the song 'He's Got The Whole World in His Hands'. It sounded like it was being sung by a large gospel choir and the range was incredible. The second song I didn't know but it was being led by a female gospel singer with an incredible voice.
  1. I have had the unfortunate experience of hearing 4 demons speak. They all had that stereotypical demon voice. The last one was a week or so ago. In the middle of the night my DH (still asleep) called me a 'stupid bitch' in a demon voice. I got my church leaders to pray for me and in an amazing coincidence by terrible bad back got instantly better. (And my name isn't bitch by the way, its child of God!)
  2. I was in a pub, and this girl from my exercise class was chatting to me. She got a really funny look on her face and I said to her ' What are you thinking about' and the whole pub sort of went melty and a demon voice came out and said 'Jealous' and then everything went back to normal and I realised that to everyone around nothing had happened. And I left quick after that.
  3. I had a perforated ear drum which is really painful. I was at a prayer event one evening and my friend was praying for me. She said 'I really think you need to get your son to pray for you'. The next moring my son was waiting on this little step in his room, and he held out his teddy and said 'Mummy - teddy's ear' and I remembered and got him to pray for my ear. It was healed instantly.
  4. I was traveling and met this guy who fancied himself as a psychic and held my hand to do a reading before I could say yes or no. Only I didn't want it to happen because I was a Christian. Anyway I have a nice smiling face and I kept smiling while praying inside and he said 'Why are you blocking in' and I pretended I didn't know what he was talking about.
  5. I have too many answers to prayer - I would be here all day. They can not really be all put down to coincidence - well I don't put them down to coincidence!

@ohcorona

That used to happen to me a lot too, when I was at boarding school trying to phone my Mum.

AprilJune · 06/05/2020 21:49

I remember that one @Rebellenny. I think it was GreyLady.

Casino218 · 07/05/2020 05:01

@Quim that's a sad tale about your mum

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 07/05/2020 19:58

cinnamoninmytea was it always the same tree? It might be a wishing tree. It's a tree where people make wishes with related offerings to spirits. They're often by water.

Ginburee · 08/05/2020 22:31

Does anyone else have issues with technology not working?
In our house we have tablets etc that I deliberately don't ever touch because everything goes slow, stops working or does weird things when I touch them.
This includes watches and every phone I have ever owned.

Not me but my Mother does @Ginburee. She drains batteries on tech and stops watches. I do think a lot of supernatural phenomena relate directly to electrical activity in the brain. As a child, I remember seeing blue flashes if my Mum was angry or sad.

CountArthursgroupie · 09/05/2020 09:51

Long ago probably in the seventies, I was going home in the dark passing a block of flats. On the grass in front there was a shed type of building, just a large wooden cube really, with a door that was padlocked. A child's voice came from the shed, I couldn't tell whether male or female, calling for help. When I stopped they said they'd been locked in by their friends who had gone home. I didn't know what to do (no mobile phones back then), so I ran and knocked on the nearest door in the block, I thought they might be able to call the caretaker or something. The man who answered looked most suspicious but came out to the shed and - nothing. I called, no reply, no giggling or sound of kids running away, nothing. The man looked at me like I was mad, I apologised, and stood there for a little longer listening, but nothing. After all these years I still wonder what the hell was going on!

Pollymalex104 · 09/05/2020 10:14

I was washing up late at night and idly staring out of the window. Suddenly a man ran past the window. I can still see it as clearly as anything - his posture was that of someone running very fast, but what stood out was the loosely gathered white shirt. I called to my husband that someone was in the garden but when we went out it was empty. Nothing particularly unusual except:
Where he was running was an empty flower bed - no footprints.
At the speed and direction he was going, the only way out was through our full height garden gate which was propped shut and locked. It was half off its hinges, so would had to have been half lifted to open it and was padlocked. Our garden was fully enclosed on all sides, either by fence or wall.
I have no explanation. At the time I thought he was real, until we looked outside. He literally vanished. I often wonder what the story was behind him. He looked as if he was fleeing from something and was as clear as day for those split seconds.

Pollymalex104 · 09/05/2020 10:16

@counarthursgroupie Sorry, I also meant to say your story reminds me of a scene from The Sixth Sense. Creepy.

SilverOtter · 09/05/2020 13:25

@Ginburee yes I experience this all the time. I'm like the kiss of death for electrical equipment of any kind. Lightbulbs always seem to pop when I am angry/distressed, and every car I've ever had has gone wrong electrically!

Ginburee · 09/05/2020 17:25

Sleep and Silver, thank you. At work even my picture on the computer system is set out totally different to other peoples, it baffles IT.
My husband has a new tablet and I am not allowed to use it because so much tech has gone wrong when I touch it.

wishihadagoodone · 09/05/2020 18:26

Not me but my eldest sister.

Actually half sister (same DM).
When I was only a baby, her paternal grandmother passed away. DSis has been really close with her as she had been the first grandchild on that side of the family. She was about 4 years old maybe?
Anyway, DM explained best she could that DSis grandmother had gone to heaven and they wouldn't be able to see her anymore but they could always remember her etc.

DSis comes downstairs one morning and announces to DM and my DF that she saw her granny last night.
DM tried again to explain that granny was in heaven, remember?
DSis was adamant that granny was in her room and sat on her bed and told her that she shouldn't be sad that she's gone because she'll always be watching over her and she would stay with her until she went to sleep.
DM just assumed DSis had a dream until she went into her room and was struck by the incredibly overpowering smell of perfume. The same obscure brand that her exMIL used to wear.

DM is not a fan of the "woo" even in its seemingly benign and freaked the fuck out. Phoned the local priest who came round to bless the room and speak to DSis.
DSis up until now didn't seem phased. After all, it was just her granny. But by now, she was so freaked out that to this day, she sleeps with a light on!

CountArthursgroupie · 09/05/2020 19:30

@Pollymalex104 that has helped my peace of mind not at all!

Iadoremylabrador · 09/05/2020 22:23

Stayed in a house in Hastings that was owned by a friend of my parents. It was part of a terrace. Possibly the end of the terrace but it was a weird shape... maybe it was on a corner? There was 3 floors. Downstairs was a small living room and kitchen. Half way up the stairs there was a WC then the stairs went round the corner with a door off to the large living room. Then another set of stairs up to the bedroom/bathroom.

My parents to stayed on the top floor and I slept in the living room on the futon on the middle floor. Except I couldn't sleep as there was a figure in the corner of the room watching me the whole the night. It was terrifying. My mum woke up early and came downstairs at about 5am for coffee and I yelled out to her as she walked passed. I was desperate for the loo but had been too terrified to move. I remember sitting on the loo in the weird half way down to the next door place, sobbing/hyperventilating while I tried to tell my mum what was wrong.

We stayed the next night but my mums friends were there so they slept in the upstairs room and my parents slept in the room with me. All was fine but I refused to be in that room on my own again.

I can still feel the terror.

I asked my mum about it a few years ago and she had no memory of it at all. I should have asked her for the address of the house so I can go and look it up on google maps.

This thread is awesome.

RocketQueen21 · 09/05/2020 23:29

A few days after my second child was born I had the most vivid dream....... My husband’s mum died when he was young so sadly I never got to meet her. I have seen photographs of her and watched an old family members wedding video with her in it but that’s all.
Anyway , after the birth of my second child I had this dream about her.
It was in black and white , I remember no colours or sound in the dream .
My husband and I have our new baby and he’s in my arms and the dream starts with us both side by side(babe in arms)outside a door. We open the door and it leads into a narrow room, like an office reception room or something similar. Quite formal feeling?
We turn right and in front of us is another door that leads into what I can only describe as a waiting room , there are lots of chairs positioned in rows and squares like in a doctors waiting room or something.
We go through this door together with our baby and there’s no one else in this waiting room apart from my husbands mum standing waiting on the far side of the waiting room near the corner. I know it is my husband’s mum immediately. It was as though she was waiting for us, to see the baby.
The feeling I get is one of overwhelming emotion and happiness and I can see by her face and actions as she walks over to us that she feels the same. There’s absolutely no sound still. I remember her smiling with complete love and adoration at my husband and then our baby. I felt as though we were showing her her grandson and she was just staring at him , her face full of joy and smiling. She looked so happy.
The last thing that happened before I woke up was her putting her arms out to hold her grandson.
Then I woke up. Felt weird for a while and told my husband.
It was just surreal , I’ve only ever seen a small handful of photos of her but my dream made me feel as if I knew her so well. I feel lucky to have had that dream when I look back.

I was reading this thread last night and the tele turned itself on and off four times!

A few years ago we stayed in a 200 year old cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. It was very remote in a beautiful part of the country.

As soon as I walked in, it felt freezing cold even though it was a warm sunny day and the hairs went up on the back of my neck. My DH and DD didn’t feel anything.

We got the heating on, thinking that was why it was cold.

We went upstairs and I had the feeling someone was there. I didn’t feel comfortable letting DD sleep on her own (she was 6 at the time) so she slept in the double bed with me and DH went in the twin room at the end of the corridor.

That night, I was upstairs putting DD to bed when I heard a huge bang and my DH cry out downstairs. I went down and he said the back door had flung open with the same force as if someone had kicked it open! We went outside and there wasn’t a breath of wind and all was still. From then on, we kept the back door locked.

That night I went up to bed and felt a horrible uneasy feeling. I got in bed with DD and finally went to sleep. A couple of hours later, I was awoken to a huge bang on the bedroom window like someone was hammering on it! DD is a heavy sleeper and stayed asleep. After that I turned the landing light on and left the door open so it was very light in the room.

The next morning, I told DH and he said it was probably a tree branch banging on the window. So we went outside but there were no trees nearby.

The next evening DD was in bed and DH and I were in the lounge and we both heard “Help me” screamed outside. We went out and looked around but couldn’t see or hear anything. So we assumed it was someone messing about.

The next day we went out and about half a mile from the cottage (a quiet single track road) there was HELP ME! written in red paint on the road!

We were totally freaked out thinking we’d stumbled into Wicker Man territory and I wanted to go home. But we were only on day 3 of a 7 day holiday. We would’ve booked into a hotel but couldn’t find one at short notice that would take dogs (our dog was with us) so we talked ourselves into staying.

From then on, I kept getting a horrible feeling we were being watched. The hairs would go up on the back of my neck and I felt very uneasy. I stuck it out one more day then told DH I couldn’t take it any more and that I wanted to go home. I thought he would moan but he looked so relieved and we’ve never packed up and left a place quicker than we left there!

I was always a non believer about these things and thought it was people’s imagination but I felt something in that house that I’ve never experienced before or since.
