“Place marking” isn’t necessary!

Does everyone know there is an option to “watch” a thread?
It’s really quite tedious scrolling through pages of non-comments from people who are interested but don’t have anything to say.
Not to mention if it is a popular or long-running thread, which goes over the post limit, subsequent threads get filled up ever more quickly with the constant “place marking”.
Just select “watch this thread”!

Not to mention the fact that you can very easily highlight the OP's posts so that you can actually, you know, read some of them before posting your uninformed opinion sharing your wisdom.

Even worse when it's pre-empted by 'I haven't read the threat but..' wtf?!

Or Mumsnet could actually update their site so that it automatically knows where you've read to. Like a billion other sites. This is literally the only site I know that it isn't automatically recorded what threads you've read.

I know how to bookmark, but I've switched it off as it clutters the page and annoys me.

Lots of people placemark because if they don't, they don't see the deletion message.

Not that I'd ever do that, of course

I've found if I watch a thread on my tablet, it doesn't remember it if I then log onto MN on my phone or laptop.
It does remember if I make a comment.
It is annoying when you have read through the "place marking" comments but I find people correcting spellings more annoying.
A lot to do with it being a poorly designed website.

People place marking only annoys me on threads where the OO us distressed. That seems very callous. Other than that it's easy enough time let your eyes drift over it. Not a big deal.

Maybe you could start a thread asking people not to post unless they’ve thoroughly researched their topic on Mumsnet, and ensured that there isn’t already a suitable thread they could join? That would soon make Mumsnet a fairly quiet place wouldn’t it.

I haven’t even come across one of the “many other threads” on it as part of my daily use of the site over the last 10 years so it can’t have been that prolific. Yes I do use the search function when I deem it necessary or useful, not really a matter of “wit”.

You don't get the deletion message if you just watch it though..

Why does the deletion message matter when you’re not even involved with the discussion?
If you can no longer find the thread I think it’s safe to assume it’s been deleted.

I can see deletion messages on watched threads Or do you mean you don't get it into an email or smth?

I think now MN are having financial difficulties the deletion messages aren't worth it anymore anyway

I don’t watch that many threads, so I’m not sure.
The only one I’m watching at the moment is the one about the mobile phone being found in the grounds of a remote property. Intrigued but don’t have anything to say yet!

The watched threads stuff is always messing up. MN have been talking about fixing it for a decade 😂

Half the threads I am actively posting on only show up in 'Watched Threads' and not on 'I'm on'

I don't get the PMK either, I just scroll to the threads I want to (re)read.

My mind has just been blown. I use watch all the time but I had no idea about bookmarking! Although I have never made a place mark post, just spent a lot of time scrolling!
