AIBU to ask about the creepiest thing that has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?

I realise threads like these have probably been done to death but I am super bored and struggling to find anything to watch/read.

I work with a man who is on the autistic spectrum. Last year with my DH we visited Beningbrough Hall near York. In one of the rooms behind a rope there was a large portrait of one of the previous owners. You aren't allowed behind the rope and we were the only ones in the room. DH read out details about the man and when he lived there etc and at the end my charge turned round and said 'He's dead now!'
After which a bang like the sound of a hard cricket ball hitting the wooden wall made us all jump!
We all looked at each other and said,
" he's still here!".

Teacup34 · 02/05/2020 18:28

The creepiest thing that ever happened to me wasn't anything to do with ghosts but the forest story made me think of it as I believe it might have something to do with the occult/witchcraft.
Me Dh Sil and dd1 who was 2 at the time stayed at a holiday cottage in the peak district, when we arrived I found it a bit creepy but to be honest much as I love the place I find the peak district has a creepy vibe so thought nothing of it. A few times during the stay I thought I saw someone walk past the window in the bathroom I thought it was Sil taking the dog out but when I checked she was still in the house. One night I woke to find Dh looking out the window I asked him what he was up to he tells me shh! Can't you hear that? I listened and I can hear creepy voices getting louder it went on for ages but we couldn't work out what was being said then there was a loud scream a women's terrified scream and the sound of a heartbeat I was terrified so was Dh it fizzled out after a while and there was silence. It sounded like someone was playing a horror film at top volume but there seemed no sign of life in the nearby houses no one else turned a light on or anything it was awful. Next morning we asked Sil did you hear anything in the night she heard nothing!!

Teacup34 · 02/05/2020 18:43

When it came to booking a holiday the next year we had sort of shrugged it off as nothing actually happened and as the place was in a good location we booked again. Everything was fine bit creepy as before but ok . We were in a shop nearby on the last day and my mum who was staying with us got chatting to a women in the shop she asked mum where are you staying, me and dh both had a really strong feeling that she must not be told where we were staying but mum went ahead and told her. In the early hours of the next morning we were woken by a loud knock at the door the dog was going mad somebody was trying to get in, we did not sleep a wink that night and I believe if the dog had not been there they would have come in. When we where packing up the car to leave there was a dead bird outside!! It was just weird I've tried to find out if anyone else experienced similar but nothing in the reviews. We have never been back!! I just got the feeling some kind of witchcraft or sacrifice was going on in the nearby wood as it just felt that kind of place!

Teacup34 · 02/05/2020 18:44

My tablet played up so badly as I tried to write that! Took ages! Weird 😮

1FootInTheRave · 02/05/2020 18:57

Was going to name change for this but I realised that ive only ever told my sis and my dh.

Family party in Jan a few years ago, I had an overwhelming feeling that my beloved grandad was going to die. At the time he was strong, independent and completely healthy. So much so he had my 2 middle children for 2 days in the feb half term and was out and about exploring etc. Still v well and asymptomatic at this point.

By mid march we had a cancer diagnosis (that I knew would never be cured despite a good prognosis).

Died by mid Jul after a very very challenging few months.

I am one of the least woo people in the world. But I knew this with no doubt whatsoever. I had voiced the same to my husband back in the Jan who initially tried to comfort and dismiss it.

I can't explain it at all, but I knew. 100% I knew.

When I was young girl 5 or 6 in the 1990’s I lived in a block of flats with my mum who was a single parent. I always had a feeling I was being watching by two men, it was specifically two men never just one and I would feel I was always being watched through the vents in the house and from doorways. I would check the vents all the time to make sure I couldn’t see anyone in there. My bedroom was small and narrow, decorated nicely but I hated sleeping in there, something about it just made me feel uneasy as it was close to the living room where I felt I was being watched the most so I would always sleep in my mums bed.
A old lady who lived across the landing had knitted/made a bag to put pjs in it was zipped with cat faces on and when one of the faces was pressed it would play a song. This thing would start playing a song in the middle of night from time to time but never in the day we would hear it from my bedroom whilst trying to sleep and I would always put my head under the covers and hide. We had a kitten and a fish in a fish bowl in the kitchen and the kitten knew how to jump up to open the kitchen door handle to get to the fish so at night my mum would always put one of the dinning chairs under the handle to stop the kitten and one night my mum said she could hear arguing and loud noises that sounded like it was coming from the flat above. We got up the next morning and the dinning chair was in the middle of the living room and the door handle was broken, screws missing laying on the floor. Impossible for a kitten to have done that!

I don’t remember much else happening in that flat other than that and the feeling of always being watched by two men but years later my mum told me that when we moved out a neighbour had told her two gay guys used to previously live there and they both died of aids and used to argue and fight constantly. It was rumoured that it was haunted by them as when the flat was empty neighbours would hear voices and noises coming from the flat and the previous people to live there moved out after a month. My mum also told me that she would always hear arguing and banging at night and things moving around. We stayed there for a year I think but I’ll never forget that feeling of being watched.

bobstersmum · 02/05/2020 20:14

I worked at a secure hospital years ago that used to be a military hospital, there was a museum about the place and it told of how they used to do experimental lobotomies amongst other things there a long time ago. Most of the buildings were still used as wards, units, day centres, medical blocks and offices, but one large building wasnt. When taking patients to appointments and for walks etc you'd pass this building and it always felt like you were being watched, and it just didn't give off good vibes. When I looked through the info at the museum it showed pictures of the different buildings and what they'd originally been as some had simply been nurses houses, the building in question had indeed been the part of the hospital where severely mentally ill patients were taken for 'treatment'. Still makes me shudder to think of the awful things that must have gone on there!

I’d just split up from my daughters dad and was moving out of the house we were in. The house was a new build but in a rural location. It was a townhouse so kitchen and living room on ground floor, middle floor DD,s room and my office and top floor my bedroom. I was working late one night - when I sat at my desk I had my back to the door and if I turned round could look across the landing to DD’s door. We also had 2 kittens whose bed was on the landing. I was typing away and heard really clearly DD’s voice whisper the girl kitten’s name. I was surprised as thought she must have opened her door and come out without me hearing. Turned round and her bedroom door was still closed and both kittens were sitting up in their beds with their ears pricked up, listening. Went into DD’s room and she was fast asleep. Did a quick check of the house to make sure no one was in it and then took DD up to sleep with me, which I did until we left a few days later - didn’t want her on the floor under me, felt really uneasy. She has told me since (unprompted as haven’t told her about this) she always felt watched in her bedroom there. I was in quite a distressed state at the time as splitting up with exh but I definitely heard that whisper!

It was the mid nineties, we had a tacky fibre optic Christmas tree which was on trend back then. Anyway it used to be able to be set for different patterns and we were all utterly amazed by the thing. One evening me and my sibling were home alone watching a movie and admiring the tree which we assumed one of our parents had switched on before they went out for the evening. We went to the mains to change the setting pattern but to our surprise it wasn't plugged in Shock we ran out the room screaming, ran back it was still on before going off afew mins later by itself! 😱 To this day we think it was our dead Grandmother who had a love for all things glitzy and had recently passed away at the time. I would have thought the whole thing was a childhood dream if it wasn't for my sibling having the exact same memory.

VenusClapTrap · 02/05/2020 21:13

@OldQueen1969 You mentioned posting stories on another thread - which one?

Duckingell · 03/05/2020 08:18

I love these stories.

My only near brush to woo is a very vivid dream which j I had as a teenager shortly after my DGM died. But that could have been a dream - felt real at the time.

Jeannie5252 · 03/05/2020 09:04

I'm grateful I read your experience early on a bright, sunny morning!! That sure is a terrifying story!

Bertoldbrecht · 03/05/2020 09:17

In the mid 90s there was a promo offer with ‘hoover’, the American appliance company. If you bought something for over £100 you could get a free flight to a European or US destination.
There was a bit of hoo ha in the press because the offer wasn’t as good as it seemed but we were persistent and eventually managed to cadge 2 return flights to NYC.
Did quite a bit of research regarding accommodation and ended up staying in a hotel on 34th street that was once the headquarters of a famous newspaper in NY. Was very atmospheric if not a bit creepy.
The 2nd week of the trip we did some travelling outside of New York but ended up returning to the hotel a day earlier than anticipated. The hotel was extremely busy but reception was luckily able to offer us a room. Unlike the others it had a key rather than card and there was just something off about it.
Dp nipped out to get something whilst I had a shower. The ceiling above the shower wasn’t solid (a piece of plastic with square holes in) so you could see through it up into the darkness above. Presumably it was removable to give access to the lift shaft that was next door. Through out the shower I felt very vulnerable as if someone was watching and got out sharpish. There was such an odd feeling I left the room to sit in the foyer until he returned.
That night we went to sleep as usual. I woke up twice in the night to the phone ringing but nobody was on the other end of the line, just silence. Dp doesn’t remember it happening - he was fast asleep - so I’m wondering if it was a dream. The next morning we checked into a different room and the difference in atmosphere was palpable.
I’m not a woo person normally and this was the one and only time I’ve ever felt like this. Funnily enough we’d been all over NY even to the Zoo in the Bronx which at that time had a very dodgy reputation and I didn’t feel the same trepidation.

Treacletoots · 03/05/2020 09:26

So many stories.

My brother used to talk to a man in the corner of his bedroom as a child. My mother also reported someone sitting on her legs and chest in bed, and so close could hear his breathing. We later found out the previous occupant drank himself to death after his wife left.

Shortly after i divorced my first husband, I took in a lodger. Who it seemed, attracted various entities in the house. Shock

He reported something trying to push him down the stairs, and we woke up most mornings to the TV being turned on, but no channel, just static. To test this wasn't just us leaving it on by accident, we unplugged it one night. Yes, in the morning it was on, but still unplugged.

The TV also occasionally changed channels itself and when we engaged with whoever was doing it, they saw it as a game and flicked channels faster. We even recorded this one occasion, just to check we weren't going mad.

Another time we were sat in the living room, in summer and he had put on the fire. We sat getting hotter and hotter until I said, are you warm enough now. He exclaimed that he was boiling and he thought I had put the fire on, obviously I hadn't. In fact it was a plug in electric fire, and I almost never bothered to use it as it gave out very little heat!

I believe most of the occurrences were my gran and grandad just letting me know they were keeping an eye out for me, but not all.

He was quite a promiscuous young man who had several lovers, so I suspect the other ghost was possibly the lady who originally owned the house who wasn't impressed with his behaviour. Although whatever pushed him downstairs, he believes had followed us back from the wood one day following a dog walk.

When he moved out, it all went back to normal!

Treacletoots · 03/05/2020 09:40

So, this just got a little more freaky. I took a picture of my old house, in the garden but the first shot came out a bit wierd, so I retook it. However upon closer inspection there's something in the corner.

However, when I just tried to find the pic, it had vanished from my camera roll. I rarely delete pictures, and particularly not interesting ones like this. Anyway, thankfully I posted to Instagram. Here it is:

For background this was a 200 year old cottage and to the bottom of the garden, would have been the bakehouse, the ovens and chimneys and fireplaces are still in tact.

Creepiest thing that has happened to you that you can not explain?
Bertoldbrecht · 03/05/2020 09:54

@exiledfromcornwall I visited chillingham castle a couple of years ago and had a bad feeling about that place, particularly after visiting the torture chamber. We didn't stay long. There was just something off about it and it was so cold and depressing.

Popsy09 · 03/05/2020 10:21

what is the name of the cottage? @Cameron2012

SilverOtter · 03/05/2020 10:44

I've been loving this thread. Never had anything odd happen in our current house (been there nearly a year) until last night...
Last night (after freaking myself our reading these stories) I was woken in the early hours by my sons battery operated toy train going off randomly.
It happened again a while later but I was too scared to go and investigate😂

Crystal87 · 03/05/2020 11:08

I've got loads of stories but I'll just tell this one here. A few years ago I was waiting for my friend to come and pick me up as we were going for a meal. She was about 20 mins late so I was stood in the window waiting. She was usually late so nothing unusual. After about 5 mins in the window, I saw her car come down the street and pull up outside. She looked at me through the window but didn't smile, just kind of stared at me. I went to the front door to get in the car, but when I opened the door and looked out into the street, my friend and her car weren't there.
I thought maybe she's forgotten something and gone back, so I rang her and said " where are you, why did you drive off?"
Friend replied, " sorry I'm late, I'm just coming round the roundabout, I'll be about ten minutes".
She was adamant that she hadn't been outside my house and she's not the type to play practical jokes so I really can't explain it. She says it must have been someone that just looked like her but I saw from close up that it was her and her car.

Tiny2018 · 03/05/2020 11:33

Strangest experience happened last year. My male cat went out one day and didn't return. After several months, my daughter and I resigned ourselves to the idea that he'd been killed by a car :(. It turned out that my daughter never gave up hope though, as one day while at uni I noticed that she had posted a pic of him as missing on a local missing pets FB group.
It turned out he had relocated to an area ten odd minutes away. One woman in particular was incredibly helpful as she would send me pics of him every time he entered her garden.
For around a month I would go to the area most nights with food and a carrier to try to get him back. The lady eventually suggested that I borrow a trap and ask the old man who lived opposite her if I could place it outside his house, as the man had told her that my cat regularly came to his garden and the man had grow fond of him.
So one morning I biked to the area, knocked on the ladies door to ask if she'd seen him overnight, then went over to the man's house and knocked. I noticed that loads of post had built up between his porch and main door and that the house seemed quiet.
I went back to the lady and told her there was no answer and commented on the amount of post. She became worried as he had attempted suicide the previous month. She called the emergency services and I left. Got a message from her as I biked home, saying the Police had to break in and he was found dead at the top of the stairs.
It freaked me out big time. I ended up at a random man's house through a series of events that happened at a specific space in time, and that random man was dead in his house. The lady said that had I have not knocked on his door, he may have been there for weeks as he had no family who visited. I had to get off my bike for a cry before I got home.

ItsABitOfAShitFightMate · 03/05/2020 11:36

Did you get your cat back though?

Tiny2018 · 03/05/2020 11:49

My creepiest by far though, when I split up with my daughter's Dad years ago, I moved to a smaller house in the area my cat went missing. There was a strange, uncomfortable atmosphere in the house, it felt like somebody or thing didn't want me there. I never felt comfortable and often felt as though something were watching me.
Things escalated one night when my daughter, who was two at the time, became hysterical a few times one Sunday night after I'd put her to bed. I assumed she was suffering from nightmares, as she just kept screaming 'Mummy' on and off for a few hours. I comforted her every time and resettled her. The last time she screamed I ran upstairs and her bedroom door was shit fast. I tried to open it but it wouldn't budge for what seemed like forever and she was on the other side seemingly trying to open it. I eventually got it open and took her into my bedroom with me for the night. I settled her in my bed and went to press play on my DVD player. At that, there was an almighty three or four bangs on my wall which made me jump. The neighbours were not in, besides it came from the inside of my room as I heard the 'slapping' of the embossed wallpaper. I was absolutely terrified and called my friends who turned up and looked at me in pity, as though they thought I'd imagined things. I didn't care, there was something in that bloody house and I knew it. I spent the night at my friends and went back the next day to grab what I could carry. On entrance I said out loud I'm here to collect some belongings, I will be quick, please leave me alone', collected what I could and left to stay with a friend for a few months. Left all furniture and never went back.

Tiny2018 · 03/05/2020 11:52

ItsABitOfAShitFightMate
I did in the end yes. I kept him in for a week, but as soon as I let him out, he bolted again, I'm assuming to the same area.

rayoflightboy · 03/05/2020 13:14

Another one.
The house i live in is my childhood home.
Loads of stuff happened here.

I was sitting in the back bedroom feeding ds3.He must have been a few months old.

Ds2 must have been about 13 at the time.Anyway he comes out of the loo, straight across in to his bedroom. Seconds later he comes up the stairs in to his bedroom. There wasnt enough time for him to go from the loo, into his room,go dwnstairs and come back up the stairs.

Ds1 and 2 look nothing alike.
I put ds3 in his cot and went in.He was downstairs for ages, never went to the loo.I never told him till recently.Really freaked me out.
