This isn’t a “am a allowed” but more - what you do? Dh and I bought a sports type car with a soft top in February
So my question it’s a convertible and while I know in theory I wouldn’t. Be breaking rules to habe the too down - fear that if I do - I will end up on a local Facebook page or similar
So aibu to put the top down

OP posts:

Put it down and enjoy the less polluted air while you can! Fuck the haters.

Asdf12345 · 23/04/2020 22:21

When driving a convertible you should keep the top down all the time unless it’s really tiddling down. Otherwise what is the point of dealing with the expense, leaks, drafts, etc?

cardibach · 23/04/2020 22:21

I have no idea what you are worried about. What difference does it make to anyone, or the virus, whether your top is up or down. All that matters is a)is it an essential journey? And b)are you obeying the rules of the road?

cardibach · 23/04/2020 22:22

What haters dolly? I can’t imagine anyone commenting at all!

Outtedagain · 23/04/2020 22:24

I’ve been enjoying this for weeks it’s surprising how much essential milk and bread we need these days.

Coolcatsandkittens · 23/04/2020 22:25

I drove past someone this evening in a convertible with the roof down - the only thing I thought was what a lovely evening to drive with the roof down

Rebootingagain · 23/04/2020 22:26

They have lifted some restrictions here from tomorrow. One is that if people from separate households “need” to travel to work together (mainly tradesmen in vans) they should have the windows down.

So yeah, put the roof down

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 23/04/2020 22:32

Drop the top and enjoy! We've been out in ours today. Its one of the few fun things we are still allowed to do (essential journeys only of course).

drcb83 · 23/04/2020 22:32

I drive my convertible - and OP is right - you do get looks like 'how dare you have fun', 'you should be driving a beige volvo looking sad'

Winegumaddict · 23/04/2020 22:33

I'm borrowing a convertible at the moment I have the top down if it's not raining. I absolutely do not care. I only go out to do the food shop or to go to work so they're essential journeys. I live having the top down go for it.

cardibach · 24/04/2020 22:32

Driving with the top down - absolutely fine.
Doing excess trips because you like it like @Outtedagain - not fine.

Boom45 · 24/04/2020 22:34

So long as you're not speeding and face timing like the twat I saw driving near me last week I think you're fine.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 24/04/2020 22:45

I had to drive mine to the garage for its MOT the other day...sun was beating down...Queen was blaring out of the CDplayer .....wind in my hair...gorgeous.

I took the long way round I can tell you!

The drive back via Aldi was MUCH MUCH less fun in dh's Doblo. 8)

TigerDroveAgain · 24/04/2020 22:48

Ours is sitting miserably in the garage: would love to drive it but as it’s 54 years old the chances of a random breakdown are quite high so it’s staying inSad

Peakypolly · 24/04/2020 22:49

My DD is NHS and says the thought of her getting in her convertible, roof down at the end of the day to drive home from work is one of the things that keeps her going.

AgeLikeWine · 24/04/2020 22:50

One of our cars is a convertible and we always have the lid down when the weather is decent, as it has been this month.

PhoneLock · 24/04/2020 22:50

I had to drive mine to the garage for its MOT the other day.

Had to drive?

www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-due-from-30-march-2020

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 24/04/2020 23:00

yup...dh's had an emergency oil leak that had to be fixed, and mine was due its MOT...garage is down to two days a week, we don't need my car atm and I don't fancy joining the queue in six months time (or whenever the MOT people decide ) to wait weeks for parts/mechanic time

or a tussle with insurers should there be an accident and they decide that maybe the car was not actually road worthy due to me not actually being a mechanic.

so instead of there being TWO of us out to collect dh's car, there was just me...so basically at least 50% less risk really.

but you didn't think of that now did you? Hmm

PhoneLock · 24/04/2020 23:10

but you didn't think of that now did you?

So, essentially, you took the car for an MoT that wasn't due for six months because it was more convenient for you.

Chickychoccyegg · 24/04/2020 23:16

omg @phonelock who cares? Hmm why not take it now while its quiet and convenient?

Icanflyhigh · 24/04/2020 23:18

Roof down at all times unless its absolutely wazzing it down. It's the law!
Sod the haters and the facebook police. Fuck'em!

Itsjustmee · 24/04/2020 23:19

One of our cars is a convertible . I love it
We have the roof down every day in this weather
What’s the point in having one and having the roof up ???

SquirtleSquad · 24/04/2020 23:19

If go for it unless it's a convertible Range Rover because they're fucking ugly Wine

SquirtleSquad · 24/04/2020 23:19

I'd*

Icanflyhigh · 24/04/2020 23:21

@SquirtleSquad couldn't agree more! What is the point of them?!
