to be irrationally annoyed with the furloughed?

I know I am but I'm jealous that they have all day to lie in the sun, home educate their dc, bake, sew, watch TV whilst I'm busier than ever trying to do it all whilst working from home.
I heard on the radio it's going to cost £50 billion over 3 months and I feel annoyed that the economy is totally f**d because we're paying everyone's salaries, and they're at home doing nothing.
I also know none of this is anyone's fault and IABU.

Why would you be paying higher rate tax on it, is it because your yearly salary still exceeds the lower rate? Surely if that's all you're paid that month that's below the threshold? Not sure how these things work.

No it’s calculated on normal annual salary, not monthly (and HMRC also seem to have gone a bit hyper-reactive with constant inexplicable tax code tweaks since they brought in the RTI system.)

calpolatdawn · 27/04/2020 14:05

i dont envy people people in my parents age bracket who fear its the beginning of the end, and may eventually be made redundant.

calpolatdawn · 27/04/2020 14:08

Also to point out the OBVIOUS, thats what SAHM do, SAHM do not sit around all day doing nothing, they are funnily enoughWink even more busy now.

Whataloadofshite · 27/04/2020 14:21

Wow. You are an awful human being.

Xenia · 27/04/2020 14:25

Arrietty, if you are furloughed then that person is not working so does not need anyone to mind the children. If you are not furloughed and working full time from home (lots of couples have both working from home full time currently not on furlough) then they may well need childcare particularly for babies and toddlers.

Also contractors who have a personal service/limited company with some PAYE do qualify for the PAYE furlough scheme help if not working by the way. However you may be a sole trader like I am and earning over £50k normally so get nothing just like I don't or may be under £50k sole trader and get the self employed scheme money.

nanbread · 27/04/2020 22:47

We could probably normally afford a nanny if we needed/wanted one, but DH’s furlough pay is about 75% less than (or 25% of) normal. It’s only the people on £30kpa or less that have only lost 20% of their normal wage (assuming no employer top ups).

@ariettyjones

Yes I appreciate that - but in that circumstance it would make perfect sense to furlough nanny as well as your DH isn't working so nanny not needed

Imabadmummy · 28/04/2020 15:18

I totally get you. I would be slightly jealous too.
I am on furlough. I worked from home with the kids home for a few weeks first though. It was hard. This is much easier.

My friend is working from home - kids at home. Husband still working out the home too.
Shes doing the best she can but I know shes struggling.
But I can't help! I can't have the kids here/go over and help out etc.

On the otherside - she will still have a job at the end of this - I may not. I work in travel - there is a high chance I won't have a job at the end of this.

Yes, it's easier being here but the worry does make it stressful.

wink1970 · 28/04/2020 15:50

@Junecat mine too, from dynamic & artistic to watching TV all day. :-(

I'm trying to talk DH into looking for other jobs whilst not working; his boss has taken the absolute P over this - couldn't wait to furlough everyone then sent a text picture of his new bike over the weekend, it cost >£2k which he put through the company books.

Xenia · 28/04/2020 15:54

If a husband is furloughed he looks after the children - no issue. If both parents are working full time from home then they need the nanny or other child care.

Parker231 · 28/04/2020 17:44

Those in my team who are working from home, as is their partner, are juggling full time working hours with childcare/ home schooling. There is lots of playing in the garden and screen time for the DC’s and very little schooling. One of my colleagues has joked that her three year old is watching Frozen on repeat and now knows all the words and songs.

purpleme12 · 28/04/2020 17:55

My child has never watched so much cbeebies in her life! She definitely knows more words to certain programmes than ever before!

I haven't been furloughed, my position has been required to sort out the company's commercial and contract obligations. When my company's contract finishes I am the first to go as the new company has their own commercial and compliance manager. My colleagues have been furloughed on 100% pay and all seem to have enjoyed a nice heatwave, safe in the knowledge their jobs ARE safe. I have been working 12/13hr days to ensure financial models are in order after picking up 3 other people's work. I had 3 weeks holiday booked to decorate the house which I could not cancel and due to many of the furloughed doing the same I was unable to get all the stuff. I was working approximately 4 hrs a day of every day of my holiday, the response I got from above was at least you are working, take one for the team. I have 5 days holiday until Jan 2021, my boss was furloughed had spent 3 weeks in Thailand in Jan and has just had 3 months furlough and still has 30 holidays until the end of the year. I will be made redundant first because he has worked here for 20 years me just 3. This is a very personal situation and can understand other perspectives, but my job is less secure than my my bosses, I am capable and cheaper, so working through furlough has been rubbish for me. Oh and my company held a big thank you to all staff but as I am an office worker I was not able to go in to celebrate the free month of breakfasts and lunches. I was one of the lucky 5% of the company. #YANBU

According to recent reports, 2/3rds of furloughed workers continued to work anyway (fear of job loss etc.).

CornedBeef451 · 10/08/2020 11:06

It's a tough one because it depends on the furlough. A relative has been furloughed on full pay, full support of his manager and a secure job to back to. He's had a lovely time with no threat to their mortgage or job loss.

DH has been furloughed but was told that could end at any time and there is no job for him to go back to. He started a new job today with a 3 hour commute after 6 weeks of frantic job searching, networking, multiple interviews, losing sleep and stress.

He thought he would enjoy it more as he has worked consistently since aged 16 but actually has been stressed and low so definitely not fun for us.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/08/2020 11:11

I see no issues with redundancies being made atm and follow furlough.

I know people facing their 8th+ redundancy since 2000. In one case, there's a reasonable chance that having survived the redundancy cuts last year (he was redeployed) when they were offering a % + Statutory Redundancy Payment, he'd now only be eligible for Statutory Redundancy this year. (He's currently WFH, not furloughed, but has no reason to think that those jobs will be more protected than anyone else's.)

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 10/08/2020 11:17

As one of the furloughed and I have been since 23 March and still ongoing it is a nightmare.Everyday is just a never ending battle with miserable mental health declining week on week. Not knowing whats going to happen and been filled with uncertainty each day.Of missing any meaningful routine and being productive. It looks great on paper OP but trust me its not.Imagine waking up everyday to nothingness,to uncertainty to fear to despair....its not fun.

TheAquaticDuchess · 10/08/2020 11:17

Of course you’re being unreasonable. What possible justification could there be for the way you’re feeling?

Surely you have to have some modicum of empathy, and if you have any empathy at all you’d be actively glad that millions of people haven’t been left homeless and starving.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 10/08/2020 11:18

It kinda depends.

Some people have been furloughed and are being topped up to 100% because they have quite seasonal (but salaried) jobs and this time of year isn't that busy, so it's an unexpected win for the employer and employee. It's fair enough to feel jealous about people in that specific scenario.

There are always winners and losers.

There are some people who are facing a real prospect of redundancy, and I don't envy them.

However, there are also many people who weren't eligible for the furlough scheme or any other Government support, so as "unfair" as it might feel, it's brutally more unfair for others.

wigglerose · 10/08/2020 11:20

You've acknowledged you're being irrational, but come on OP.

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/08/2020 11:21

In light of recent info that almost 3/4 of furloughed workers were still working, yanbu.
This money should have been spent on industries where it is really impossible to work, arts, music, theater, self employed,...
And I was also annoyed as I had to do 3 ppl's work for my original salary.

OldEvilOwl · 10/08/2020 11:28

YABU! I was only furloughed for 6 weeks and it was a nightmare. Maybe for someone without kids it would be ok, but the homeschooling nearly drove me insane! Plus the worry that there is even a job to come back to at all

MillicentMartha · 10/08/2020 11:45

This is an April thread revived for some reason? Things have moved on after 4 months!

Still a bit raw for some including me. Didn't realise it was April when I wrote my comment. Due to my personal circumstances, I don't feel it is unreasonable to be annoyed with companies management of furloughed staff. I thought I may get some holidays back as a gesture of goodwill but that isn't going to happen. I used 3 weeks of holiday, I could have been furloughed for that time and still had another 15 days leave to take.
tmh88 · 10/08/2020 12:12

Yes I’m furloughed but I’m being made redundant there is absolutely not enough work for me to do at all! The business I work for now is currently running off of a little bit of work and it’s just the director and his wife doing it! Trust me I would rather have a job!
