I started a job at a large firm, the exact same day and in my exact department a girl of the same age started too.

We had the same (not common) surname, same middle names, born on the same year about a week apart, our mothers had the same first and middle names and weirdest of all, our partners at the time had the same surname which again was not common!

We stopped asking each other questions in the end as it was too bizarre!

Anyone else have any examples of coincidences that are just too strange to believe?!

Bumping because it sounds interesting

I've had a few but the funniest was receiving a valentines card from a waiter I had had a bit of fun with in Turkey. He was a lot younger than me and his declarations of undying love after a couple of fun nights did not turn my head (but clearly I was a bit flattered - or drunk when he asked me - as he did have my address).

I laughed about it with my adult daughter. The next day she brought me a similar card that had been delivered to the pub she was doing a few shifts in.

It was delivered to the pub but had the house next door address. A similar card with nearly identical words from the same guy.

Probably illegal for her to have brought it home but I don't think the person it was intended for was disadvantaged.

Even if he was specifically targeting women in my city, what are the chances of that. Grin

It was about 25 years ago and still makes me smile

My sister and I went on Guide camp and made friends with 2 sisters from a different Unit, who were in the tent next to us. My sister and I lived in Bath and the other sisters lived in Gloucester - so not particularly near one another. We all became very close and exchanged addresses, promising to write to each other - there were even a few tears when the Parents arrived to collect us!

The day after we got home, my sister, parents and I set off for our family holiday in the South of France. It was nighttime when we arrived and we checked in and got settled into our 'luxury caravan', at a French holiday park. The next morning, my sister and I were sitting outside, eating croissants, when the door to the caravan next to us opened and 2 young girls came out... you guessed it; our 2 new friends from Guide camp! We had a wonderful couple of weeks with them - luckily our parents got on well too! We eventually lost touch in our late teens, but I often remember how shocked we were in those first few moments!

I met my DH at the crem after my nannas funeral and he was there for his friends, 1 DS later we've been together 8 years.
Always been found ut a coincidence we meet after the loss of people we loved.

Chicknug · 01/05/2020 00:19

I live in England and my sister lives in Australia. One year we bought esch other exactly the same Christmas present!

YouTheCat · 01/05/2020 00:23

My partner is 10 years younger than me and from Wales. As a teenager I lived in Lincolnshire and babysat for a family a few doors down. They moved to Wales and my partner went to school with the lad I babysat.

We met a couple at a fertility clinic when we were looking to start IVF. They were the same ages as us, the husband shared a birthday with DH and the wife's birthday was the day before mine. We got married on the same day and needed IVF for the same medical reason. We were due to start our cycle before them as we were further along the process, but for some reason they were bumped up and started at the same time as us. We both fell pregnant with boys and had them within a week of each other.

Another one, my sister and I had babies five years apart, on the same day. both of us went nine days over, having had the same due date and we both needed crash CSections.

When I was 12, I woke up and asked my dad why he woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me a princess had died. To this day he swears he didn't and hadn't heard of Diana's passing until the morning. I dont believe in woo at all, so obviously just some mad coicidence I dreamt it! (Or my dad sleepwalked it)

Northernwarrior · 01/05/2020 00:33

Can’t sleep so was scrolling through Facebook and there was an article about weird coincidences. Read that. Clicked off and came on here. First AIBU on my list asking about weird coincidence.....

Littlepond · 01/05/2020 00:33

My best friend at primary school lived opposite me. I hung out at her house a lot and used to wind up her older brother.
Years later I met a guy at a party, miles away from home, we exchanged numbers and soon fell in love etc.

We both lived a long way from where I grew up.

The first time he met my parents we went to my folks house, he looked at the house opposite and said my best friend used to live there.

He went to school with my best mates brother but they had lost touch over the years.

Turns out we were even on a day trip to the beach together when our families hung out!

My 1st job out of uni, the company was owned by one guy. I lived close by the office for years after I left but never saw him. Then in the last 2 years I have bumped into him 3 times, once on a flight and twice at airports. Now whenever I go on holiday my former colleagues always message to ask if I have seen him! The funny thing is, I remember him once telling me how he always bumped into work suppliers on holiday wherever he was in the world and how weird it was!

Buttybach · 01/05/2020 00:40

I was in a youth group as a teen that had national branches. I'm from wales and I met a boy from Hampshire on a training course. We started dating. He was going to visit us and as we were both teens our parents chatted on the phone for plans. My dad recognised that his dads northern accent was very familiar and they both worked out that they were born in the same town. On further chatting they discovered that they both lived in the same street and his dad was next door neighbors with my dads grandparents (all 3 in one st)
It was nuts!!!
We didn't last long dating he was a bit of an arse

Buttybach · 01/05/2020 00:48

Another strange coincidence happened a few years ago. I had a severely disabled cousin. She had never had the ability to talk. I had the strangest dream one night that we had a full conversation. I woke and told my mum. Two minutes later we had a call to say she had passed away in the middle of the night. It was very strange.

just1think2 · 01/05/2020 00:50

My DCousin (1) had her first child exactly 8 years to the date and time of my DS
I had my DD 1 minute before my other DCousins (2) actual birthday (DCousins sisters by the way) my DD weighed the same as her and they are practically identical! Even though there is 8 years between them, Both red heads even though I'm not nor was EX nor did my Aunty and DCousins DF! Shock

TheSandman · 01/05/2020 01:00

My wife is adopted. She made contact with her biological father when she was in her in her late twenties. A few weeks after finding him I discovered I had a copy of a book he had once owned on my bookshelf. I'd bought it second-hand years before I'd met my wife. There's no doubt that it was him. It's a very unusual name, and his address was written inside.

Emmelina · 01/05/2020 03:11

Cleaning out cupboards during lockdown, I need to be incredibly bored to do this so it had been a number of years since I last touched this particular cupboard that holds general medication.
Found some sachets to make a cystitis remedy - they were dated 2013 (!) so I threw them out.
Next day, that horrendous burning feeling! The first cystitis infection in years

Ispini · 01/05/2020 03:27

My DH had a painting that was left to him by his late father. He was living in a different country and it had been put in storage, we eventually got it and it moved with us across the world where I took it upon myself to have it repaired, mounted and framed as his Christmas present. Roll on about four years and the painting was hanging in our home and an old friend of ours was visiting. He took one look at the painting and said he didn’t realize we were fans of his late uncle’s work.
We had been friends for twenty years and didn’t know that his uncle (deceased) had sold a painting to my late FIL who was a great fan of his work. We are still great friends to this day and still talk about the painting.

octoberfarm · 01/05/2020 03:32

I had a childhood friend who was from another country, and had an unusual name. No reason our families would be connected in any way, and his family were only UK based for a couple of years. Had him over to play one day (we were 9 or 10, I think) and my grandparents had come to visit. My Grandad remarked on my friend's unusual (first) name, and said he'd had an old friend with the same name decades ago in the police force, when he and this friend had been working on an international case as senior detectives from different countries. My Grandad asked what my friend's surname was, and it turned out my friend was the grandson of my Grandfather's old friend, and had been named after him. Strangest but most lovely coincidence!

Mimishimi · 01/05/2020 03:35

A few. I' m a hair and makeup artist. I did a client who had the same name as me. Our children's names were the same. Our husbands names were not the same but both use the same westernised version Sam. Our dad's names were also the same. She was Lebanese, I am Irish.

I did another client.First we both thought the other was some exotic ethnicity - we were both very Irish and quite dark featured. We talked about various things including our parents death (her dad, my mum). Found out our parents died of the same disease (polycystic kidney disease) within a week of each other and were getting dialysis at the same center. Then we started talking about the paranormal - my son hearing a banshee shortly before we got the 'come and pay your respects' call , her believing that her grandmother (who she learned to cook from) was visiting her when the lights in her kitchen would mysteriously flicker. Then we talked about Michael Jackson. Then we noticed that the daytime TV show was bringing on a famous sportsperson to talk about a charity she was supporting. It was for kidney disease. Oh that's odd, we both thought out loud. Then the next segment was a psychic from the US talking about paranormal experiences. Next few segments were unrelated to anything we talked about but then they had a segment on Michael Jackson. The only other thing the client and I had talked about were the stone circles in Malta and Ireland (her husband is Maltese) and we waited with bated breath to see if they would have a travel segment about that but they didn't 😂

I once borrowed a t shirt from a fling to walk home in. I kept it and never wore it out because it was obviously a tatty men's t shirt. I wore it outside of my house 3 times, and every single time I bumped into him (and never otherwise).

bettybattenburg · 01/05/2020 03:41

One of my colleagues is from the same place, population 1500, as my cousin , she went to school with my cousin. It's in Australia and I'm in the UK.

20wedding19 · 01/05/2020 04:14

Although all born in the UK, I have family in Australia.
My Aunty and Uncle moved with my cousins to Hong Kong before settling in Aus
I went to college hundreds of miles away from my home town and one day was sat in the library using one of the computers with one of my friends I had met at college.
I was scrolling through Facebook when my friend stopped me at a picture of one of my cousins, she asked who it was and I told her.
Turns out my friend and my cousin were in the same class at school in Hong Kong. Both their families had only lived in Hong Kong for 18 months

Went in a shop about 15 years ago and the 2 women behind counter looked at each other

Went to till to pay. I was in the shop with my sisters as we got to the till to pay. The women said are you triplets or twins

We said triplets

Both women looked at each other again.

Then told us we were the 3rd lot of triplets that have been in the shop that night

The only difference being the first 2 sets were men

I went to brazil for work, and decided to travel to the iguasu waterfalls. I wanted to visit the Argentinian side of it, i had no clue how to get there, i got on the bus and found two american guys talking in english, i asked if they knew how to get to Argentina!! They said "oh we're going there"!! I was over the moon and felt safe, we got to the main bus station late at night no one could speak english, and we struggled for instructions, one of the guys spoke a bit of spanish so managed to find out which bus we should get, we sat at the bus stop looking at each other feeling really scared, it was dark at 8pm, the place felt dodgy. Decided to get a taxi instead, taxi driver couldnt speak english, they asked me which hotel i wanted, i said let me get my printouts, and to my horror the email "from" field wasnt printed thanks to hotmail being stupid, and the receptionist who booked the room didnt have a signature!!!!! I said it was like "bla" but the taxi driver didnt recognise it. They said its ok, come to our hotel... As soon as we got to their hotel i was like "THERE!!! MY HOTEL!!!! NEXT TO YOURS" they couldnt believe it so they came in with me and made sure i checked in, lovely bunch. Couldnt have made that journey without them FlowersStar

I once temped in a place. The second week a new person arrived. I was telling her about my birthday plans. Turns out she had same horoscope, same Chinese horoscope , same year, same date! I thought she was joking. she bought in a birth decorative plate the next day to prove it. Her birth time on the plate said she was born at 5.17 in the morning. I had to call my mum to check after work - yup same time!. Spookeh! We weren't born in the same city and judging by our ethnicity we were not swapped at birth either. Lovely person!
