To ask how to stop being so scared? I've seen something that's scared me so much

It's so silly Blush

Basically I've been watching an old programme from years back. It isn't even suppose to be 'scary' but I'm really frightened by it. Had to bring toddler DS with me so I could go for a wee and not be too scared...

How do you just STOP being scared? I kept watching it because it is so fascinating but I always regret.

What is it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Dfg15 · 23/04/2020 14:18

Thats a horrible feeling, i do sympathise. If i watch something scary i always try to watch something light hearted after, for me currently its Friends or Modern Family.

Nicknacky · 23/04/2020 14:18

I think you need to tell us what the programme is.

And why on earth does taking your child to the toilet with you help you with being scared?

GiveTheDogACarrot · 23/04/2020 14:18

What did you watch?!

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 23/04/2020 14:19

Rainbow Most people won't even know what I'm on about, it was a programme called Beyond Belief, Fact or Fiction....

Same sort of spooky feel as Tales of the Unexpected and Hammer House of Horrors, but worse.

I'm a later 90's baby so not even born when these originally aired! But have always watched

Wow.

TofutiKline · 23/04/2020 14:21

Just keep telling yourself it isn’t real.

TDogsInHats · 23/04/2020 14:21

*pepsi" I'm with you on taking the toddler with you, it just seems to help.
I agree with pp to watch something light hearted.
What channel was this scary thing on and was it a specific episode. I'm sure we're all going to take a look now!

I find the most useful way to do feel less scared is to give in to the things I need to do! If you need to turn all the lights on or sleep with a torch or whatever then do it. It will pass. I always find that when I try to force myself to be sensible it makes everything much worse.

Faez · 23/04/2020 14:25

I used to love that show until I realised they were all likely fiction
"Very Loosely Based on a True Story: The show's premise. When a story is revealed to be "true", we are seldom told anything more than something like "according to our research, yes, a similar event did happen," so frankly, any of the stories could be true given how liberal of a definition of "similar" they used."

Sounds weird, but have you tried watching it again but with the sound turned off?

Inconnu · 23/04/2020 14:31

Try reading a very light, easy book OP. Choose an old favourite or even a children's book. Reading something will distract you and make you think of something else until the fear goes away Smile

Are you trying to petrify me?! Shock

It’s been a really long time dive I’ve felt that way (also a really long time since I’ve watched a horror film). Do you have any alcohol?

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 23/04/2020 14:42

It isn't a horror film. I do had some WKD in the fridge if that's any good Grin

Sorry op, totally off the mark, but I needed to say a massive Thank you? I’m sorry you feel upset by this program, but I’ve just found it thanks to your recommendation.i do love a good creepy tale. I’d have never found this (it’s on YouTube, full episodes) without your help.

If you want to be less scared, start off watching them in the daytime. Everything seems much less scary when the sun is shining.

bridgetreilly · 23/04/2020 14:45

CBT techniques: have a plan for when you think about it - what will you immediately start thinking about instead, how many deep breaths will you take, what will you say to remind yourself that you are safe and don't need to be scared.

Pretty soon the techniques will kick in automatically, and soon after that you won't think about it at all.

totallyyesno · 23/04/2020 14:54

What was it about? Maybe we can debunk it for you.

Theflushedzebra · 23/04/2020 14:55

There have been a few things that scare me stupid, OP. Certain bits of horror films really get to me. I would definitely recommend a comedy to take your mind off it.

I watched the Others at the cinema when I was pregnant, and I was so scared by the bit when the children were outside in the dark, I could barely sleep for weeks. I was petrified going to the loo in the night, had to turn all the lights on. I was 30 years old ffs.

BoomBoomsCousin · 23/04/2020 15:01

I do hate that - where I know it’s ridiculous to be scared but I am anyway. To get over it I just make myself do what I’m scared of. I think taking your toddler with you to wee was a mistake. You should just do it anyway, on your own and scared.. And maybe you jump A few times when a shadow moves or there’s a sound or whatever. But eventually you relax as nothing bad actually happens (or, at least, nothing bad that you’re scraped of, I have whacked my hand/head/leg as I over reacted to a shadow one or twice!).

DNAshelicase · 23/04/2020 15:06

YABU for drinking WKD

thenightsky · 23/04/2020 15:09

On youtube you say? Thank you. I love a good scare! Not going to get any work done today then Grin

GiveItARestJosephine · 23/04/2020 15:14

Can you spend some thinking about how the writers were trying to make it creepy? They’re trying to manipulate your feelings. It’s gone past the happy to be scared feeling, so you can choose to be okay. You can choose to not be immersed in the feelings they were trying to invoke.

When you feel scared, remind yourself that nothing has changed, All you’ve done is watch a programme that was written and performed to induce emotions. You’re still safe, and you’re choosing to be okay.

Mrsfrumble · 23/04/2020 15:18

Confession to make the OP feel better; I watched Ghostwatch for the first time when I was in my 20s and it scared me so much that I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days afterwards. At work I needed to go and get some documents in a dingy storeroom with high shelves, and I was too freaked go alone so I pretended I couldn’t find them and made a colleague come with me Blush
I got over it eventually.

DD was very scared of Miss Trunchbull after watching the film of Matilda so I showed her pictures of the actress who played her, looking completely different and smiley and kind. Could you look up some of the actors or background info on the episode OP? (This didn’t work for bloody Ghostwatch as the person who played the ghost isn’t famous and the only pictures of him online are from the programme).

yerawizadari · 23/04/2020 15:20

It's called Beyond belief so it is clearly all unbelievable rubbish. They dress it up and dramatise it to such an extent that you end up thinking that maybe...????

But no. It is all absolute cobblers.
