To ask the spookiest/creepiest/mysterious thing you've ever heard?

I know we've had these before but I just love all things creepy or mysterious!

I love reading them in the evening, perhaps I'm a freak but what is the scariest thing you've ever heard (or seen if you have any first hand experiences!)? Or even a horror short you've watched?

I usually read things about mysterious disappearances, anything to do with cults or witches gives me the creeps.

The Smiling Man on Creepy Pasta is one that always makes me uneasy!

I've told this on here before but it is still something that we can't explain!

When DH and I first moved in together we moved in to a church/monastery that had been demolished apart from the outside and then nice apartments had been built in like the shell of this old building.

We had seen a few apartments up for rent in this building and always missed out on getting one, so when one came up on Rightmove we jumped at the chance to move in and just called the agent and said we'd rent it without viewing first. I know that wasn't a very smart move but this building was beautiful and but he apartments were all similar and we'd seen 5 before now.

We move in and everything is great. It was a duplex apartment with the bedroom and a bathroom upstairs. The downstairs was an open plan area with a big island in the middle with the oven and hob built in to it. At the back of the kitchen was a small alcove/corridor. Maybe about ten steps from the end of the kitchen to the end of this little part. There were two stone steps leading down to it and the floor was stone with old brick walls. We assumed it was just a bit of character left in from the refurbishment of the old building and loved it.

When friends came over we used to use the alcove bit to hang up coats. There wasn't a light there during the day the light from the big windows lit it up but of a night it would get quite dark. After a few weeks I started to feel uneasy being home alone, especially if I was standing in the kitchen part. The end of the island was where the hob and oven was and the alcove started directly opposite the end of the island. So if I was cooking it was behind me to the left. I had my back to it. I mentioned this to a few friends and they said that they always felt scared going to get coats and bags but just thought that was because it was dark. Another thing too, in front of hob was a sort of half wall that went from the island counter top all the way up to the ceiling so say if you were stood in certain parts of living room area you couldn't see the oven or see the alcove part.

One day, DH was sat on the couch and I was cooking. I could see him from where I was standing. I was looking at the pan and then suddenly felt someone grab my left shoulder. I thought it was DH so I turned but no one was there. I turned again and DH was still sat down. There was no way he could have done it. I told him what had happened and he said that had happened to him a few times while he had been stood there.

Our 6 month contract ended and we decided to move as I had a new job. The agents were showing someone around and we were on our way out when we bumped in to them in the corridor. They were showing a friend of a friend around so we had a little chat and they later rented it out.

We bumped in to them a few months later and asked how they were enjoying it there and they said they loved it but asked if we found the kitchen drafty. I said no but always thought the alcove bit was a bit chilly. They looked a bit puzzled and asked me when I meant. I explained where I meant and they said "There's just a wall there. There's always just been a wall there." I asked if it had been put up perhaps after we moved and they said that it wasn't there when they looked around and that they would absolutely remember seeing that.

We went home and looked back through photos and in the six months we'd lived there all the photos we'd taken hadn't included that part. There were photos where the wall by the oven had covered where it had been. Nobody else seemed to have captured this mysterious corner of the apartment apart from one who had taken a photo from the front of the island but half of the photo where it would have been was just black.

I went on this persons Facebook to see photos and there was one of them sat on the island with their keys with the entire back wall of the kitchen behind them- no alcove at all. They moved in the day after we left so there wouldn't have been time to put up a new wall.

DH and I were so confused but then we thought about it more and realised that the entire inside of the building had been removed so why would there be an old brick and stone part?

We looked back at the pictures the estate agent had put on and there weren't any that included that area so couldn't tell if it was there or not.

I honestly don't know what it was or if we all imagined it. There is just no explanation for it at all but I'm just glad that my friends and DH had at least seen it too!

My sister bought a flat (in the 70s) and it was nice enough but very soon after she found that the bedroom was ‘off’. Sheets would be pulled off her at night, feeling of fear and anxiety, things moving, noises when there was no one in there, cat freaking out at nothing, voices from empty bedroom...

chatting to a neighbour it turned out that the last owner had been murdered in the bedroom and the body was there a while before her body was found (young woman, partner killed her). This was a far way away from where we lived then so she didn’t know anyone there or had heard anything in the news.

lettheshadows · 25/04/2020 14:51

@CharDee Oooooh I remember your story!! Freaky.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 25/04/2020 16:04

@PulyaSochsup I’ve had very similar – mid teens, woke up in the middle of the night to a voice saying “your daughter is going to die”. I don’t have a daughter, but we’re TTC and that memory keeps coming back to me. Saying that, I’ve always had lucid dreams and vivid nightmares, so the rational part of me thinks it must be that. Quite horrible though.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 25/04/2020 16:14

About a year after my best friend's gran died, I was at their house for New Year. I had this sudden vision of her Gran in a very distinctive skirt suit, pushing her walker along.

I mentioned it to my friend, and said what colour this suit was as it was quite different from what her gran usually wore. Friend when even whiter than me and said "that's the suit she bought to wear to my wedding, but she never wore it because she died before the wedding. It's still hanging up in the wardrobe, how could you have seen it?".

She showed the suit to me, and it was exactly what I'd seen.

We were in our early 20s and friend is quite religious and I am a scientist. Neither of believe in ghosts. That was odd.

My favourite of all threads, just read it all in one sitting. Keep them coming x

I had my bum pinched by a ghost in a famously haunted smugglers’ den cum pub but nobody believes me. I was heavily pregnant at the time and I woke up to hear a voice say, ‘raise your hand if you’ve ever been pinched on the bum’ and felt my bum get pinched. I froze and couldn’t even move to wake my husband up - he woke up sharpish when he heard me howling though!

lilyboleyn · 25/04/2020 20:03

Bum was hanging off the edge of the bed and not pointing anywhere near husband at the time, I must add!

lettheshadows · 25/04/2020 20:26

@lilyboleyn Mermaid Inn, Rye by any chance...?!

Elphame · 25/04/2020 20:52

Many strange things have happened in my house - this is a recent one.

I bought a new glass light shade for the landing ( which is a hot spot for other events but that's another story.) It was one of those that you screw into the lamp holder and then the bulb goes on last. It can't come off unless the top of the holder is unscrewed and even if it did the ring is too small to fit over the bulb.

Mid day so no lights on and I was the only one at home.

I'd fitted it and had barely got down the stairs when the lamp shade was flung at me. It shattered in pieces on the hall floor missing me by inches.

I went back up to investigate assuming that the whole light fitting had broken only to find the lamp holder still screwed tight and the bulb in place. No way could that lampshade have just fallen off.

Love these threads but sadly don’t have anything to add myself. I remember reading a freaky story on one of these threads years ago about a man in a club stood by the bar? Can anyone else remember it? I will try to find it now because it was really spooky...

Esiotrot87 · 25/04/2020 21:03

Found it! :

In the late 1970s/early 1980's the place to go was TOTS (Talk of The south), which was a Disco in Southend on sea.

We used to go every week.

I started to notice a young man with blond hair. He was always alone and always stood not far from the bar. I would catch his eye and he would stare back but it felt very uncomfortable. He didn't smile back which was very odd as back then I was a gorgeous young thing! ;)

He was there every week and although I was having a riot of a time with my girl friends, I did start to look out for him. No one else appeared to notice him as we were all having such a great time.

He was always dresses the same in shirt and trousers. He wasn't fashionable but he wasn't unfashionable. He was good looking and had a very clear complexion and wavy blond hair.

I chat to anyone but I always had the feeling of being fearful of him and not to approach.

I suppose I just got used to seeing him there.

Fast forward nearly twenty years later and my disco days were long over and my then partner who was in the music business told me that he had to meet someone at the former TOTS. I think there was a name change and instead of a disco it was now a nightclub.

I decided to go with him to see how much it had changed inside.

We got there and off he went to meet this chap, it was only a quick chat.

I strolled around, feeling rather out of place amongst the pretty young things and then wham! Straight in front of me about ten feet away was the boy/man I used to see all of those years ago!

Everything around me seemed to fade away and I could not tear my eyes away from him. He was angry, very angry I could feel his anger and I felt terrified. I was fixed to the spot and I cannot find the words to describe just how petrified I was.

I felt as if I was in grave danger. This young man, perfectly ordinary looking was exactly the same as I'd seen him before. He hasn't aged and his hair and clothes were the same.

All of a sudden, the world started rushing back into view and I could see and hear everything going on around me, I spun around and knew I had to get out of there as soon as I could. Thankfully my now ex had finished with the bloke he had to meet and I tugged on his arm to get us out of there.

I have no idea what or why I saw this young man and why he should be so menacing.

Another poster did suggest that a teenager had been run over and killed nearby but it doesn't explain why this presence would want to scare the crap out of me!

He was so scary because he was so normal looking and whatever it was about him had the power to give off the very strong vibe of anger and danger.

Not me but my sister-

We used to share a room when we were younger (she was aged between 2-5 when this happened and tells me this is her earliest memory).

She would wake up every night with her foot being stroked. She would look at her feet and would see an old lady in a flowery dress sat at the end of her bed. She would stroke her foot and say 'it's ok, I'm here to take care of you'

Neither of our grandmothers had died at this point and my sister didn't recognise her. She said even at that age she knew something was different about her because she had a glow around her 😱

She would run into my parents room at that point (leaving me alone in the room, I might add!) I never saw or felt anything but she would always say to my mum the old lady wakes me up and scares me.

We moved when she was 5 and my mum said the day we moved she stayed in her own bed and never mentioned her again but years later when my mum asked about the old lady, my sister vividly remembered.

I'm not overly woo but I think my sister is sensitive to these things as she has seen other things throughout her life too but this occurrence being the most vivid/scary.

Slat3 · 25/04/2020 22:14

When I was around 8/9 I had a cabin bed and I remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing a bright green light shining into my window. I was terrified and thought it was aliens. Still not sure what it was? Really bizarre (unless I was dreaming)

In the same bed/room I woke up in the morning with sick on the floor. I don’t know if I was sick in the middle of the night or whether somebody came in and was sick in my room (no idea why this would happen but I can’t explain it) and I don’t remember being sick and I would have had to have leant over the cabin bed which was quite high up.

Just two little strange things that happened in that bedroom, we didn’t live there for too long.

Applejaxx · 25/04/2020 22:19

WTAF that is seriously creepy and Im not easily spooked!

delilabell · 25/04/2020 23:21

I was scared when I was very young of a man/giant living in our loft (loft door was in my bedroom)
I wouldn't play in the dining room as I was scared he would sneak down and get me.
I remember my mom getting cross that shed got all my toys out in there and I refused to play.

SpookyOhs · 26/04/2020 00:21

This happened a couple of years ago but I still remember it clearly to this day. It still freaks me out even now.

I was 18, living with my parents in a three-storey house, and doing coursework late into the night. The house was built early 1900s though there was literally no information about the house anywhere so can’t really say what the history of it is/was.

My bedroom used to be next to my parents bedroom, and the landing was an open space with a bathroom to the left as you walk up the stairs. So I’m doing coursework way into the night and decide to go to sleep about 1am. I get ready for bed, careful of the creaky old floorboards, and settle down to sleep. About 30 mins later, I wake up almost like I’ve been shaken awake. My parents had a floorboard that was a bit loose so whenever you walked on it, it would make a loud sound. I was used to hearing my mum walk along it when she went to the bathroom at night.

I’m trying to get back to sleep when I hear my mum—or what I thought was my mum—get out of bed, walk across that floorboard, come out of the bedroom where the door didn’t close. The sound of someone walking around the landing could be heard and I listened as the creaky floorboards made the familiar creaking as if someone was just walking around in circles. It moved towards the bathroom, then towards the stairs, then to the bottom of the other stairs, then it came to a stop outside my room. I thought my mum was sleepwalking but she had never done that before. The bathroom door was open and the neighbours had a garden light that pretty much engulfed the whole bathroom in light, and the bathroom door was left open so I could see the light underneath my door. Where there was a shadow of a person standing there.

So I’m waiting, thinking my mum was struggling to sleep or had heard me moving around before, but there was no knock or tapping on the door like she usually did. I get out of bed, walk over, open the door to find nothing there. Then I heard the creaking on the floorboards again and I shut and lock my door and almost dive into bed. I can’t remember sleeping that night.

AllianceOfCorcles · 26/04/2020 08:37

Reading these at 3am this morning spooked me bad

Lordfrontpaw · 26/04/2020 09:22

When I was small we moved to a large house which needed work done to it so I was in my parents room until I was about 3. Since I could talk I used to ask who was the man in my bedroom is who would come over to my bed and lean over and peer at me - he had a square head and no face and that bothered me. I would ask this (in case you were thinking) on nights when my dad was working away (he used to have to work at the other end of the country back then and would have to go away a bit).

This room became my 2 sisters room and they used to complain of a raspy breathing sound coming from one corner. It used to freak them out but mum said it was ‘birds’. It came to ahead when one sister (a teen by then) was home by herself and sick in bed. The noise started - then to door which was at the door of her bed opened and a man walked in - all in black - he walked over to the corner of the room (where my bed used to be) and leaned over (as if peering at someone in a bed (no bed there by then). She ducked under the duvet and refused to come out until we got home.

Same thing happened to another sister (who took that room). It happened a few times, we later discovered - same thing like a film being played over.

Now mum swore each of the kids to secrecy about these things - so we were having the same experiences but never told each other - until we were all on holiday as adults and got a bit tipsy and started talking about it. One sister also used to see a small girl who would stand by her bed at night and ask her to come and play. We then found out that our grandma would never babysit us overnight because the house terrified her as she had seen several nuns (most of us saw them), and there were weird shadows that would pass windows and doors when noone was there.

What else... I was woken one night when I was in the house alone by loud, slow jazz music coming from downstairs. There was only a record player in that room and definitely no jazz music in the house. Lots of noises, shadows, dog refusing to go in certain rooms/howling at nothing etc.

Oddly enough, we weren’t scared (overly) or creeped out by it all - just irritated ‘oh shut up!’ Or ‘bugger off’. Mum always said ‘if there was something in the house that was bad it would have got us all years ago’.

The house was sold up long ago and I dream of it often (it was beautiful and huge, and I do miss it). I do hope the ghosties stayed to look after the new people...

One of the best woo posts I've read on here (along with the previously mentioned Savernake Forest story) was the one by the MNer who was a nurse working a night shift in a hospital.

She went with a colleague to get some food from a vending machine which was located in the basement, accessed by a lift.

They took the lift down together as normal, but upon the lift doors opening to the basement, they were confronted with a full on, horrific scene from a WW2 burns unit. The poster described the way one of the doctors treating a critically injured patient turned around with bright red eyes and glared at her and her colleague, who were by this point frantically stabbing at the lift buttons to get the door to close. I can't recall any other details, but I remember reading at the time and being Shock

If this is your story, pleeeeeease come back and tell it again!

Honsandrebels · 26/04/2020 10:03

The savernake forest story gets me every time Shock
@Lordfrontpaw I lived in a haunted house 20 odd years ago and still dream of it often. It wasn’t haunted in a nice way and I don’t know how we did t run screaming into the night! When I pass it now I often wonder about the current occupants and if they notice it too...
