I couldn't see another tread on this. But if there is, please link it.

What's your opinion on this? AIBU to think this is in very bad taste?

OP posts:
SylvanianFrenemies · 23/04/2020 10:05

No, of course. I'm just a bit prickly because of Matt Hancock trying to reframe it as "precious" and imply we in the NHS are wasteful. I'm all for highlighting that PPE shouldnt be wasted at times like these. Apologies if I came across a bit dickish!

MadamShazam · 23/04/2020 10:06

Unless you work for the NHS, you have no fucking idea how hard and stressful things are right now. So if they want to do a little dance to brighten up their day then so what? Miserable bastards, some of you Angry

Veganella · 23/04/2020 10:06

YANBU. Hospitals are only much good at the moment if you have Covid or are pregnant can’t wait to quit my job

Elsiebear90 · 23/04/2020 10:07

@Thighmageddon so unless you’re working flat out all day you’re not risking your own health to save strangers? I might not be rushed off my feet all day because all my elective work is cancelled, but I’m still seeing patients in emergency situations who are Covid positive, including performing CPR, which puts me at risk. My own partner tested Covid positive yesterday, she works at an orthopaedic hospital and again, all their elective work is cancelled, so she has some free periods, it didn’t stop her from contracting it though.

I think some people have a very narrow idea of the NHS, there’s more to running a hospital and saving lives than being a ITU nurse/doctor.

OldPeculier · 23/04/2020 10:08

Just waiting for the old chestnuts of ‘well it is their job’ and ‘they chose this when they became part of the NHS’ etc, for a full house.

MouthBreathingRage · 23/04/2020 10:09

@Inthepurplerain, of course there's always people dying. However, I don't need to say that these are different circumstances. Anyway, no need to jump down my throat, I dont care for any of these viral videos at the moment, regardless of their source. I merely said that I can see why some would find this particular scenario distasteful.

People on both sides need to calm down though, you can tell there's not enough light entertainment available on tv at the moment. Everyone needs to clap and cheer and love everything that isnt the virus otherwise they are 'MISERABLE BAAASSSSSTARDDDSS'. I'm actually starting to enjoy that phrase, I read it in a Rik Mayell voice.

Gruffawoah · 23/04/2020 10:09

@Cornettoninja and? No one is saying that staff are doing a bad job or it isn't admirable, but that posting videos dancing around the empty wards is disrespectful. Is getting some likes on tiktok really worth it? And yes, those who have had treatment suspended understand why and are probably largely accepting of the situation, but some of them will die as a result, non covid deaths in the community are also up by a few thousand- this isn't those in the videos fault at all and it's a horrible position to be in, but seeing the empty wards and staff with time on their hands whilst this is happening is crass imo. Agree to disagree whatever, what people do to deal with things is up to them and up to teams, posting it under the hashtag NHS for clout is gross.

Thighmageddon · 23/04/2020 10:09

Elsie and Sylvanian I haven't given an opinion on this either way, I was just posing the question that many could have in their heads right now.

AnnofPeeves · 23/04/2020 10:09

Actually Lyin I have worked at that very hospital (RDH) and had come across him, although I didn't know him well.

lotusbell · 23/04/2020 10:10

I'm not morally outraged and I think staff do need to keep their morale up but I don't think this is the way to do it. These things aren't just quick uploads, they are hours of practice. That's a lot of nurses. We are constantly being told of the long shifts and no loo breaks, so it does seem at odds. I get that it's a bit of fun and a stress reliever but no one else seems to be doing stuff like this. It must be galling for those who are having appointments cancelled etc only to be told staff are hanging round with nothing to do and then seeing videos like this. I get it, but I wish they would find other ways of stress relief than this.

ZezetteEpouseX · 23/04/2020 10:10

I find your thread offensive, inappropriate, of bad taste. What is the point of it?

You rant and are bitter on MN to make yourself feel better. Others can no longer go for a drink with colleagues or see their friends, they do a little dance. It might take YOU 3 hours to master 2 steps, it's a 2 minutes practice for most people.|

We all know that someone will always find something to moan about and be offended by. It's rather pathetic.

Doggybiccys · 23/04/2020 10:10

@SylvanianFrenemies - the reason for scarcity is rather irrelevant here and availability and cost are two different issues.

The point is that there is an ongoing narrative that there is not enough PPE yet we are seeing it being inappropriately used in these videos.

wickedgames · 23/04/2020 10:10

No one is being harmed and certainly not being left to die alone whilst these videos are being made. The areas that are doing it are where elective and non urgent work have been cancelled.

The actual covid wards don't have the time or energy for this. I'm in intensive care and the only time we'd be able to do this would be before or after our shifts, or break times but most are way too knackered. We are too busy stuffing our faces with donated food and drink whilst we can before donning our PPE for several more hours.

It seems some of you just thrive on being miserable pricks.

Moonflower12 · 23/04/2020 10:10

@AnnofPeeves
My DP is wearing his PPE ( mask and eye protection) for a full shift as at his hospital there is not enough to go round. They have gloves as a kind benefactor donated them!

Littlebluetruck · 23/04/2020 10:11

I don’t know. I remember when photographs and videos were coming out of Italy at the peak of their crisis showing the strain the medical staff were under and reading/listening to the words of doctors and nurses comparing the crisis to a war zone.

If Tik Tok videos like these were being released by Italian medics at the same time, it really would have been in bad taste and undermined the severity of the crisis in my view.

Lockheart · 23/04/2020 10:12

I think dancing around hospital wards in the middle of a pandemic is in poor taste and disrespectful.

By all means have a break, and by all means dance, but there's a time and a place and a hospital isn't it.

Doggybiccys · 23/04/2020 10:12

@MadamShazam - many of us posting on this and the other thread DO work for the NHS.

AnnofPeeves · 23/04/2020 10:12

No worries Sylvanian Smile I know how hard my (recently ex) colleagues are working to keep up supplies of PPE, they're doing a brilliant job in tough circumstances.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 23/04/2020 10:13

God how miserable are you.
I suppose you want to ban staff eating gifted chocolates or food from local takeaways too?

Of course patients won’t be left suffering when these are filmed, it will be at shift handover I would imagine. Highly doubt they’re ignoring the emergency buzzer to do a quick tik tok but you’ve obviously no idea what it’s like to work frontline else you wouldn’t be such a miserable killjoy!

Nicknacky · 23/04/2020 10:14

If it cheers them up to do dances, then carry on.

Just don’t put it on social media. That’s the unprofessional part of it.

But then, I’ve never agreed with the hero worship that the media are promoting.

Nicknacky · 23/04/2020 10:15

bloody Actually, as you have asked I don’t agree with all the free food they are getting either.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/04/2020 10:15

We've been told we are not to post anything like that on Facebook and not to wear PPE outside the hospital. In normal circumstances, I'd think they were Kill joys. It I think they are right about it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/04/2020 10:15

AnneofPeeves, if that's so then I'm a bit surprised that you'd judge 'colleagues' for needing the release.

As long as people aren't putting others at risk then I don't care or mind what they're doing.

Veganella · 23/04/2020 10:16

Just don’t put it on social media. That’s the unprofessional part of it
I agree with this actually.
Why would they want to post it on social media? They’re not exactly interesting to watch

AnnofPeeves · 23/04/2020 10:17

That's it nicknacky it doesn't need to be in the public arena. We did all sorts of stuff when I was front line to cheer ourselves up, destress etc, but it was private. Probably s good thing when I think back!
