Nannies not being furloughed.

We live in an area where a high percentage of families who have nannies, and many of them are expecting their nannies to travel to and from work each day. Many nannies are saying the families are not front line / key workers and are WFH; the majority of nannies are from abroad.

AIBU to think that if you are expecting your nanny to travel to and from work, you need to take on the responsibility of paying them in full if they become ill, offer their families death in service pay, and cover the costs of their funeral expenses and repatriation in the event that they die?

These are pretty much the conditions that will be in the parents employment contracts anyway (given the main types of employment in the wealthiest part of London) so surely they should give the same terms to their nannies?

YES YANBU

NO Fuck off you stupid trollop everyone needs a nanny when working from home.

Everyone i know with a nanny is continuing to have them work if they are still working thrmselves. This does not seem contentious. I do know how parents wfh full time could successfully justify claiming furlough for their nanny.

Most people with kids trying to wfh are not "managing". Its a fucking nightmare, justifiable only on the grounds that it's keeping people alive. No one begrudges those people with nannies the help.

By the way, I also think that I have a moral duty not to use the furlough scheme if I can keep my employee safe at work, which I feel I can. I have not been out of the house other than exercise in a very uncrowned part of the country, washing hands as soon as indoors etc. The money that is saved by the country could pay for someone's treatment for another illness.

It is by no means clear that jobs that were not redundant would be eligible for the furlough scheme. Nanny employers who furlough their nanny when they are working from home are taking the risk that they will later be found not to be eligible.

Both are from Asia and have no families in the UK. The funeral / repatriation costs for their families are going to be massive.

I am very sorry to hear that and for their families. But that is why anyone travelling overseas, for work or for leisure, should have appropriate insurance. I would not expect anyone to be paying those costs out of pocket, now or at any other time.

IncrediblySadToo · 26/04/2020 13:44

They are applying to furlough. Whether they're eligible or not should be determined on application! As long as they're filled in the firms honestly there shouldn't be ANY comeback on furloughing staff.

I’m sure many employers would be understanding and grant leave now but that doesn’t deal with the question of how families pay their nannies if they have lost an income themselves.

Well then it makes sense to furlough them...

Some Nannies I know are furloughed

Some are working

Their employers need to work

They can’t with babies toddlers about

It’s a loophole as

Nannies can’t work from home

And although going to a house , it’s their work place so allowed
