Are there schools in the UK named after members of the royal family?

In canada. There's a local school in our parts named after a particularly disreputable rf member and petitions have been circulating to change it. Curious to know if this is common in UK?

I'm in Scotland, it's not common here.

Is Google broken where you are?

Comefromaway · 27/04/2020 20:09

Not current members as far as I know but you have several King Edward schools and there are also Queen Elizabeth (I) Schools.

mrwalkensir · 27/04/2020 20:10

and Henry VIII

Not a hugely helpful answer. Also, not an immediately Googleable fact.

There are lists of schools on Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_schools_in_England - a quick scan suggests that the answer is not many. Lots of locations, saints, religious figures, secular figures etc.

A fair few Queen Elizabeth Schools (Google autofill), no princes or princesses.

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School , Wakefield (named after QE first)
Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Otley
King Edward VII school, Sheffield
King Edward VI School, Birmingham

Are some that I am aware of.

Do you need to be so rude? No one is holding a gun to your head to answer Hmm

Ellmau · 27/04/2020 20:14

I KNOw of one named after Princess Margaret.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/04/2020 20:14

Plenty of ‘Kings’ (usually Henry VIII) or ‘Queens’ (usually Elizabeth I or Victoria) schools and colleges but can’t say I’ve heard of any names after the current Royal family.

questionzzz · 27/04/2020 20:16

ha, Elizabeth I or henry VII have certain historic flair and colour and I could see a school been called after them.

the school in question is named after a current royal. Bleurgh.

Of course there are Confused

questionzzz · 27/04/2020 20:19

@crosspelican thank you! that's what i recall from my time in the UK- lots of area names, but not that many royals.

There would be no conversations at all if everyone just googled everything.

It drives me mad when you are with people and some one says ‘What was that film where Yul Brynner skis down that mountain?’ and it starts a conversation and some bloke starts saying he will google it like nobody else has the internet in their pocket.

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/04/2020 20:22

Erith school recently changed its name to King Henry School.

questionzzz · 27/04/2020 20:26

@henteeth exactly- one of my pet peeves too!

@Pinkflipflop85 presumably VII?

Duke Of York Military School is a pretty well know Boarding School in Dover.

Chillicheese123 · 27/04/2020 20:32

Is it Prince Andrew Academy or something. ? Who the fuck named a school after him?!

RoseyPeas · 27/04/2020 20:44

Yep. There's the Dragon School in Oxford, but I'm not sure which of the Royal family it's named after.

Chillicheese123 · 27/04/2020 20:46

@roseypeas Daenerys Targaryen maybe ? Although she wasn’t the best monarch.

TitianaTitsling · 27/04/2020 20:49

Queen Victoria School in Scotland

Pursefirst · 27/04/2020 20:49

I'm pretty confident you are in my neck of the woods OP and I just wanted to say that I hope you and yours are doing ok after last weekend.

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/04/2020 20:50

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/04/2020 20:54

Moonflower12 · 27/04/2020 20:56

Drpeppered · 27/04/2020 20:57

There was a King Edward and Queen Mary school on the fylde coast, but they merged with another local independent and now just go by the abbreviation
