Weirdly the story has now disappeared from the BBC since I saw it this morning, but basically. Donald Trump is suggesting UV treatment and injecting disinfectant as a means to kill COVID.

Obviously most know he’s a lunatic, but enough support him to keep him in power, and people will take this advice seriously and will surely inevitably die as a result.

Thing is, there seems no way to stop him. if he gets back into power, which he undoubtedly will, then they have another four years of this, in which case the stability of the country is in serious danger.

But if he doesn’t get in I predict serious unrest and even wonder whether the states could end up in civil war.

Either way it’s not a place I would want to be going right now.

It’s obviously easy to laugh at trump from the sidelines, but people are having to live under this....

Every time I watch Trump and his terrified courtiers I reckon this is what it must have been like to have been at the court of Henry VIII in his later years, and then the courts of Bloody Mary, and Elizabeth I....

He's a very vain man and very prone to snake oil salesmen of the modern day variety.

Though I can't help thinking it just might be the patriotic duty of every Trump-supporting 'Merican to do exactly as he's suggested.

Youmakemewannashout · 25/04/2020 18:59

Have read that ‘At least 30 New Yorkers ingested household cleaning agents in the 18 hours since the president suggested using it to fight Coronavirus “ ...... apparently they know about them as they had to contact the Poisons Agency - at least they won’t die of Coronavirus 😱

HospitalToast · 25/04/2020 19:51

Hardly anyone watches anyone religious on TV in the U.K. it’s not a thing over here like it is in the States

Harvestsquirrel1 · 25/04/2020 19:52

I live in the United States. The president has trouble wording things, and has notoriously been taken out of context. His haters live for this stuff and try to twist his words to the point of knock it off, we get the point, you hate him. He was talking about a UV light, and a medication to “clean” the virus, using Lysol as a very poor analogy. He is in no way suggesting that we inject ourselves with disinfectant. And by the way, I am not a Trump supporter, but I will not partake in any bullying when it comes to anybody. The hard thing is that people are fighting among themselves here, rather than coming together. We have all reached a threshold. The president has said and done some embarrassing things. But he gets misunderstood often. He doesn’t act like a phony like some of our previous presidents. With him, what you see is what you get. And yes, as a US citizen, it is embarrassing. He’s like that drunken uncle at the holiday table who says things that upsets people, but he really doesn’t mean it. It’s just how he is.

HospitalToast · 25/04/2020 19:53

@MissConductUS my last post was a reply to your comment about the church leader visiting the U.K. I thought I was replying to you but apparently not :-)

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 25/04/2020 19:55

Hardly anyone watches anyone religious on TV in the U.K.

Songs of Praise has a bigger audience than Match of the Day.

Randomword6 · 25/04/2020 19:55

He tried to say it was a prank today

Randomword6 · 25/04/2020 19:58

Hi Harvestsquirrel1, I'm really interested to know if you will vote for Trump in Nov?

isabellerossignol · 25/04/2020 20:06

The president has trouble wording things, and has notoriously been taken out of context

It's not really acceptable for a president to have trouble wording things. What if he accidentally declares war on Russia or something? Saying it's just how he is won't really cut it then.

Randomword6 · 25/04/2020 20:10

Also Harvestsquirrel1 , I don't think it is appropriate to say you are defending Trump against bullying - don't you think that is only necessary when someone is powerless?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 25/04/2020 20:11

Not having that. He deliberately circumlocutes, obfuscates and self-contradicts everything he says. It is deliberate, in case he has to deny saying what he said when he goes too far, such as mocking a disabled reporter or admitting to perving at minors in beauty contest changing rooms.

KickAssAngel · 25/04/2020 20:27

I live in the US and I'm British. I get the impression that the UK is far more in danger than the US from the media, so be wary of what you hear. I live in Michigan where 'the woman' has far more influence than Trump. One of the issues in the US is that each state has a fair amount of autonomy - much like each country in the EU. So, we locked down quickly & strictly. Detroit has been badly hit - but there are a number of factors that made that happen. I live about 40 miles away and our local hospitals still have plenty of capacity. They're taking transfers from Detroit and have put off building field hospitals as we currently don't need them.

Trump can have some direct influence and control, but it is often massively watered down by the time it reaches most people. For example, his tweet about stopping immigration. Now, my green card is awaiting renewal so I was worried - but, on reading the legislation it makes almost no difference - I just have to wait for the immigration offices to re-open and it will process. Immigrants cannot get stimulus checks, though, so I've lost out on that. But (and this is what Trump cares about) Trump can now claim to be THE president who STOPPED IMMIGRATION and protected American jobs. That's a vote-winning sentence.

RE: his more absurd suggestions - well, he has shares in the co. that produce the anti-malarial drug, some lobbyists were in contact with him about the disinfectant (he's probably getting some money from them somehow) and the anti-lockdown "protests" are mainly in states with Democrat governors, and appear to have been organized by local Republicans.

What he says sounds incredible, but almost always there's a "win" in them for him somehow. He simply says the things that will get him money, votes, or both. Then his aides rush around making it somehow credible and he gets to claim that he's the genius who made things happen.

KickAssAngel · 25/04/2020 20:31

btw - early on someone said it's illegal in the UK to have your water cut off. It is in Detroit as well. There are plenty of threads on here about what unscrupulous landlords do, and there are unscrupulous water companies too. Of course it's outrageous how the more vulnerable people are being treated in this crisis - but the same can be said in every nation of the world.

ComeOnGordon · 25/04/2020 20:35

An American friend posted something on fb yesterday about how ridiculous it was that the president was even making these suggestions in public and a republican (evangelical Christian) that she knows commented “well Democrats are baby murderers so trump all the way for me” 🤦🏼‍♀️

jasjas1973 · 25/04/2020 20:37

@Harvestsquirrel1

For pity sake! he is an international businessman, chaired his own TV show and now the POTUS but he stumbles like a drunk giving a best mans speech??? really?

I listened to all of his speech and clearly is suggesting UV light therapy (not such a crazy idea) but then goes onto suggest disinfectant and injecting it as a means to cleanse the lungs and that its an interesting idea that should be looked into...... Trump clearly isn't all there.

MissConductUS · 25/04/2020 20:53

@HospitalToast He spoke at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which is why I thought people might have seen him speak. Reportedly the wedding was widely watched on telly in the UK.

elp30 · 25/04/2020 20:53

@KickAssAngel

My husband is English and a green card holder and he received a stimulus check last week.

Did you not get the stimulus check because you're a dependent on someone else's taxes? I'm just wondering why you didn't get one.

dreamingbohemian · 25/04/2020 20:57

Harvestsquirrel

Like fuck you're not a Trump supporter

There are literal concentration camps full of migrant children in the US. Some of them have died. Some have been sexually abused. Some have been put up for adoption in the US and their families will never see them again.

No one would defend the man who did that from "bullying" unless they actually thought he was all right.

dreamingbohemian · 25/04/2020 21:01

MissConduct the penny just dropped for me about who Michael Curry is Blush. I loved his sermon at the wedding! You're very lucky to have him as leader.

Wrenna · 25/04/2020 21:05

I am not a Trump supporter. Honestly we will be fine, even if that bonehead gets in again...I’d like to say he won’t but I never thought he’d get in the first time! We have had a fair share of lousy presidents. We’re still here, we’re not going anywhere.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 25/04/2020 21:18

@elp30 @KickAssAngel

My understanding is that stimulus checks have been distributed according to income level, so those who needed it most received the payment first. The higher the income, the later it'll arrive and the smaller it'll be.

DH and I haven't received anything yet either.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 25/04/2020 21:22

No medical knowledge but like some PP's, I've been wondering whether Trump is suffering from dementia/alzheimer's. I know there's provision in the Constitution to enables Congress to remove a medically unfit president.

thewitcher · 25/04/2020 21:25

I am not a Trump supporter

If it walks like a duck...

but I will not partake in any bullying when it comes to anybody

Unlike your president.

flyingspaghettimonster · 25/04/2020 21:29

Stimulus checks will not go to American citizens or legal residents who have a social number, if they filed jointly with a resident who only has a tax id number. So my husband and american son do not get their share because Republicans are so afraid of helping a family with a foreign partner. Nevermind that these families often have American citizens as kids or spouse... it has been the subject of a law suit which I hope the guy wins as I felt like utter shit when i realised my family are worse off financially purely because I exist

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 25/04/2020 21:35

@flyingspaghettimonster That's bizarre, is it related to your type of visa?

Genuine question, I'm an immigrant too and was given a SS #. I didn't realize not everyone received them. Sad
