To be scared I may have broken my foot?

I dropped my iPad on foot earlier today. It’s absolutely killing me. I can weight bear but it’s very painful. Have iced it, elevated it and taken pain killers but it’s still throbbing like hell.

AIBU to be so so worried about going to A&E? I’m going to hold off until the morning in the hope that it eases overnight but if it doesn’t I’m going to have to go for an X-ray aren’t I?

If I go will I have to self-isolate from my family for 14 days? I think I hard the virus in mid-March but of course was never tested. I self-isolated for 7 days then and the rest of the family never came down with symptoms so I suppose I’d still be at risk of bringing it back to the house. Feeling very sorry for myself Sad

Can’t you go to minor injuries instead of A&E? Our local one does X-rays. Do the 111 online symptoms checker and it will tell you where the nearest one is.

Broke both ankles as a child, could walk in pain so no x ray till 2 weeks later. Both had broken. I'd get it checked out if still painful in the morning. Hope the pain gets better soon Smile

I broke my foot and despite having never broken anything before I absolutely knew what I had done. Total agony and I couldn’t weight bear on it. When I did it it immediately swelled up and went purple - 6 weeks in and I still had some bruising. Ice and elevate and if it’s bothering you in the morning still then ring your GP for advice :)

I hope your foot isn't fractured and you wake up with minimal pain and swelling in the morning

HaggisMuncher · 22/04/2020 00:07

I fractured a metatarsal after a fall and managed to hobble around on a spa weekend with friends before eventually realising that swelling was getting worse and going to hospital for treatment 48 hours later. If it remains as painful or swelling increases, definitely worth getting it checked out. I had a slipper cast for a few weeks which resolved it without any problems (other than occasionally going to work or getting in the shower with one slipper on)

How is the foot today?

Twigletfairy · 22/04/2020 07:54

I've broken my foot before and I could still walk. I had minimal bruising and swelling. I was a child at the time and because I could walk on it my parents refused to take me to be seen for 2 weeks until I was doing a physical activity and my foot swelled so much we couldn't get my shoe off. Not all breaks are the same.

Do you have a local separate minor injuries unit rather than a+e? I've had to take my toddler recently and mine were taking a lot of precautions. She was the only patient there in the whole unit

My foot is feeling a bit better this morning thanks. I expected a lot of bruising but it’s more red than bruised. I can also bend my toes again, which I couldn’t do last night. I don’t think it’s broken thank heavens!! Thanks for all the advice Smile

Broke my foot years ago and didnt know i had done it ! Had a recent xray for joint issues and doc shows me my foot xray and says" Thats a nasty break, when did you do that?" Then looked at me in disbelief when i shrugged and truthfully told him i had absolutely no idea ! Still dont !
