To genuinely wonder what is going to happen to the US?

Weirdly the story has now disappeared from the BBC since I saw it this morning, but basically. Donald Trump is suggesting UV treatment and injecting disinfectant as a means to kill COVID.

Obviously most know he’s a lunatic, but enough support him to keep him in power, and people will take this advice seriously and will surely inevitably die as a result.

Thing is, there seems no way to stop him. if he gets back into power, which he undoubtedly will, then they have another four years of this, in which case the stability of the country is in serious danger.

But if he doesn’t get in I predict serious unrest and even wonder whether the states could end up in civil war.

Either way it’s not a place I would want to be going right now.

It’s obviously easy to laugh at trump from the sidelines, but people are having to live under this....

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 18:34

Apparently it was sarcasm

He then talks about disinfectant on the hands.

Which is not good either.

Soap and water. That's what we need on the hands

MissConductUS · 24/04/2020 18:50

NRTFT.

If Trump gets reelected it will be because the Democrats selected the wrong opponent again, not because of any great love for him. He is, manifestly, an idiot.

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/04/2020 19:04

There’s a great many Christian people in the us who absolutely believe God has placed trump as the president.- therefore he must be ‘right’
The feeling was ( in 2015-16) that Hilary is a devil / into witchcraft /black magic etc
These are largely the same people who believe Obama was (is) the antichrist
And so they won’t vote Democrat

The religious aspect is massive over there as I understand it

So dangerous

MissConductUS · 24/04/2020 19:12

The feeling was ( in 2015-16) that Hilary is a devil / into witchcraft /black magic etc

Yank here. This is absolutely the first I've heard of this. Do you have any evidence or news reports to support it? Also, how many is "a great many" Christian people? The majority of Christians in the US are either Roman Catholic or in a mainstream Protestant denomination.

I would say that the role of religion in politics is important, not massive, and it's mostly seen in specific issues like abortion or same sex marriage.

I think your view of the US is a bit off.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 24/04/2020 19:18

I am more surprised that his 'advisors' and chief medical officers etc stand around and listen whilst he spouts his rubbish. Are they all scared of him?

Does he have dementia? Or some other ailment...?

Weallhavevalidopinions · 24/04/2020 19:27

'Asking sarcastically' ummmm oh dear.... realises he has been ridiculed and now coming up with a stupid excuse for why he said it... Oh dear he really does make it up as he goes along doesn't he!

MissConductUS · 24/04/2020 19:29

His advisors don't know what he's going to say until he's said it and they're not going to get into an argument about it on national TV.

Does he have dementia? Or some other ailment...?

I did quite a few years in geriatrics. It doesn't present like dementia. He's just a massive idiot who loves hearing himself talk.

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/04/2020 20:09

"He's just a massive idiot who loves hearing himself talk."
And he loves others to hear him talk. I think he absolutely cannot stand not being the centre of attention. And since coronavirus takes the attention away from him and onto the pandemic, he does whatever he needs to do to get the attention back onto himself. And if that's saying something so outrageous that everyone just stops to gawp at how fucking insane he is, that's fine by him - just as long as he has your fullest attention.

HighNetGirth · 24/04/2020 20:09

Interesting. There was a Twitter thread last week with a lot of people saying he has all the classic signs of frontal lobe dementia. Scared me silly!

BiBabbles · 24/04/2020 20:09

I wonder as well, not as much about Trump/Biden, but just in general with how fractious everything has been for years and now just even more so. I was reading recently about how the West Coast states have come together as have some of the North East ones to work together in response to poor care from the federal government.

It's not the first time there have been rumbles of 'will this break the union?', those have been around forever, but its been the first time I've felt it has potential to get...interesting seems the wrong word, but I guess a challenge that could, possibly, make some big changes where the states have more impact. Trump's treatments of governors has certainly added to that.

NowSissyThatWalk · 24/04/2020 20:14

I miss Obama Sad

Defenbaker · 24/04/2020 20:29

He appears to be losing his mind. I thought the report about his suggestion to inject disinfectant must have been exaggerated, but now I've seen it I'm shocked that he could be that stupid. There was no sarcasm involved, from what I could see, just a suggestion that he spewed out before he engaged his brain.

For years I've tried to see some saving graces in Trump, tried to tell myself that he's not as bad as he's painted, but now I think his critics were right all along. It's terrifying that someone so monumentally stupid is POTUS.

isadoradancing123 · 24/04/2020 20:30

Well he has no competion in Joe Bidon

dreamingbohemian · 24/04/2020 20:34

Religion is extremely important in some parts of the US and not at all important in other parts. It's one of the reasons it might not stay together in the long term. People from the less religious areas are very resentful about their lives being dictated and regulated by very conservative Christians.

Evangelicals are the biggest Christian group but they mostly live in parts of the country that the national media ignore, and so it's hard to understand their positions really. They are the most pro-Trump group out there (along with white men generally). It boggles the mind.

They do use very colourful language. I think Hillary was the daughter of Satan? It's a way of conveying how totally evil they thought she was.

"I miss Obama Sad"

Hell,'s teeth, looking at Trump makes me miss Dubya!

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 20:45

I love how Fox is trying to defend it

www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-claims-he-was-being-sarcastic-about-disinfectant-comments

I can see people washing their hands in disinfectant such as bleach

www.healthline.com/health/bleach-on-skin#first-aid

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 20:46

From Fox

After Trump's initial comments, in which he did suggest there might be a way to "do something like that by injection inside or, or almost a cleaning" after changing the topic from light to disinfectants though he made clear it was not a definitive recommendation and said "medical doctors" should be involved in any tests, a reporter asked Bryan to clarify what the president said

".......looking at Trump makes me miss Dubya."

Believe it or not Dubya set up a government agency to deal with pandemics. There is a piece doing the rounds of him stressing the importance of such a agency.

I think Trump dismantled it. Sad

Could somebody link to it please.
I am useless at links.

MissConductUS · 24/04/2020 20:57

@dreamingbohemian - there's so much wrong in your post it's hard to know where to start.

Religion is extremely important in some parts of the US and not at all important in other parts. It's one of the reasons it might not stay together in the long term.

Wrong. The distribution of regular church goers ranges from a low of 22% to a high of 55%, with most in the 30's. And are you really suggesting that a religious war could happen in a country founded on freedom of religion?

I think Hillary was the daughter of Satan?

Can you provide any evidence for this?

Evangelicals are the biggest Christian group

Nope. Roman Catholics are, and it's not even close.

Why do so many people in the UK feel that they can speak authoritatively about the US when their understanding is either very superficial or completely wrong?

MissConductUS · 24/04/2020 21:07

Here's the link on church attendance. Scroll down to Attendance by US State:

dreamingbohemian · 24/04/2020 21:26

MissConduct. I AM American. I lived in NY or DC for 35 years. I know what I'm talking about.

The Pew religious surveys (considered among the most authoritative) show that the largest Christian denomination is evangelicals, at 25%. Catholics are 20%.
www.pewforum.org/religious-landscape-study/

Pew has also looked at variations in religious feeling. In Alabama 77% of people are highly religious versus 33% in Massachusetts. That's a pretty big swing. www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/02/29/how-religious-is-your-state/?state=alabama

You can certainly see public policy differences, with more religious states trying to effectively ban abortion (by putting onerous restrictions in place), teach creationism in school, and not recognise same-sex marriages.

I'm not saying there will be a religious war, but I think the country is increasingly polarised and religion is an important part of that. If Trump is reelected and gets to flip the supreme court, allowing conservative Christian policies to be imposed nationwide, of course this will contribute to regional divides and perhaps ultimately the end of the Union.

Finally, I worked on right-wing extremism in the 90s, you saw even then references to the Clintons as Satanists. There was the Pizzagate conspiracy theory in 2016, that Hillary was linked to a satanic pedophile group. Google Hillary Clinton and Satan and all sorts of loons come up.

I agree that people unfairly paint all Americans as religious nutcases but let's not pretend that there isn't a very large number of extremely religious and conservative people there, who want to impose their theology on the rest of the nation.
