A&E for injured ankle

SimplySteveRedux · 25/04/2020 19:41

Had a bad fall at home, was standing and my ankle twisted to the side and I fell. I'm getting waves of pain, feeling sick and cannot put any weight on it,

I'm very aware of the NHS "situation!, and I don't want to burden them further if unnecessary.

AIBU to go? Not sure how I'll get there and back though!

I wouldn't risk NOT going if you're feeling sick. It could just be a sprain, but even that is bad enough. Have you got anyone local who could help out? We've got a Community Help Hub who've set themselves up to help people in need. This would be classed as being in need.

If you're not sure, phone 111? Could you get a taxi? We've still got some running where we are.

Run4it2 · 25/04/2020 19:45

Feeling sick is a classic sign of shaving broken a bone - you need an xray

keeperswif · 25/04/2020 19:47

RICE so rest, ice, compression and elevate when your sitting, moiniter and ring GP Monday if no better

Wishforsnow · 25/04/2020 19:48

The parts of the hospital not dealing with covid are not busy at all. Unless you have an xray machine at home you need to go in. 111 can't diagnose as they can't xray over the phone

recededpronunciation · 25/04/2020 19:48

Go to A and E. Between us in this house we’ve managed three broken ankles and one sprain that ended up being treated in much the same way. They won’t be super busy, they will want you to get it checked.

Pajamagirl · 25/04/2020 19:50

Go in
My sister went after falling down 3 stairs and landing awkwardly
2 broken bones in foot
Said a and e was quite quiet
Now due at fracture clinic next week

Pukkatea · 25/04/2020 19:50

NHS staff have said that they want people who need to come in to do so. You are not burdening them. If anything, having it seen quicker is likely to lead to a better, less complicated outcome overall than waiting until it is worse.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 25/04/2020 19:50

Go.

Nicknacky · 25/04/2020 19:51

keepers That is dreadful advice.

PurpleDaisies · 25/04/2020 19:52

You should go.

Doctors are very concerned about people avoiding a and e when they should go

MidnightCircus · 25/04/2020 19:52

To be blunt, it's what the A&E is for. I get not wanting to burden them but we still need medical care! I know not ideal, but taxi maybe?

BikeRunSki · 25/04/2020 19:52

Please get it treated It needs treatment whether broken or sprained (and the only way to know is by x ray unless there is bone sticking out) - and do not underestimate the damage a sprain can do! I broke my ankle when I was 12. My parents (neither of which are medics!) decided it was "only" a sprain and just left me to hobble It never really healed properly - I'm nearly 50 - and have sprained it 5 or 6 times since. I have spent £££££ on private physio and its still a bit weak and unreliable.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/04/2020 19:54

An amount of pain that has you feeling sick is a bit of a deciding factor for me - go and get an Xray.

You're burdening the NHS if you don't turn up for appointments, if you turn up with a cold and ask them to make you better, you're not burdening them with a suspected break or fracture at all. Please go.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/04/2020 19:56

Given that you fell and twisted it (trauma), feel sick and can't put weight on it, I would go and get it checked out. Fingers crossed it isn't broken but it's impossible to tell.

If you hadn't fallen then I would probably say rest it/ice/elevate and wait and see but the bad fall suggests A&E is worth a visit.

Hopefully, it's a sprain and not a break. I sprained my ankle a couple of years back when I missed my footing on a stair and twisted my foot sideways. Hideously painful!

Hope you get seen tonight.

isadoradancing123 · 25/04/2020 19:58

Go to A and E it needs an x ray thats what they are there for, accidents

LagunaBubbles · 25/04/2020 19:59

You need to go to A and E.

Lougle · 25/04/2020 20:03

Yes, you need to be seen.

tiredanddangerous · 25/04/2020 20:05

Yes go to a&e Flowers

Eve · 25/04/2020 20:06

Go - I fell over 20 months ago, heard ankle snap but was at a sporting event & paramedics in attendance said only a sprain. I didn’t get it seen to and regret it as I still have pain & discomfort with it now.

Gindrinker43 · 25/04/2020 20:08

Go, please be reassured its quite safe, but obviously don't take the family for a day trip.

Chillicheese123 · 25/04/2020 20:08

You must go. Get a taxi and wear a mask if you feel weird about it, or call family member for a lift and sit in the back of the car ?

NamelessNinja · 25/04/2020 20:09

Absolutely go in. Our local hospital A&Es are much quieter than normal and they are separating out any potential COVID patients into a different area.
You need an x-ray and if it is broken an assessment of whether it needs operating on, as well as some decent pain killers by the sound of it! Go!

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/04/2020 20:09

Go. As pps have said, apart from the covid wards (and including some covid wards) nhs is v quiet just now.

Nottherealslimshady · 25/04/2020 20:13

Its hard to know, I had the same, spoke to pharmacist wo told me to get x-ray or ring 111 who told me to get x-ray or see gp, who did a video consultation, then referred me for x-ray who said they were only doing essentials and to wait until after lockdown 🤷‍♀️ that was two weeks of pain without being able to bear weight. It went away after a few weeks of resting it and not weight bearing. Maybe ring 111 to ask if theres an alternative near you?

PotholeParadise · 25/04/2020 20:15

I'm getting waves of pain, feeling sick and cannot put any weight on it,

Yeah, that's an A&E job. Sorry. Good news is you'll get the fastest treatment you've ever had in your life.
