I'm just nosey and wonder which industries are classed as key workers other than the NHS Police Fire Brigade and Shop Staff.

I know of 3 in my family.

Armed Forces
Social Worker
Dog Unit Support

Rest of the family are working from home but aren't key workers so can't actually go out to work.

@oblada sorry but the 'thank god' about your window cleaner coming back made me laughGrin

Furloughing shouldn't be use if the business could have continued to work safely. I can only hope that HMRC actually scrutinises some claims (though I doubt it...). But this will not help the economy recover.

Sux2 - lol well WFH and looking at dirty windows isn't great :) in all seriousness it seemed a bit of a rushed decision to stop (led by rubbish media reporting) when he's normally on his own doing the work and we pay him by bank transfer anyway. No issue with social distancing at all.

midgebabe · 22/04/2020 21:45

I don't think it was thick, i think there are some misconceptions ...possibly because many countries did restrict to key workers

Also I think many people locked down who didn't need to to give themselves time to judge the situation...my mam has a gardener who stopped for a few weeks and then realised he could legally , safely work, just not take cash payment .

And I suspect in some cases people saw the furlough option and though " oh that sounds good"

I feel so thick having started this thread

Don’t feel that way. If it has helped you, it’s a bonus Wink

Unless you’re in business or massively close to it all, why would you know.

It’s my job to understand the rules and guidance as a senior manager of a large manufacturing and distribution company.

I’ve never felt so lost & not “in the know” in my life. Everyday from when this started has been a huge learning curve (and continues to be even now, 5 weeks later)

No one in the whole world has been through what we’re going through. It’s all new to everyone and not one person has the right or perfect answer to any problem or issue; and yet everyone in any position of power (be that in government, scientific/medical profession or business) is heavily criticised for having an opinion or making a decision. It’s been a tough few weeks for everyone, not just key workers (which of course should have credit, because they’re putting themselves at risk; I just see it from a different angle because everyone I know and who works for us, is doing a cracking job but don’t get any credit).

I work in waste management.

The energy from waste plant is still operating with the weighbridge staff still onsite plus a core management team.

The food waste recycling plant down the road is the same.

The recycling facility still has staff but they have slowed the speed of the picking belt as less staff / social distancing to sort out the material. They still need forklift drivers etc to move the bales of materials.

Obviously the Council still have staff collecting rubbish / recycling and have a backroom team of management / admin support for their activities.

The HGV drivers moving waste around to end production are still working.

The only people I know WFH are Environment Agency staff!
