To think getting dressed everyday will make me feel better

I have not worn makeup or done hair since lockdown.

Would it make a difference in my mood to get dressed every day and put on a full face?

Does it help anyone feel better?

I’ve worn clothes and makeup every day, we have our nanny here though. The kids get dressed, we all get dressed.

I think it must help to keep life a little normal

formerbabe · 28/04/2020 08:50

I do my make up every day...if I don't I start on a downward spiral. I don't dress up or wear anything special but that's because I'm fat and nothing fits.

Acidrain · 28/04/2020 08:51

On Saturday I got dressed into nice summer clothes, done my hair and makeup as I would if I'm leaving the house and felt amazing!
I've started to dress everyday as if I'm leaving the house, not for work or for drinks but if I was going for a coffee and shopping with friends. Its been fantastic for my motivation to get jobs done etc instead of sitting watching tv/reading all day

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/04/2020 08:51

I get showered, dressed and made up every morning as I would do normally. I would end up sinking otherwise. The only difference to normal is I'm not putting on the gym kit I normally live in because I can't do the type of exercise I normally do. So I choose a nice outfit every day and put on some perfume. It feels much better and I'm getting a lot more wear out of clothes I'd normally reserve for the weekend or going out. Put that dress on, why not? Smile

Laurie01 · 28/04/2020 08:53

So I notice you were still up typing at 2am! I suggest going to bed earlier, getting up earlier, shower and put a little makeup on, it has definitely helped me.

HelenaJustina · 28/04/2020 08:55

I’m still going into work (key worker) and am not dressing in jeans like some colleagues. Whilst I’m not as smart as I am usually, I’m finding that wearing work attire makes me feel better and more on top of things! It’s all in my head!

MrsTumbletap · 28/04/2020 08:56

I would feel really down in my pjs all day. Not sure why but it definitely changes my mood.

I lounged first the first two days of lockdown but felt weird, if it's a random Saturday I love a pj day. But because I know this will be for a long time I need some routine, so now I am always showered and dressed by 10:00. I do actually put a bit of make up on too, just under eye brighter, concealer on any spots and a bit of mascara.

Otherwise I look in the mirror and think 'dear god I will scare the postman'

Serendipity79 · 28/04/2020 08:59

Ive put all of my work clothes away and Im living in normal everyday clothes. But I do make sure we all get up and get dressed every day or the kids would all insist that every day was a pyjama day. Mentally it seems to help me to keep the distinction between bedtime and daytime!

Comenext · 28/04/2020 09:00

@MrsTumbletap Otherwise I look in the mirror and think 'dear god I will scare the postman'
You took the words right out of my mouth!

FreakStar · 28/04/2020 09:00

I've bought some lovely new 'loungewear' to wear which is a great mood lifter. I'm also having a shower every morning, and putting on makeup- I'm taking the chance to do looks I wouldn't normally do for everyday- experimenting with bright lipsticks and funky eyeshadow- no-one sees me much so it's a good chance to try out different things while I have the time.

AuntieMarys · 28/04/2020 09:01

I seem to live in gym gear and walking trousers and boots every day. But I do blow dry my hair every 3 days even if it's just being pinned up, as it makes me feel a hell of a lot better.

Trueperfectionhastobeimperfect · 28/04/2020 09:05

I've been getting up, into workout clothes, doing a workout/walk/run then shower and dressed.
I usually have my nails done (gels i do myself) make up and dye my hair every few weeks.
Thought i would use this time to give everything a break, my nails were dry and weak, so no gels for 6 weeks now an they're so much stronger and healthier.
My skin is the clearest it's ever been, and the sun has brought out my freckles which makes my face look fresh and young, i do put mascara on every now and again though.
I have about 2 inches of grey hair but not dyed or used any heat on it since lockdown and I can really tell the difference in it.
All of these things have given me a boost, to see the little positive changes. Although I may treat myself and do my toe nails this week, something really bright and fresh to make me smile Smile

It's about doing what you need to do to get through this time with your mental health intact.

bargainattic · 28/04/2020 09:06

I have to get up and dressed for dc and I always put on mascara etc because otherwise they look at me as though I have turned into a t rex. I think it does affect mood if you put on make up and stuff. I think losing a few days is great too, but after a while and if you have to do work and stuff then making an effort with appearance might affect mood. Like being in a clean clear room can affect mood. Actually I am not sure if it affects mood for everyone but it would for me.

Like freakstar, also a really good time to have a laugh if you are on your own - go for an 80s glam day or 70s green eye shadow and soft waves day?!

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/04/2020 09:07

I always get up and get dressed and put on a little make up. Maybe it's because I am retired anyway that this is more normal to me. I make all my own clothes so I enjoy wearing them and I don't always wear the same thing. What I wear has to be suitable for dog walking so it is usually trousers or leggings and a long top or dungaree dress. I haven't been to a supermarket for over a month (DH does the shopping), if I did I'd probably go crazy and put a dress on.

Do the posters who wear PJs all the time only put on nice clothes and make up for other people's benefit? I wear them to please myself.

Charley50 · 28/04/2020 09:10

I feel better if I change out of my pyjamas, even just into leggings and a top, and a bra. I put a bit of make up on most days.

bumblingbovine49 · 28/04/2020 09:16

Ive stopped getting dressed in anything but sports clothes because I am exercising more throughout the day and I have never felt better. I'd be happy to never get dressed up again.

I always put on clean clothes every day though

Frangipanini · 28/04/2020 09:17

I went to the shop the other day for some emergency ice cream and beers and realised that I was wearing flip flops, trackie bottoms, a holey top and no makeup with hair in top not. I was covered in soil and my feet were black. Good job I had my sunglasses to hide behind as I saw loads of posh people I know form my school. I have a nice tan though!

I am looking like a serious slob at the moment. I am going to need a week to makeover before I emerge.

bridgetreilly · 28/04/2020 09:18

Do it. Small routines, small goals, small steps nearer to normal all help with maintaining good mental health.

I have a group of friends who are all posting pictures each day of what we're wearing. Sometimes we have a theme or a challenge, but that's always optional. It's a fun time to try out new outfits or wear the things that normal end up in the back of the wardrobe. And I definitely feel better for it.

StormBaby · 28/04/2020 09:20

I've had a few days where I do my make up and put a dress on and it has helped. I have no idea how people sit around in their dressing gown day after day usually, it would kill my brain cells

Glassmami · 28/04/2020 09:21

I've been getting dressed every day as I find I'm so sluggish on the days I haven't. Don't get me wrong I'm not going all out and doing my hair and make up etc just comfy clothes and scruffy mum bun but I feel better in that than in pjs 😂

Tigertrees · 28/04/2020 09:24

I'm going through the back catalogue of my wardrobe. It's interesting!

Craftycorvid · 28/04/2020 09:25

Haven’t worn make-up since lockdown started. It wasn’t planned. Haven’t worn a dress or anything much besides jeans/top for the same length of time. That wasn’t planned either. The gel mani’ I had 5 weeks ago has half grown out and, like PP, I’m planning to leave my nails alone for a while as gel polish all the time makes them brittle. I was never Mrs Super High Maintenance, but I wore make-up most days and liked dressing up. I’m wondering what I’ll feel like re-entering the world? As someone who had quite bad depression in my late teens and a phase of not washing/dressing properly, I suppose I have wondered if my not bothering now is good for me. On the other hand, I’m exercising, showering and staying productive. I’d be lying if I said my mood had been sunny throughout but certainly it hasn’t crashed. I don’t want to emerge from lockdown in one moth-eaten cardi’ and a devil-may-care attitude, but I’m not sure I’ll quite go back to my former dressy self either.🤔

karala · 28/04/2020 09:26

It works for me - I don't wear much makeup but I still wear the little that I did. I put lipstick on when I go for my walk. We all need to do what is best for us and for me it's best that I continue to wear smart casual clothes and get a bit more dressed up for my facetime cocktail parties

Sparklingplasters · 28/04/2020 09:27

I need to get dressed and make up as we do a lot of video calls for work, all the females are looking great, the guys are sporting some very “interesting” hairstyles now that we are six weeks in. I have to say that it dies perk me up.

I wear a nice top, jeans underneath

tempnamechange98765 · 28/04/2020 09:29

I usually wear a full face of make up for work, and less but still a full face on non working days (pre lockdown) - tinted moisturiser instead of foundation etc.

I haven't been wearing any skin make up other than a bit of under eye concealer, but I wear mascara every day and my benefit eyebrows make up (which I usually get tinted and shaped) without fail. For me, no one else, it's just DH and two DCs here. Although I am having video conference calls on my 3 working days. I also put on my tinted moisturiser on a Saturday when we have a Zoom quiz with friends, to feel "dressed up" Grin

I'm wearing proper clothes. Nothing fancy, jeans/dungarees, t shirts. But not pjs, it wouldn't feel right.
