I'm wondering if I'm spending more than necessary during the lockdown.

Anyone care to share what your grocery bills are weekly during the lockdown?

Was £100 for 2 adults and 2 children pre virus - now closer to £200 😩. The kids normally would eat hot meals and snacks at lunch at school mon - fri which are part of their fees and were fed at school 2 nights a week too. So so many more snacks seem to be consumed - I can’t keep up with the rate the snack drawer is emptied

bluechameleon · 21/04/2020 19:25

Our supermarket shop has gone up from 80ish to 130ish (that is including a 10% staff discount), but I suspect we might be spending less overall on food. We are having 1 takeaway a week whereas before we would have 2-3 lunches out per week, a couple of cafe trips plus DH bought lunch at work or in town 3-4 times a week. We would also do 1 or 2 top up shops whereas now we are making do. But then again we have upped our spending with the milkman (more milk because in more, and added bread, yoghurts and cheese) and we are getting a bigger veg box. So I really don't know.

orlarose · 21/04/2020 19:25

About £140 a week, plus we'll have a takeaway one night. 2 adults and 3 kids 5 shad under. Spending slightly more than usual due to no school lunches and increased snacking.

JKScot4 · 21/04/2020 19:27

£90, 2 adults, 1teen, 4 dogs
Actually buying less snacks as we are all at home for meals now.

ohthepigeons · 21/04/2020 19:29

It's interesting reading this as I always thought we were spending too much based on these threads and wondered how people managed to spend £80-100 per week for a family of 4. It turns out they were eating out and getting takeaways a lot which makes me feel loads better.

We eat all meals at home as we did before lockdown, 2 adults and 2 primary aged dc and spend £150-200 per week including toiletries. We eat very well and our spend hasn't changed much.

anxietrist · 21/04/2020 19:30

One week we seriously spent about £400

Hanamuslim · 21/04/2020 19:30

I shop twice a week, spend roughly 120 a week.before this pandemic. Now we are spending towards 180 a week. Its manic but I am.buying numerous items like nappies and wipes in bulk. Sensibly and rationally of course.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/04/2020 19:30

Just to add, although I am spending a lot, one positive is that I am using everyththing. Food waste is really down in my household right now and I intend to continue that when life is normal again. I'm also more aware now of what I really need and what I can live without and it's not the things I would have expected.

Hanamuslim · 21/04/2020 19:30

We are a family of 6 also. Two of the youngsters are in nappies

YappityYapYap · 21/04/2020 19:31

Used to spend about £60-£70 a week, currently spending about £100 a week. 2 adults, 1 three year old and a cat

Lippy1234 · 21/04/2020 19:32

Mine is really high, around £350 per week for 4 adults plus £100 on two takeaways (well one every four evenings).

judemom · 21/04/2020 19:34

@Lippy1234

Mine is very high as well!!!

policeandthieves · 21/04/2020 19:38

7 adults ( it's complicated) including teens £250 -300 week plus bits and pieces. That does include things like washing powder and cleaning materials though.
We haven't really had any takeaways yet but good food. 2 of us out at work but the rest in for lunch as well.
I am hardly spending anything else - just as well!

Hoolajerry · 21/04/2020 19:38

£130 per week ish. About the same as before but probably slightly less as we're not popping out for a coffee or buying lunch because we can't be bothered to prepare it. That's a family of 6 with 2 teens, 2 dogs and 2 cats.

ScarfLadysBag · 21/04/2020 19:41

Was someone seriously using the Blush face at £40 a week?!?!

Pre-lockdown we spent about £70-80 a week for two adults and a toddler. Now we are on about £130 a week, but we've swapped some supermarket stuff for local suppliers, which has been more expensive (but I think we will carry on as the stuff is really nice!)

Lippy1234 · 21/04/2020 19:42

judemom How much is yours?

Ironfloor269 · 21/04/2020 19:43

Family of 3.

Before lockdown - £80 (groceries + DH lunch at work + DD school dinners)

After lockdown - £80 (each and every meal at home)

I still meal plan meticulously and try to use up every last morsel of food. DH has had to have a significant pay cut and my job is really uncertain so I've got to be careful re spending.

LagunaBubbles · 21/04/2020 19:54

still spend the same, on average £40 a week for two adults - we eat very well!

Nope don't buy it, that's only £20,each for a whole week of meals and snacks.

Samtsirch · 21/04/2020 19:56

£100 per week, 3 adults and dog.

Designjunkie · 21/04/2020 20:03

Quite high I’d say and varies but most weeks £350+ excluding one takeaway a week for around £70. We try to buy organic. Family of 6.

12stepCAKE · 21/04/2020 20:06

Family of 6 normally about £140 a week including toiletries, nappies and cleaning products. That's at Tesco. I do a lot of meal planning. At the moment due to the limit about £100 as we can't have more than 80 items so I'm being extra careful buying multi pack where possible and being even more precise about snacks etc. Kids aren't happy as we tend to be down to the end of the cereal and no bread or milk by the time I can get another delivery but dh works as a key worked during the times of shopping and we only have one car at the moment. So I can't go shopping and if I could there's no one to watch the kids

riotlady · 21/04/2020 20:07

Probs about £120 at the moment- buying endless berries so DD will eat some sodding fruit and not get scurvy, 12 pints of milk a week (I don’t even drink it!) and ingredients for my stress baking. Haven’t managed to get any flour for weeks so have ordered a £15 organic flour box online to see me through xD

MrsPworkingmummy · 21/04/2020 20:10

We are spending about £600-700 a month on food. This includes a £35 veg and fruit box delivered weekly, then a huge Asda delivery whenever we can get it (usually once a week to 10 days). We are all shielding at the moment so are prepared to pay higher prices if it means we can get food delivered.

GameSetMatch · 21/04/2020 20:12

£180 a week at the moment I don’t know what’s going on! Usually around £110.

orlarose · 21/04/2020 20:14

I am always amazed at people who can do it on £40. Our £140 doesn't include lunches, laundry products or nappies. I feel like if I was to go lower we'd definitely be going hungry as we'd have to miss out snacks.
