To be scared I may have broken my foot?

I dropped my iPad on foot earlier today. It’s absolutely killing me. I can weight bear but it’s very painful. Have iced it, elevated it and taken pain killers but it’s still throbbing like hell.

AIBU to be so so worried about going to A&E? I’m going to hold off until the morning in the hope that it eases overnight but if it doesn’t I’m going to have to go for an X-ray aren’t I?

If I go will I have to self-isolate from my family for 14 days? I think I hard the virus in mid-March but of course was never tested. I self-isolated for 7 days then and the rest of the family never came down with symptoms so I suppose I’d still be at risk of bringing it back to the house. Feeling very sorry for myself Sad

apparently A&E's are empty... go and get it checked.

What do you mean gobby?

gobbynorthernbird · 21/04/2020 20:33

I mean the following:-
You've hurt yourself. Go get it sorted. Unless you're some kind of masochist.

Imboredinthehouse · 21/04/2020 20:33

Maybe if you post a picture of your foot someone could advise?
But, for reassurance, I’ve dropped a nearly 3kg catering tin of baked beans on my foot before now. It was agonising, made me walk with a limp for a week & a half and was black up to my ankle. An iPad is significantly lighter but could have landed on an awkward, breakable spot I suppose. If you are worried just go. A&E are very short wait times these days.

gobbynorthernbird · 21/04/2020 20:34

And, unless you're going to drip feed that your partner and children are all shielding, why do you think you'll have to self isolate for 14 days?

SpeckledFrogsLog · 21/04/2020 20:35

I’m kind of hoping that Cyber, plus our local A&E has a very efficient triage process for dealing with potential breaks (well it did pre-pandemic!). I hope I’ll be in and out. I’m more concerned about whether I’m putting my family at increased risk by going?

PositiveVibez · 21/04/2020 20:36

Speaking from experience, I don't think you could have broken your foot.

I have broken mine and when I did, my whole foot and ankle was swollen, black and blue, and there was no way I could have put any weight on it at all. And the pain was unbearable.

Maybe some tendon damage?

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Why don't you call 111 and see what they say.

userxx · 21/04/2020 20:37

Is an iPad heavy enough to do that? Fair enough a pc, but an iPad!

SpeckledFrogsLog · 21/04/2020 20:39

Do you get a kick out such a twat gobby? It was a genuine question that in no way requires an arsey response. If these type of threads irritate you in some way perhaps you should avoid them.

Imbored no sign of major bruising as yet. It happened before lunch so figure it would be coming out by now. It’ll get a good rest overnight and make a judgment call in the morning.

SpeckledFrogsLog · 21/04/2020 20:41

userxx it’s an iPad Pro and landed on its sharp edge rather than flat side IYSWIM? There’s a bit of a cut where it drew blood.

SpeckledFrogsLog · 21/04/2020 20:43

This was just after it happened.

Personally i would not go. Its probably just very badly bruised. And i would imagine painful.. But i would wait and see how it tomorrow.

oakthorn · 21/04/2020 20:46

Did exactly the same thing a week ago. Right on the top of my foot. Was agony for 24 hours but soon settled down. Just have the cut still but pain went fairly quickly. It was very very painful at the time and I am no wimp.

DingDongDenny · 21/04/2020 20:48

I have also broken my foot and unlike PositiveVibez it was sore, but not agony and not much swelling. But I couldn't weight bear

I would ice it, raise it and wait to see how it is in the morning

SpeckledFrogsLog · 21/04/2020 20:51

Thanks folks. Fingers crossed it’ll feel better in the morning. Feeling particularly stupid because two years ago I broke my ankle doing a home workout! Such a klutz Blush

Depending on the pain level, I'd taken analgesia overnight, and if still painful, ring either a minor injuries unit or walk in centre. I'd ring first, because not all have x-ray facilities.

Lostmyunicorn · 21/04/2020 20:54

I’ve broken several toes in one go - the toe end of my foot was black and double it’s normal size. I couldn’t put my foot to the ground. If you can weight bear, it’s probably not broken. However I’d re assess it in the morning.

m00rfarm · 21/04/2020 20:54

I broke my foot and could not weight near in it. However there was nothing they could go. It was a hairline fracture and healed in its own time.

woollylizard · 21/04/2020 20:57

When I broke my foot it didn't particularly hurt or swell I just couldn't walk on it.

Ezira · 21/04/2020 21:43

I went to hospital last week with a broken bone. A&E wouldn’t let me in the door unless 111 had referred me. You may need to ring if you plan on going.

Your foot doesn’t look too bad though. If you can bear weight and move it, it’s unlikely to be broken. The attached image might be helpful in deciding if you need treatment. Typically the doctor asks you to walk four steps and x rays it if you can’t.

To be scared I may have broken my foot?
dontgobaconmyheart · 21/04/2020 21:49

If you're going call 111 first OP, or why not speak with a GP? Ours are doing video call appointments.

Not trying to minimise your pain, so much as point ot that that is going to be bloody painful for a while, it looks sore and is a tender part of the foot. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be off it for a few days. Keep it upright, ice it, keep an eye on it and take something for the pain until you get some sort of professional advice. Hope it heals fast

MyFriendFlicker · 21/04/2020 21:51

I walked around for a week on a broken foot. It went black from toe to ankle and was agony, however I could stand on it. I followed the guidance on NHS website.
When I eventually hobbled to A&E they were a bitHmm at me.
FWIW yours doesn't look too bad. I'd give it a day or two.

Verite1 · 21/04/2020 22:31

I have broken foot twice. Both times the swelling and bruising was horrendous and I knew I immediately had to get it seen. However first time they didn’t xray and I walked on it for a few weeks before it was finally x rayed and the break was seen. See how it is tomorrow.

HermanTheWorm · 21/04/2020 22:45

Broke my foot. Barely coloured. Yours looks horrific and nasty.

I've cracked toes by dropping a phone, and an iPad, before.

I don't visibly bruise on my hands, feet or face.
