Are you going out for walks during lock down?

I haven't been out for a walk in almost 4 weeks, I'm so worried about it so I have stayed in with DD 2 years old but im wondering if I'm being silly and if I should go out for a walk a day?

I can't believe the number of women with children on here that keep posting to say they haven't left the house in weeks! Unless there's a medical or mental health reason, why on earth would you do that to yourself?! I start climbing the walls by 10am if i haven't left the house for a day, let alone two weeks!! Fresh air is the only thing keeping us vaguely sane! Do you really, honestly think you'll catch covid-19 from a quick stroll round the block?!

2Rebecca · 24/04/2020 22:19

Pregnant women should only be shielding if they have congenital heart disease. Other pregnant women shouldnt be shielding just social distancing. The shielding group are the extremely vulnerable group on immunosuppressants or severe lung disease.

Spamellahamella · 24/04/2020 22:21

Yes. My husband is in the shielding category and should be inside but we both think the fresh air is important. We walk or cycle every day for an hour. We try to choose quiet places and times as best we can.

Applesandpears23 · 24/04/2020 22:26

You are not alone. I realised last weekend I hadn’t been out of the house and (small) garden for a month. The children spend a lot of time in the garden. We took them out for a walk last weekend and it was too stressful keeping away from other kids. So now we’re staying at home.

2Rebecca · 24/04/2020 22:31

If there is more than 1 adult couldnt you go out singly just taking 1 child and avoiding parks and just walking whilst the other one stays at home with the other child? Social distancing is easier in small groups too

GrandTheftWalrus · 24/04/2020 22:31

I'm pregnant but I'm also a key worker and need to keep working. I'm just being safe.

Cannot cope with threads like these

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 24/04/2020 22:34

Yep I go for a walk everyday. Me and the dog would go loopy otherwise

NerdImmunity · 24/04/2020 22:35

Yep - go for a run or bike ride everyday and walk with my kids too. We don't touch anything and wash hands when we get in. Seems very low risk to me.

Bouledeneige · 24/04/2020 22:37

Most days I've done 10,000 steps since lockdown. I've had about 4 off due to being exhausted by corona. Sunshine, fresh air, exercise - all amazingly good for you physically and mentally.

RosesandIris · 24/04/2020 22:38

I have a friend who hasn’t been out of her city centre flat since a week before lockdown. I honestly don’t know how she isn’t completely insane. She is terrified of getting the virus.

Tootletum · 24/04/2020 22:41

Vitamin D deficiency causes serious problems. Get outside.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 24/04/2020 22:43

Weve been out for a walk 3 times in the last 5 weeks, theres me, DP, DS 5yrs, DD 3yrs and DD 2yrs. We have spent the days in the garden. Tbh we are all quite happy and probably getting more exercise than usual on the trampoline, yoga on youtube, online exercise classes, today we did an assault course in the garden. Were not necessarily avoiding going out for a walk we just arent seeing the need and with DP and DS being asthmatic we are isolating as much as possible. The 3 times we did go out was when the children had got to the point they were bored and needed to get out and we all enjoyed the walks probably because it was so different, if they need to get out again we will go we arent shutting ourselves away no matter what but for now the garden seems to be enough.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/04/2020 22:43

I am actually in the shielding category - received a letter etc etc- but I live very rurally and still go out for a long walk every day. I never see anyone and I have a son with autism who would have intense meltdowns if we didn’t get out of the house together. It is keeping us both healthy and sane. I am always astounded when people say they aren’t leaving the house at all through choice. I do worry people are going to cause themselves long term health issues - lack of exercise unless done at home, lack of natural vitamin D etc. Unless you live somewhere VERY busy where it’s impossible to walk safely without being too close to others it’s simply crazy not to get out for a walk.

tenlittlecygnets · 24/04/2020 22:43

Yes, every day. Sometimes we drive a short distance to a different walk.

2Rebecca · 24/04/2020 22:44

I think those of us still working probably perceive risk differently. Passing someone briefly on a pavement or cycle path is far lower risk than being in an enclosed room with people even if 2m apart. Getting out in to the open air is far healthier with fewer viruses and bacteria. Viruses mainly spread in enclosed rooms or hard frequently touched surfaces

MotheringShites · 24/04/2020 22:44

JFC go for a walk.

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/04/2020 22:48

No

mummysherlock · 24/04/2020 22:52

Yes I do - walk some days and run on others. I need to for my mental health

Alicatz66 · 24/04/2020 22:56

I live in a fairly busy place .. about 4 miles outside a city .. but I'm walking every day.. people are being sensible .. but are talking their kids along on scooters etc ... it's nice that we are all saying hello and exchanging a smile ... I'm even borrowing my neighbours dogs !!! ... please don't be afraid to get out into the sunshine .. it's so good for your health and well-being Smile

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/04/2020 23:07

We walk everyday for about 40 mins minimum and have done for years, so LD is no different. We walk all year round pretty much whatever the weather.

I would lose the plot without my daily walk tbh

UnderTheIroningBoard · 24/04/2020 23:12

Almost every day I go for a short walk if I'm not going to the shop. I stay away from everybody, so no chance of catching or passing on anything.

BackforGood · 24/04/2020 23:13

What on earth are you talking about @julybaby32 Confused

You don't need a dog or small children to go for a walk - anyone can.
We've been out almost every day for the last 5 weeks. Sometimes on my own, sometimes with dh, sometimes with dh and 2 (adult) dc.

I'd have really struggled without that walk in the fresh air every day - it really lifts the soul. We've been SO lucky with the weather (small mercies).

ScarfLadysBag · 24/04/2020 23:17

Nope, but we have a big garden we have been spending hours in every day instead.

Dowser · 24/04/2020 23:40

Omg yes...I’d be climbing the walls otherwise.
