A&E for injured ankle

SimplySteveRedux · 25/04/2020 19:41

Had a bad fall at home, was standing and my ankle twisted to the side and I fell. I'm getting waves of pain, feeling sick and cannot put any weight on it,

I'm very aware of the NHS "situation!, and I don't want to burden them further if unnecessary.

AIBU to go? Not sure how I'll get there and back though!

Yes definetly go, that's what A&E is for

A&E. They will ask if you have covid symptoms and then direct you accordingly.

A&E is currently very quiet so you will hopefully not be there long

Sorry for not updating.

A family member took me to a walk in centre. The nurse said it displays many signs of being broken, that ill likely need surgery, but need a x-ray to confirm. Radiology did the scan, sent me home. I'll be contacted within 7-10 days.

Frustrated and in pain.

Aw, I hope you can get some relief. Do you have painkillers ? Get it elevated

womaninatightspot · 25/04/2020 21:23

Bloody hell 7-10 days that's awful. Hope they gave you some kick ass painkillers. I broke my wrist nastily and needed surgery at the turn of the year but was kept in and operated on in the morning. Sad to hear how much things have slowed down with the pandemic.

Pain killer wise they gave me codiene, paracetamol and liquid morphine to take at home in a pinch. Was awfully good for sending me straight to sleep so I had some at bedtime for a week. I wouldn't be afraid of asking your doctor for painkillers to get you through if not.

SimplySteveRedux · 25/04/2020 21:28

Offered me paracetamol.

Thankfully I have drugs like tramadol and oxycodone at ho,e (prescribed for other conditions.

That's good I was told it was best to keep on top of the pain relief rather than let it build up to the point that I felt I needed painkillers. IME this was definitely the best policy. Lots of elevation to keep swelling down.

Good luck hope they contact you soon.

Tbh a sprain hurts more than a fracture. Brufen ice and elevation the swelling and bruis9ng will come out give it few days

Celeriacacaca · 25/04/2020 21:49

I broke my ankle recently. I went to A&E after going home and speaking to GP. A&E were brilliant- they xrayed and put it in a cast immediately. I will probably be having surgery next month. I'm also having to inject warfarin daily to reduce chance of clots.

I don't know how you're managing. I am still struggling with pain and getting about on crutches. I'm amazed they sent you home without anyone seeing the xrays or a cast.

Glad you went, OP.

Ankles can be buggers and it's important to get them checked out.

I still get trouble from a bad sprain 35 years ago. About a year after it happened, I asked my GP to have a look at it as I still had a lump and it was painful, especially if I walked more than a couple of miles.

He told me that I'd torn some ligament or other (can't recall the name) and that I should have gone to A&E who would have put it in a cast for a while to keep the joint stable while it healed.

When I told him that I had been to A&E and they gave me a tubigrip bandage and some paracetamol, he was Blush.
