I couldn't see another tread on this. But if there is, please link it.

What's your opinion on this? AIBU to think this is in very bad taste?

@AnnofPeeves Smile

@Doggybiccys as clarified, I am grumbling about the risk of the word "precious" becoming a prefix for PPE. Describing it as precious is part of the government's approach to absolve themselves of responsibility for the current PPE clusterfuck.

Of course we shouldn't be wasting PPE.

Tomoveornotomove2 · 23/04/2020 10:18

Imagine being mad at someone doing something fun while they are doing the hardest job in the uk right now.

I bet OP is a Tory

bloodyhellsbellsx · 23/04/2020 10:19

@Nicknacky for what reason do you not agree with staff eating gifted food?

user1498647726 · 23/04/2020 10:20

So what's the rules on black humor? I've heard stories from NHS keyworker dw that initially put my eyes on storks:but it's a way of coping, self protecting. If stupid dancing gets some more medical staff through this fine. Either way, so many of them are stuffing up their mental health as it is.

lotusbell · 23/04/2020 10:21

As someone has said, the nurses doing the videos are probable not working in intensive care or Covid wards but the general public aren't to know that and you can see why assumptions would be made. And are they wearing PPE at the end of their shift or at the beginning, in the videos?

Littlebluetruck · 23/04/2020 10:22

*If it cheers them up to do dances, then carry on.

Just don’t put it on social media. That’s the unprofessional part of it.

But then, I’ve never agreed with the hero worship that the media are promoting*

Agree with this.

AnnofPeeves · 23/04/2020 10:23

Not judging them for needing the release Lyin but for putting it on the public arena. We had several staff suicides when I worked in one particular trust, it was devastating. But that still doesn't make me think it's ok to put dancing videos online during a pandemic. Dance? Yes. Put it online? No

Nicknacky · 23/04/2020 10:23

bloody A few reasons. Many food companies are struggling financially and I would rather they looked after themselves first and foremost. NHS staff are being paid and don’t need free food.

I wish we wouldn’t encourage people to be on the roads attending at hospitals unless absolutely necessary and a curry delivery isn’t one of them.

I saw a photo of a free curry delivery at my local hospital. With the nurse standing shoulder to shoulder with the takeaway employee🤦🏻‍♀️

And I am a frontline worker with no PPE. Not NHS though.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 23/04/2020 10:23

My friend is a paramedic and she’s done a few til tok videos, they are a bit of fun.

She works 12 hour shifts with 30 minutes break. She’s human, she’s entitled to a fucking break, what she does it that break time is up to her.

A lot of paramedics, nurses etc have dark humour why? Because when you’ve been to a hanging, then on to a heart attack you need something to help you survive seeing that shit.

Yanbu

IsabelCupcake · 23/04/2020 10:24

I think a min of singing along to the chorus of a song or a little dance 2 or 3 nhs workers is fine. Its their break, keeps their and our spirits up, It's just fun.

Also fine for a longer compilation of various clips is fine.

But big bollywood style/riverdance dance numbers NOT fine. It must take organisation, practice, lots of people on break or given leave to go off and do it.

If they want ppe and other support this isn't the way to go about it - it might cheer them up but worries a lot of anxious people even more and paints a distorted. What about those who didn't take part - bet they had to work twice as hard. For everyone who danced there must be 4 others who were physically, emotionally and mentally in pieces - wanting to cry, sleep or just go home.

Truth is we expect entertainers, actors, comedians and ourselves to be silly to make money and raise awareness. We can because we aren't politicians, police, nhs etc. We are also time rich and don't have the responsibility.

We expect politicians, police, nhs and hmrc to be dignified, hard working and accurate. We expect them to be 'knowledgeable' or 'skilled' - not 'fun'

wickedgames · 23/04/2020 10:25

@Nicknacky what's your problem with the food that's being donated? It's one of the few things are are keeping staff morale high atm. It's also beneficial to the public as we're not having to bring our own lunch to work, which means less trips out to the supermarkets. I've not had to do a food shop for over 2 weeks!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 23/04/2020 10:26

We expect politicians, police, nhs and hmrc to be dignified, hard working and accurate. We expect them to be 'knowledgeable' or 'skilled' - not 'fun'

So you can’t be skilled and fun? What planet do you live on?

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 23/04/2020 10:27

Why aren't nurses or doctors allowed to put things on social media? I hate social media and wouldn't dream of putting anything up personally but I don't see why other people shouldn't be allowed to.

Queenoftheashes · 23/04/2020 10:27

I cringe at this type of thing but to suggest that they don’t have the right to practise a dance because operations have been cancelled is cuntish. Does the OP feel entitled to a complement of medical staff who work 24 hours a day?

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 23/04/2020 10:28

You can't police what people do in their personal life as long as it's legal.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 23/04/2020 10:28

I get what you mean OP.

I saw a video posted by one Trust of staff squawking out a bad rendition of an Frankie Valli song they'd reworded to make sound relevant to corona virus - there were about 30 of them outside the hospital standing amongst daffodils in their scrubs and uniform - I'll admit I did think "I hope they're not going back into work in those uniforms" - aside from breaking infection prevention rules, if you suffer from hay fever and they brought pollen into the ward it would be horrendous.

The same Trust had the maternity ward on video say a poem out loud - about 25 of them taking it in turn to say a line. I guess the hospital have a PR machine trying to keep up with TikTok trends etc, but the same maternity team a few days before announced that birthing partners could only be at births during last stages of labour and delivery and literally hundreds of concerned pregnant women were posting replies on their Facebook post asking questions and trying to get clarity on the rules. I do feel like, if a video could be made, it could have answered questions about the birthing partner rule, rather than 4 minutes of staff, about 80% of whom clearly did not want to be there, awkwardly mumbling a rubbish poem.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 23/04/2020 10:28

@Nicknacky I think it’s lovely that the public want to show support by gifting things but it is not as widespread as the media leads people to believe

Our trust has contacted local businesses and asked them not bring in donations in case of cross contamination. The army did come by and drop some Easter eggs off but I wasn’t on shift unfortunately

MadamShazam · 23/04/2020 10:28

@Doggybiccys I work for the NHS aswell.

Nicknacky · 23/04/2020 10:28

wicked I just don’t agree with piles of free pizza, curry’s etc. I don’t like that people are attending at hospitals and being in on the road to do so.

You could pay for the food that is brought to you. That’s still means you don’t have to go to the supermarket.

Let’s face it, food gifts for hospitals isn’t a new thing.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 23/04/2020 10:32

I'm torn on this. I can see why people suffering alongside terminally ill relatives would be upset. It's a truly devastating situation. However, I've been in that situation, more than once, and with some people who were far too young to die. In living through that devastation, I wonder if 5-minutes light-heartedness would have lifted an incredibly dark time. I did, after all, bring comedy films into my dying DM's room to cheer her up, and talk with her about how we used to laugh at them when we shared a season watching Doris Day films, for eg.

These people do a HARD job and like other professions some do it well, some not so much. I would certainly not begrudge them a few moments' fun. And I doubt for one second their motivation would have been: 'let's upset and offend some already-suffering people today!'

Give people a break. That's needed in these times more than ever.

hopeishere · 23/04/2020 10:33

This annoys me particularly where they are wearing PPE. Stop wasting it!!

The proportion of staff treating covid is small compared to the overall workforce. There's a lot of people with time on their hands.

So going on this thread there’s a significant proportion who have a problem with the social media aspect rather than the dancing itself.

I get it, I don’t ‘do’ social media or exhibitionism either but I accept that some people do and find comfort in it. It’s a different world these days and it’s normal for peoples lives to be played out publicly. They want to be seen and heard. Fine by me, it’s very easy for me just not to look rather than piss all over their chips.

I’m not convinced of PPE waste either - I would assume they’re using their own issued PPE that was currently in use. Tbh if they are ‘wasting’ it I would imagine they’re in for a dressing down from their own chief exec team never mind the public but public knee jerk reaction is going to ensure that anyway.

People have always looked for relief in stressful situations. We all know the WW1 Christmas Day story of the English and Germans singing silent night and having a game of football. Good job that didn’t happen in a time of social media - they’d have been demolished by people crying they were being disrespectful of those soldiers who’d died on the ground they were playing on.

WilburIsSomePig · 23/04/2020 10:33

Appointments aren’t being cancelled because there’s not enough staff, they’re being cancelled because we’ve been told all elective work is to be cancelled,

My treatment isn't elective but it's been cancelled. I'm not quite sure what's going to happen now.

However, I still don't resent NHS workers messing about and having a bit of fun in their truly shit days right now. Everyone is doing what gets them through. They're not robots.

RogueSymphonies · 23/04/2020 10:34

They've always danced... This is nothing new, many wards have already had their own dances / songs.
