To be ashamed to be British

Every day more and more British deaths. When compared to other countries some of them third world, we have an appalling death rate from Covid 19.
Why oh why did the government allow 3000 Spanish to enter just to watch a football match when Spain would not allow them to watch in their own country.
Why was the Stereophonics concert allowed when other countries had locked down.
Why are thousands of people still entering the U.K. with no checks.
Why are our NHS staff still begging for PPE

I am feeling very very low about all of this and wish I lived in some other country.

OP posts:

It's extremely naieve of some posters to blame the current government for all the problems in the NHS ,it was quite frankly no better managed under the Labour government it needs complete overhaul and to stop.wasting the money it does get , we are in the middle of a global pandemic the entire world is searching for PPE.

Easilyanxious · 28/04/2020 18:01

All these post being out is the anti Tory people who think others would of done so much better with no proof whatsoever
Sure mistakes will be made and lessons will be learnt after as in most other countries around the world as well

oakleaffy · 28/04/2020 18:01

Greta Thunberg attended Bristol College Green {Outdoors}...there was a huge rally....but Bristol and the West have {so far} comparatively few deaths.
Cheltenham races went ahead, but there has been a spike in cases there...

Lostvoiced · 28/04/2020 18:02

X2boys the Tories have had 10 years to turn it around but they haven't because they dont want to.

KisstheTeapot14 · 28/04/2020 18:03

Also worrying is quite a few reports of 111 and 999 not taking patients with symptoms into hospital until 'lips are blue'.

It appears that many areas have hospitals with capacity, but seriously ill people are being told to stay at home (and die quietly?). Whoever has made this rule for 111, you should be ashamed. In Germany people are admitted quickly and early for things such as oxygen. Its not rocket science to see how that massive country has managed to avoid huge death tolls.

Here, apparently, death toll worse than the bloody Blitz! Sorry, am boiling over. Makes me so angry to think sick people are being ignored who could be treated.

You are entitled to feel how you feel.

I love being British and English and am proud to be British and English

As previous poster says, would you prefer this:

As previous poster says, woulThe other countries that have high death rates like Belgium, are just beginning to ease their lockdowns, to the level of ours. if you want to have armed police and military on the street, stopping and asking you why you are going out, and have to provide papers, then go to France, Spain and Italy. If you want to be fined €200 for not shopping at the nearest supermarket to you, whether it is crap or not, move to Belgium, and see above for armed police and military

noavailablename · 28/04/2020 18:03

There is ppe available. Our government is not ordering or purchasing it. Manufacturers are trying to sell it to us but ending up exporting it instead.
That panorama programme is spot on.

noavailablename · 28/04/2020 18:04

In Thailand people are admitted early to hospital and treated.

Easilyanxious · 28/04/2020 18:07

Also forgot brings out the anti brexit people as well this has absolutely no relevance to brexit with or without it happening this virus would still be here
And comparing to countries with populations of 5 million compared to 66 million ??
Only a few larger countries have lower rates and a very different system or run country to us and do people really think third world countries will be accurately able to report when a lot of these poor people won't be able to access medical care

VitreousHumour · 28/04/2020 18:08

I'm with you OP. I'm ashamed to share a nationality with all those self-interested people who voted Tory for their own pocket, which resulted in austerity, which ran down the NHS, which resulted in our being infinitely less able to withstand this terrible pandemic.

The same people - because they always act in their own self-interest, under cover of solid English libertarian principles - are the ones who think that the need for communal self-sacrifice doesn't apply to them. They will not do without their trip to the corner shops for their favourite goodies, or their paper, or whatever other lockdown-breaking selfishness they persist with because it's not expressly forbidden. Arseholes.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 28/04/2020 18:08

I've lived in several other countries. I've experienced their health care systems and their police forces and the state of their roads.

This is by far the best run. Not perfect, because nowhere is, but pretty bloody decent.

And I don't even vote Tory.

aerosocks · 28/04/2020 18:11

and wished I lived in some other country

Oh well, when this is all over, take your pick.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 28/04/2020 18:12

Oh yes we always get that . colonialism

Take a look at your rich for THAT and not at the majority of the people who were simply peasants back then
Do not look at the poor . WE dealt in none of that !

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 28/04/2020 18:12

And as for being ashamed why not sod off elsewhere then

Student133 · 28/04/2020 18:12

If it were the case that the UK was a horrifically racist, bigoted and closed place to live, the every country in Europe is worse. PEW polling has repeatedly shown that the UK has the lowest levels of bigotry in Europe, so it is complete rubbish that we are objectively any worse than other countries. I suspect that those claiming this have decided that leaving a certain trade block is equivalent to sieg heiling down the mall, which it isn't.

Straycatstrut · 28/04/2020 18:12

I love where I live. Gorgeous bit of the country and I'd be happy to take holidays here until I died in various cites and Lake and Peak district areas.

It all boils down to bad decisions usually centred around selfishness greed by the people "in charge". That's people. There are a very, very select few people I like.

ProfessorPootle · 28/04/2020 18:20

I agree with pp thegcatsmother

We’re working together in a difficult situation, yes things could have been done earlier, planning could have been better but considering we are a densely populated Island 9England especially densely populated) I think we’ve done ok. I think we’ve got the right combination of people still able to go to work and businesses able to continue trading with social distancing in place. Italy, Spain, France much stricter controls but at what price to people’s mental health and the survival of the economy?Albania has a weekend curfew, it’s shoot on sight if you’re seen on the streets, Friday night to Monday morning, if you want to complain complain about that.

Guylan · 28/04/2020 18:21

I am not ashamed of being British. I do though think our political system is poor. I would love proportional representation in elections for example. Wealth and prosperity concentrated in too few areas across the country and this began under Thatcher and continues until now.

noavailablename · 28/04/2020 18:25

We should have been testing, isolating, treating early, supplying ppe to all nhs and carers, not discharging infected elderly people back to care homes starting in at least February.
There is no excuse.
This government simply didn't bother, didn't take it seriously, didn't listen to the warnings.

Justanotherlurker · 28/04/2020 18:28

Exactly, anyone using a point scoring stat is unironically themselves rather dense.

Anyone who is screaming "but why didn't we lock down earlier" have little understanding of us being an international hub, it makes them look worse when they compare the UK to places like NZ, when only a part of London has the total population of NZ, it points to them wanting to just hate on the government, there is no critical thinking going on.

CendrillonSings · 28/04/2020 18:29

Personally, I’ve always been proud to be British, and rarely more so than in a crisis like this. The only criticism I’d ever make of my country is that it has a loud fraction of its population devoted to ostentatious and irrational displays of self-loathing...

walkingchuckydoll · 28/04/2020 18:29

As an EU citizen I wouldn't be ashamed if I was british, although I don't totally agree on the politics (but I feel the same about my own country so fair enough). I would, however, be very scared if I was a US citizen though....

Agree. I know nothing about pandemic planning or managing an outbreak but there are a lot of public health experts on Twitter all saying that it’s outbreak management 101 to test, track and isolate from the beginning and not give up as the govt did. Prof Anthony Costello, a former director at WHO said today he and other colleagues were shocked at the unbalanced make up of the scientific advisory board to the govt. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/27/gaps-sage-scientific-body-scientists-medical?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Something went badly awry and I would be interested to know why. Is it because we have had govts in recent decades that have not recognised the benefit of the State to protect citizens and outsourced everything? Why was the make up of the science board so inadequate?

Clavinova · 28/04/2020 18:37

"In Wolfsburg, west of Berlin, 22 people died in the same nursing home."
