To ask how to stop being so scared? I've seen something that's scared me so much

It's so silly Blush

Basically I've been watching an old programme from years back. It isn't even suppose to be 'scary' but I'm really frightened by it. Had to bring toddler DS with me so I could go for a wee and not be too scared...

How do you just STOP being scared? I kept watching it because it is so fascinating but I always regret.

Would being told it's a monumental load of utter tripe help?

Go & play in the sun with DS ☀️ 😊

LagunaBubbles · 23/04/2020 15:25

You haven't said what's actually scaring you now?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 23/04/2020 15:25

Watch this on repeat... For an hour.. 😝

Couscousy · 23/04/2020 15:25

I wholly sympathise. I have a phobia of anything/everything supernatural and I don't even believe in the supernatural. I've had the phobia since I was a kid, I can't even sleep without a light on if I'm alone.

Those programmes would trigger me to be absolutely petrified! Watch a comedy, get out for a walk in the sun, basically try and get 'out' of that panic-mode!

IndiaMay · 23/04/2020 15:27

I get what you mean, for me it will be that I'll read something (like an article about an abduction, rape or murder) and it will play and play on my mind and terrify me for weeks after. Tbh the only thing I find that helps is time (it fades after a while) and watching or reading something lighthearted. I think people who have big imaginations can find themselves completely living within the thing that has scared them and it feels all consuming

Iadoremylabrador · 23/04/2020 15:28

It sounds like the tv programme Strange but True?

The Litany Against Fear

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

op put some music on and dance

DysonFury · 23/04/2020 15:39

I always get scared for a bit when a woo thread comes up here (parent watch horror films). especially the Savernake Forest story. You did right bringing the toddler with you to the loo, at least you could have sacrificed them then run for your life.

MitziK · 23/04/2020 15:41

Going slightly off on a tangent, what on earth is this 'Ghostwatch terrified me' stuff? It was absolute bollocks at the time - it took about 30s for me to say 'This is one of those 'pretend to be real' things, isn't it?'.

Is this a version of the Mandela Effect where people 'remember' being scared because everybody else says they were?

JacobReesMogadishu · 23/04/2020 15:42

I want to watch these now, what channel did you find them on?

Suzysleep · 23/04/2020 15:43

There's an episode of this that really scares me too! Is it involving a mirror? I'd just watch as many funny YouTube videos as possible to get it out of your mind. Solidarity, I know exactly how you feel!

girlwithadragontattoo · 23/04/2020 15:49

Hi op, years ago when i was a child there was a program called 'strange but true', I youtube'd it recently and just listening to the music brought back all the childhood angst i had Grin

ANoiseAnnoys · 23/04/2020 15:54

I felt like this after seeing a clip (only a clip, not even the full movie) of “It” - I really don’t even know why I watched it. I kept putting the light on in the night when I needed the toilet much to DH’s annoyance - I couldn’t tell him the truth about why I was scared so told him I was having night terrors and didn’t know I was doing it!!

SingingSands · 23/04/2020 15:54

I used to get freaked out by stuff like this. But now that I'm older and wiser (ahem!) I do this:

Think about what it took to make the programme. Broken down it's something like:

Script
Costume
Actors
Set design
Music and sound effects
Director
Cutting editor
Scrip reading whole cast, round table
Coffee
Lots of coffee
Wonder what the runner does? It's not as glamorous as people think.
Wow, someone still has to clean the bogs...

And I quickly dispel the fear because it's just a bunch of folk doing their jobs Grin

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 15:54

I’m really curious about this

I’d like to see it to distract from current terror.

Maybe if you keep watching it? Agree with lowering sound.

There was one scene in Haunting of Hill House with Bent Neck Lady which bothered me a lot. By the time I’d rewatched before sending the clip to people, I felt better.

Mrsfrumble · 23/04/2020 15:55

I wish I knew MitziK. I didn’t watch it at the time and don’t remember any of the hype (I was 12). Then many years later I saw it mentioned on a “scariest thing I’ve ever watched” list so I decided to check it out, knowing full well it wasn’t real, and yet it still got under my skin. The ending was really daft but all the little glimpses of the ghost scared me. It made me think “what if I saw something like that out of the corner of my eye?” (even though I don’t believe in ghosts)

Like I say, I got over it!

Cherrysoup · 23/04/2020 15:58

How is taking the toddler helping? Would you throw him as a sacrifice at the scary thing?! 👩‍👦

Umnoway · 23/04/2020 15:59

Ha my best friend used to love that programme when we were teens, it’s so lame. Sorry OP, you are being a teensy bit ridiculous! I remember a story on it about mannequins that came to life, it was hilariously cringe.

NekoShiro · 23/04/2020 16:02

If ive watched something that's scared me I put on a 'cleansing' show or film after, something that I've watched before that is super happy and funny, the complete opposite of whatever scared me and I tend to be okay afterwards

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 16:15

I think the toddler probably gives the OP a sense of normalcy.

AprilMay89 · 23/04/2020 16:29

I've seen that, and I remember being a bit scared by a few episodes. They weren't particularly scary, they just creeped me out somehow

I second watching light-hearted shows and focusing on something fun and easy to watch, always takes me mind of something that has scared me

Fedupandpoor · 23/04/2020 16:37

How is taking the toddler helping? Would you throw him as a sacrifice at the scary thing?! 😂😂😂 I probably would!

I can't handle any sort of demon/supernatural thriller and stopped watching them years ago. I'm fine with gore, as its right there in front of you. Once you see the monster, it's no longer scary.

If it scares you op, stop watching it! I loved horror but it wasn't worth the anxiety.

Bellabatwings · 23/04/2020 16:45

My DD and i used to watch that years ago, she does a great copy of his voice mumbling “fact or fiction” Grin
We found it funny as they were so not creepy at all!

Oldsu · 23/04/2020 16:47

Love that programme but then I am a trekkie and it has daddy Riker in it
