To Think That The Number One Song Is Awful?!

I think Captain Tom is an inspiration & the amount of money he’s raised is phenomenal. However, the song with Michael Ball is really not good. It would be ok if Tom could sing but he can’t & he’s not even in sync with Michael. It will probably make a great deal more money, which is great, but enough is enough.

Bloody awful song to start with.

pussycatinboots · 24/04/2020 20:06

It's very poor timing as well as it was first released the day after the anniversary of the Hillsborough Stadium disaster.

DysonFury · 24/04/2020 20:10

Dire. YANBU.

NannyR · 24/04/2020 20:12

I agree - I think the elderly gentleman's achievement and the money raised was amazing but the song is awful - I heard it for the first time yesterday and nearly turned the radio off.

Sostenueto · 24/04/2020 20:12

It was written and performed in the thirties during the war. I don't care what it sounds like as long as it makes money for NHS.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/04/2020 20:13

Agree, I think it's almost tainted hours achievement

cardibach · 24/04/2020 20:15

I don’t think the song is that relevant. It’s a symbol.

19lottie82 · 24/04/2020 20:18

I’m pretty sure people aren’t buying it to listen to, it’s to raise funds.

OhhhPeee · 24/04/2020 20:20

It’s a terrible song at the best of times, sung horribly in this instance.

Batshittery · 24/04/2020 20:33

The funds are for the NHS Charities Together, which is great - it just makes me cringe every time I hear it.

Kittykat93 · 24/04/2020 20:40

Honestly, I think what he's done is incredible and he's an amazing man. But the song made me cringe so much, I feel awful for saying it but I really could barely get through the song.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/04/2020 20:58

It’s cringeworthy.

This
War song in the early 40s I believe. For a good cause, and lots of people associate it with positivity, upbeat feelings.
It's got a good cause behind it too.

Oh sorry I meant
Biscuit

ChoppingBlock · 24/04/2020 21:34

It's incredibly cringe and hard to listen to. I'd pay money for it not to played again.

AMAZING man, amazing cause, but yeah. I turn the radio over when it comes on.

Thedogscollar · 24/04/2020 21:51

It really doesn't matter what it or they sound like. It's the sentiment behind the song and that it is for charity. To be honest I'd rather listen to it than some of the utter shite that passes for a number one hit these days.

formerbabe · 24/04/2020 21:57

I wouldn't willingly listen to it to be honest.

TheNewSchmoo · 24/04/2020 21:57

It's not meant to be a great song of lyrical genius and a fantastic melody that you play on a loop and it stands the test of time. It's meant to raise a few quid for charity.

MorganKitten · 24/04/2020 22:04

It’s raising money for nhs charities. Nothing wrong there.

MinorArcana · 24/04/2020 22:12

Absolutely. I bought it.
Not every song you buy has to be the sort you can see yourself listening to over and over again.

Nanny0gg · 24/04/2020 22:20

It would have been so much better if he had spoken his part rather than sung it.

And any idea what all the money he's raised is going to be used for? I read NHS charities but I'm not sure what that means

Crystal87 · 24/04/2020 22:51

My ears are bleeding.

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 24/04/2020 23:00

You'll Never Walk Alone was originally written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical Carousel, in 1945. It was not written as a war song. The musical is based on a play, Liliom. The song has become something of a football anthem. There are some fabulous versions of it out there.

I'm in two minds about Captain Tom's achievement. On the one hand, I take my hat off to him for his courage and persistence, and any money towards the NHS, if it gets spent in the right places, has to be good news.

On the other hand, if we had had a decently resourced NHS in the first place, it might not have been necessary for a 90-something infirm WWII veteran to walk up and down a bit of astro-turf raising money for our new NHS. What nobody seems to get, yet, is that this may well be the thin edge of the wedge. It gets us ALL used to paying for the NHS when we already pay NI.

And I also would have thought, in these days of amazing musical auto-tune and all the rest, it might have been possible to harmonise the two voices a little better? Talking might also have been an option - along the lines of Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. (Yes, I've watched a lot of musicals.)

MigginsMs · 24/04/2020 23:04

It’s dire. I’d donate to never have to hear it again

LizzieSiddal · 24/04/2020 23:07

Well it’s certainly not the first “awful” no1 song, so that’s nothing new.

I don’t really care what it sounds like, he’s achieved so much and I hope he’s enjoying every minute.

lotusbell · 24/04/2020 23:10

It's dreadful and I don't like the song at the best of times. I do feel a bit like Captain Tom didn't mean any of this to happen and didn't want to be a celeb, I hope he's not being taken advantage of. He's done a wonderful thing and hope he now has chance to sit back and spend the rest of his days quietly with his family.
Oh and I think his part in the song is talking and slightly out of sync with Michael.Ball because otherwise his voice would get lost. Ball cant dial.his booming singing voice down at all, I don't think.
