To think DD isn’t earning enough to live alone in London?

DD is 27 and earns £65k a year. She currently has a long commute in to London for work each day but following her recent divorce and sale of their home, she wants to move to London for a fresh start. She has no DC, so is looking at one bed flats which appear to be around £1,500-£2,000 a month in rent, not to mention all of the bills on top too. I appreciate that DD earns a very good wage for her age, however, I’m concerned that she will be stretching herself too far by attempting to live alone and paying an extortionate amount in rent rather than house sharing, which seems to be the norm for most young professionals. She seems to think she can easily afford it, but DD has never lived alone and doesn’t really seem to appreciate the cost of living, as ex husband always managed the household outgoings etc. AIBU in thinking that DD will be stretched in attempting to live alone on her salary in London with the rental amounts described?

I lived with my friend in Zone 2 (a few years ago now) in a two bed flat (not a nice flat, but a nice area) and we paid £950 each on rent and bills combined. I earned a grand total of £1,600 a month, and was fine. So I think she will be!

Why are pp talking about lodgers when she clearly wants to live alone her anti?
Whether that s being a lidger/flat sharer or having lodger
On 65k unless she has massive deposit of 200k or more she can rent a flat in nice area for less than mortgage would be on same flat

managedmis · 22/04/2020 11:39

Bloody Nora I'd have some fun in London on 65k

Whenwillthisbeover · 22/04/2020 11:39

I think at 27 on that salary she should go for it!

Embracelife · 22/04/2020 11:40

She needs to concentrate of saving a decent deposit for now by being mean, staying in, not buying clothes, manicures etc. Th

She just got divorced...maybe she wants to have some fun for a year or so.... let the woman choose her own destiny . Renting gives flexibility

managedmis · 22/04/2020 11:40

Lodger?

Shudder

Aridane · 22/04/2020 11:41

Bloody hell - my lovely niece is happy as Larry living in London on minimum wage in Zone 2

Settlersofcatan · 22/04/2020 11:42

She absolutely can afford it. Question that she alone can answer is whether it is what she wants to spend her money on.

I chose to live alone in my 20s and have less disposable income because I hated flat sharing but lots of other friends made a different call.

I choose to live south of the river rather than trendy East London but most of my friends make a different choice.

If it doesn't work out, she can move into a flat share, so I think you may be making too big a deal of it. What is the worst case scenario?

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 22/04/2020 11:42

My best friend is 27 and lives just outside the M25 (so admittedly not London London), on her own, on less than half your daughter’s wage Confused £65k is plenty, especially if you budget properly.

KaptenKrusty · 22/04/2020 11:43

Maybe she doesn’t want to stay in and save like crazy right now to buy a place a bit outside of London - maybe she wants To live in a a cool area and enjoy herself fiends a bit! I could have bought a place further out a few years ago - I don’t want to - I like my rented flat is never be able to afford to buy in a trendy area walking distance to work! I’m going to enjoy this lifestyle a few more years pre kids while I still can!

If she isn’t recently divorced she prob needs someone to enjoy herself and relax a bit and have some fun!

Boireannachlaidir · 22/04/2020 11:43

At 27 she can make her own decisions I'd say.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 22/04/2020 11:44

Imagine if OPs daughter reads this thread. 🤣

Katjolo · 22/04/2020 11:44

She can definitely afford it. Where in East London is she looking? I know East London well? Which zone also?

BeijingBikini · 22/04/2020 11:46

I think that's very affordable. I lived in London on 26k a year, £1720 take home, £1000 gone on rent and commute, still saved about £100-400 a month.

Excited101 · 22/04/2020 11:49

Dear god! She’ll be fine! I’m on £40,000 and pay £1100 in rent, plus bills and I run a car. I have plenty left over.

Sparklesocks · 22/04/2020 11:49
Hmm

Excited101 · 22/04/2020 11:50

‘Plenty’ to clarify isn’t any significant savings but allows me to go on holidays, but stuff, keep the car healthy, eat out when I like etc. Not save £50,000 for a flat deposit.

LouLouLoo · 22/04/2020 11:50

I think living on her own is a great idea. It’s important to be able to cope and be okay in your own. If you know you can cope alone you have no fear of leaving poor relationships!

Sunnydaysp · 22/04/2020 11:51

@Katjolo she’s looking at various places but currently she has her eye on a one bed apartment in the Glasshouse Gardens apartment block in Stratford.

I'm laughing at the fact people think 27 is too young to be living alon

17 perhaps, but TWENTY-SEVEN???

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

welshladywhois40 · 22/04/2020 11:51

This isn't a comment re money but maybe about emotional welfare? Following my divorce 5 years ago I went into a houseshare as I wanted company to live with and made some great friends with my flatmates.

And with the money I saved not renting a whole flat I could live in a house with garden and save for a mortgage.

AmelieTaylor · 22/04/2020 11:53

What does she do for a job?

00100001 · 22/04/2020 11:54

oh i missed the part that she was married and now divorced.....

I wonder if PPs still think she's too young to be living alone!

... too young SMH 😂

BarbedBloom · 22/04/2020 11:56

I hate sharing so I can't blame her and she can afford it

TheStuffedPenguin · 22/04/2020 11:59

That's the top end of renting in London . You can get places for about the 1200 pound a month mark . I understand her not wanting to share as she has been married and feels she may want to establish her own space . Does she not have any equity she can use as a deposit ? How much is her current commute as that will offset the rent?
