To ask how to stop being so scared? I've seen something that's scared me so much

It's so silly Blush

Basically I've been watching an old programme from years back. It isn't even suppose to be 'scary' but I'm really frightened by it. Had to bring toddler DS with me so I could go for a wee and not be too scared...

How do you just STOP being scared? I kept watching it because it is so fascinating but I always regret.

I don't like listening to the soundtrack of anything remotely scarey, so always have the sound low, subtitles on and my finger poised over the mute button just in case.

I used to flat share with a girl who could cope with the sound but couldn't watch. So she had her hands over her eyes saying "what's happening, what are they doing" while I had my fingers in my ears (pre remotes) saying" they're going into the house, OMG, the doors slammed behind them , there's something behind e curtain, what are they saying , what are they saying.."

Happy days.

I looooove Beyond belief! Such fond memories!

Yeah. Light-hearted stuff after if you get scared.

PuppyMonkey · 23/04/2020 16:53

I watched the movie Woman in Black about five years ago - a film which, according to many, is not that good and a frankly a bit cringe. Well I can tell you it was months before I could get up in the night to do a wee in case she was standing down the corridor. I also had to check in case she might be randomly standing in my garden.

I am 53 and not at all woo normally.

I’m over it now, which is a good job as I need a wee in the night quite often these days.Grin

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 16:57

Puppy the book is really good too. Different though....

I still love the trailer, I was totally looking in the wrong place for the window scene at the end 😂

andhessixfeetten · 23/04/2020 17:08

I'm still scared of the picture of the spider in my ladybird book of animals.

I actually struggled to type the word and i'm not even scared of spiders! Just that particular arachnid (can't say it)

Andante57 · 23/04/2020 17:08

We started watching The Returned (Les Revenants) but I got so scared we stopped watching after the first episode.
I really wish I hadn’t watched it as even thinking about it at night scares me. Dh is at home at the moment but once lockdown is over he’ll be away for work and I’m dreading going to bed on my own.
Op you have my sympathies.

Meggie2008 · 23/04/2020 17:14

I love that programme 😂 what was the episode that scared you about?

I'm obsessed with the programme Ghost Adventures, and never get scared by any of their things involving actual supposed ghosts, but their intro sequence freaks me out to no end, I have to fast forward through it or else I'm basically trapped in my own living room for the rest of the day 😂

Legoandloldolls · 23/04/2020 17:15

I'm like that with anything to do with bigfoot. I think maybe there is some truth in bigfoot, but the documentaries are sensationalist with zero proof.

They irrationally terrify me. I watch them late at night and reminds me of one documentary where someone in the USA saw one staring at them through the kitchen window in the dark.

Common sense says its probably not true, but they say they hide their dead so no bodies found and plenty of sightings and photos.

I shouldn't watch them really 😂

RabidChinchilla · 23/04/2020 17:18

I keep picturing the reaction if the BBC were to put Threads on the tv one night during this pandemic. Hands down the scariest thing I've ever seen.

Whatevaminga · 23/04/2020 17:20

Singing helps - sounds silly but when I'm feeling really scared I start singing and it calms me down a treat.

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 23/04/2020 17:25

How is taking the toddler helping? Would you throw him as a sacrifice at the scary thing?!

Well, he has a very good pokerface. To scare even the scariest of ghosts.

I don't know why things that are slightly 'woo' disturb me so much. But I can't stop coming back for more? I'm fascinated but terrified in equal measure. So not sure why.

I remember studying Inspector Calls for GCSE. I loved English literature but for some reason that play REALLY got to me. Our teacher at the time made us watch the play before reading it and I jumped out of my skin when they said it was a hoax... Nobody called inspector Goul exists... And then the phone rang and said an inspector will he coming and the okay ends, leaving the rest up to your imagination. Couldn't sleep for weeks.

Horror fills neither interest me or scare me. They do nothing. I don't like them but not afraid.

It is the 'paranormal' and spooky stuff (unrelated to the usual ghost etc) that get me. I read on here once about coincidences. Just Mumsnetters posting what coincidnce they'd experienced. Someone said a photo frame with their picture in was being sold 100 miles away from their hometown, where they moved to. I was really freaked

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 17:43

I don’t watch horror but love supernatural stuff.

MoonlightMistletoe · 23/04/2020 17:51

Whatever you do don't watch paranormal 911 that had me spooked Grin

I'm the same though, have to watch it but once the kids are asleep I begin to hear strange noises I wouldn't normally hear Blush

vampirethriller · 23/04/2020 17:55

I was terrified by the live version of Inside Number 9, and I'm a huge horror fan, zombies in particular, and Inside Number 9 is my favourite. But I can never ever watch that episode again.

Jenasaurus · 23/04/2020 18:07

When my DD was small she used to see a little girl on the landing looking in her room, my DS said he had also seen this little girl, I put it down to overactive imaginations and that one may have told the other...then a couple of nights ago, my now griwn up DD chose 1am to text me to say she had watched something about demons and apparently they often appear as a little girl! I slept the rest of the night with my light on, with one eye half open waiting for the little girl to appear so I relate to being terrified

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 20:06

I didn’t enjoy the live version of inside No 9. Normally I love it.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 23/04/2020 20:11

@vampirethriller I love IN9 too, and had to watch most of that episode peeping from the kitchen door. I was totally fooled too. Now it’s one of my favourites.

Chiyo666 · 23/04/2020 20:13

Watch it again with no sound but with a funny song playing, that always works. I recommend the Japanese yodelling chicken song.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 23/04/2020 20:15

Another Strange But True victim here as well. The Enfield Poltergeist one has stayed with me forever.
“My name is BILL!” 😱

LeaahLey · 23/04/2020 20:20

Oh I know what it is Op. I watched my haunted house! Scared the crap out of me. I was scared to get out of my own bed Blush

Keep your lights on

DieSchottin93 · 23/04/2020 20:28

I go on Instagram - I follow lots of foster kitten accounts so there's inevitably lots of tiny adorable kittens to take my mind off scary things Grin

DieSchottin93 · 23/04/2020 20:33

Also @Andante57 how scary is Les Revenants? I'm always on the lookout for new French stuff to watch and a friend recommended it to me but I'm not that good with scary stuff 🙈

cunningartificer · 23/04/2020 21:01

I remember browsing in a bookshop and reading part of Whitley Streiber’s book “Communion” as I was interested in extraterrestrials. So scared I had to leave the shop and had nightmares for ages. No idea what triggered such an extreme reaction.
