To ask whether you would support a further lockdown?

lola777 · 25/04/2020 17:40

Posting here simply as I don't know if voting can be enabled outside AIBU.

Vote yes- You would support further lockdown of this extent
Vote no- You would not support a lockdown of this extent after the current lockdown period

Personally, I would be happy for restrictions to slowly be lifted after this. Amongst my friends, I feel I am in the majority.

Would not support

Ilikefresias · 25/04/2020 21:08

Yes, I would. Infection rates are not falling, look at today's figures!

Orangeblossom78 · 25/04/2020 21:12

I wonder about the infection rates. Given that testing has increased, maybe infection rates are actually going down but they are testing more people? But previous those people might not have been tested.

XingMing · 25/04/2020 21:15

We shall only get the NHS that can be afforded. If no one is working and taxes are not being paid, then It is not affordable. Which bit would you sacrifice? Obviously the bit that doesn't matter to you.

waveafterwaveafterwave · 25/04/2020 21:18

No. I think after this current lockdown they need to start easing things gradually.

The virus isn't going away, we don't know when a vaccine is coming or even if people are immune after catching it. We must learn to live with it.

We can't put life on hold indefinitely. The only people who want that are those in cloud cuckoo land or people who have secure working from home jobs and are actually quite enjoying the lockdown. The government won't pay people's salaries forever, and once they stop enough people are going to lose their jobs and houses as it is. This will destroy many people's lives and mental health - just watch the suicide numbers increase, it's a tragedy waiting to happen.

GabsAlot · 25/04/2020 21:18

why do posters keep saying we're over the peak-800 + people died yesterday more than the whole weeks numbers it isnt flattening

NotTerfNorCis · 25/04/2020 21:19

Torn on this. Yes we need to continue some form of lockdown, but we can't carry on this way for much longer. It'll kill the economy, and people are starting to get fed up with it.

I'd say that they should open more shops, allow more work to be done such as construction, and also allow people to visit family and close friends. The rule on families not being able to see one another is draconian and it can't last. Let people make their own minds up about it.

iamapixie · 25/04/2020 21:21

Yes because I'm law abiding, but I will be increasingly resentful of it and its effects in particular in the young.

ChaBishkoot · 25/04/2020 21:22

The U.K. has 24% of all global deaths (as reported) and 41% of Europe’s death. But somehow everyone is sneering at Trump and his incompetence. (They should be but that’s not my point)

Hingeandbracket · 25/04/2020 21:22

Voted YABU
Because there is no Yes or No
Fuck knows which option is which, YABU not to specify properly.

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 21:23

800 + people died yesterday

No they didn't. A large number of those deaths happened earlier, some as far back as March. Peak was 8 April.

Itsjustmee · 25/04/2020 21:24

I would support a further 2 x 3 weeks of lockdown in my own way.
So I wouldn’t be meeting up in groups but I would visit family & friends but sit outside in the garden and not inside in the house .

I think stores like B&Q The Range B&M should be either trade only and online delivery only .

But I’m not suffering financially from the lockdown and I’m healthy with no underlying conditions .
I see my father every pretty much most days as I do his shopping and house stuff for him
My family and friends are all in the same city so even though we aren’t seeing each other it doesn't seem particularly hard .

If the good weather holds up then I’m quite happy to stay in lockdown as I’m enjoying doing nothing and sitting in my garden .
If we get typical a British weather then I will be itching to get back out there

LilacTree1 · 25/04/2020 21:25

I thought “support” meant “agree with”.

I’d observe it but I wouldn’t support it.

NotTerfNorCis · 25/04/2020 21:25

I heard that although the official number of deaths is just over 20,000, that doesn't include Covid deaths outside hospitals. One estimate of total deaths is 44,000. That means about 1 in 1500 of the population (66 million) has died of Covid. And it isn't over yet.

JigsawsAreCool · 25/04/2020 21:25

It's hardly a bloody lockdown for most. Can go out for (there seems to be confusion in diff areas overlengths of time) like a 2 hour bike ride. Then later walk to the shops to get some groceries.

Seems some areas are allowed out for walks etc more than once just "as infrequently as possible"

This is a v v v relaxed lockdown.

Those of us shielding are IN. No walks no cycles no shopping trips.

I worked full time v long hours a day and had multiple hobbies/events I went to. Lots of running. Active social life.

I'm now inside full time until at least June.

It baffles me people are finding it THAT hard to manage on what is allowed just now. Maybe try a week of doing shielding. Then you'll find the lock down rules we have much easier?!

List time I hugged or spoke to another human face to face was 16th March.

Honestly try it. Do full shielding for a week then you'll appreciate the walks and the shopping trips!

englishrosie · 25/04/2020 21:26

Nope.

BlackForestCake · 25/04/2020 21:27

There are still over 500 people dying every day. Until that comes down stay in the fucking house.

GrimmsFairytales · 25/04/2020 21:30

There are still over 500 people dying every day

500 deaths reported on a particular day, doesn't mean 500 people died on that day.

Goldenheart18 · 25/04/2020 21:33

Absolutely not. No I do not support a further extension of the lockdown.

The lockdown has achieved its aim - to buy the NHS time to build capacity. That was all these draconian measures could ever achieve.

I fear, though, that the government will force a further lockdown on us simply because they have not yet ready to implement their plan to keep the spread of the virus under control. I think they have started to do this, but too late, and because of this they will not be ready to implement it by 7 May. It’s almost guaranteed really because if they were going to be ready with it by 7 May they would announce their plans beforehand - they’d have to in order to prepare businesses/ build capacity to test suspected cases etc. What I hope they’ll do on 7 May is at the very least loosen the restrictions, so for example they could allow us all to leave our homes as we wish and see close family/friends provided they are not shielding, but maintain social distancing in public, wash hands, isolate if any trace of a fever or cold. And at the same time announce their plan for when schools will go back/nurseries will re-open, and closed businesses will re-open such as restaurants, and how they will monitor suspected cases. I really doubt that the majority of the public, at least those who are not in the high risk categories and who have 99% chance of surviving the virus, will tolerate these draconian measures any longer without a near end in sight.

Kelly846 · 25/04/2020 21:33

You know it’s normal for over 1000 people to die everyday anyway?

Death is part of life

It's well over 500.

Fishcakey · 25/04/2020 21:36

Totally yes.

OrinocoGlow · 25/04/2020 21:37

Not sure if "support" a further lockdown is the right word as I will do what we're told to do. But I am torn. I am hugely worried about the long term impacts on the economy and people's general well being from a further lockdown, especially for those living in dire situations such as abuse or poverty. But then you have to balance that with another hike in Covid cases making people too sick to work, a sick workforce is no good. And there's situations like MollieMoo has described which sound terrifying. I hope the government can find the right balance to ease restrictions at the right time to allow some people to return to work whilst keeping numbers of infections under control. Not sure I trust the government to do that though.

rwalker · 25/04/2020 21:38

no to lockdown but we nee some sort of semi lockdown with restrictions.
This virus is here to stay as they say you can run but you can't hide.
we have to learn to live with it and manage it we could lockdown for 6 months we are still vunreable at the end of that.
