I'm wondering if I'm spending more than necessary during the lockdown.

Anyone care to share what your grocery bills are weekly during the lockdown?

I do buy a lot of premium juices and stuff like pomegranate, kombucha, very expensive dark chocolate.

I'm definitely going to rethink my grocery shopping habit.

We also spend about £40 per week on groceries for 2 adults pre lockdown, a little more now due to lack of choice. We very rarely eat meat or chicken and we don't drink alcohol, so it's plenty for us. DH isn't a snacker either but I am, always get crackers/chocolate/biscuits Grin I tend to bake a cake once a week too!

Lolwhat · 21/04/2020 21:14

£160 a week for family of 7

mountainofdreams · 21/04/2020 21:14

Two adults, child and a newborn. Pre Corona we spent about £80 per week. Now it's more like £130 per week.

Linkyhere · 21/04/2020 21:15

Sorry X post

MigginsMs · 21/04/2020 21:17

We have been spending about £200 a week since lockdown, it’s nuts. 2 adults, a teenager who eats more than the adults, 1 small 11 year old. Having us all at home all day every day costs a fortune in food! I got free hot drinks and fruit at work and my husband ate lunch and dinner at work. He’s now furloughed so eating here

GogoGobo · 21/04/2020 21:17

Ours is obscene! £350 😩

onanothertrain · 21/04/2020 21:18

judemomso long as you're not spending money you can't afford then why should you hang your head in shame. It doesn't matter if you spend 10 times the amount someone else does.

Chrisinthemorning · 21/04/2020 21:19

I think we were spending £400 per month before and probably nearer £500 now. 2 adults, 8 year old. Buying milk and eggs for my parents as we have a milkman.
Probably drinking more than before, plus feeding DS and DH at lunchtime.

inwood · 21/04/2020 21:20

£250 a week at the moment used to be around £120. We are saving money though as not paying £25 a week for school dinners, £25 a week for my breakfast / coffee and about £6/7 a day for my lunch. Dh's lunches were less but around £4 a day.

No eating out / take away / cafe lunches at the park at the weekend, commuting and petrol has saved ££££.

ImPeckish · 21/04/2020 21:20

I'm definitely going to rethink my grocery shopping habit.

But if you can afford it, enjoy what you have and don't waste much, then there's no reason for you to feel bad and you don't need to change! :)

catsjammies · 21/04/2020 21:24

Family of 4, youngest is 15m. We're spending about £220 a week on Ocado 😱 buying a decent amount of alcohol and nappies too. Might feel more as last couple of shops I've also had to order new toiletries too. Still.

We also like fancy coffee as DH and I will have 2 or 3 coffees a day each. That adds up.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 21/04/2020 21:25

If you can afford it, you don't waste it there is no reason to be ashamed🤷🏻

DuchessOfBeddington · 21/04/2020 21:26

We are about £200 per week for 2 adults. Don’t feel too bad OP, although I would love to know what sort of meals you are having!

Ughmaybenot · 21/04/2020 21:28

Mm probably around £50-£60 a week for two adults. Roughly.

Ughmaybenot · 21/04/2020 21:29

Neither of us are snackers, neither drink at home and I get several lunches a week at work for free.

judemom · 21/04/2020 21:30

@ImPeckish

Thank you! You're right!!! I do enjoy my daily kombucha and organic artisan coffee beans, etc.

This is not the time to scale back! I feel dreadful in lockdown.

orlarose · 21/04/2020 21:32

I'd say it's quite high if you then eat out on top of that. We spend about £300 per week eating out, obviously that has stopped now and we're saving money. But this explains how we can keep our supermarket food down to £140 p/w.

SushiGo · 21/04/2020 21:33

If you want to cut down, I recommend basic meal planning. Decide 7 meals you want to have that week, and buy the veg, protein and starch you need for those.

Then make a quick list of what you really need for 7 days of lunches and breakfast and drinks. Think about what you've thrown out this week. Did some pita breads go mouldy? Buy one less pack this week.

Then go check your cupboards and see what you don't need because you've already got it and cross it off the list.

When you're in the supermarket check if there's a cheaper version of the item you've picked up. Yes? Great, try that one this week.

You could easily halve your shopping bill and you will be raking the cash in. You could save £800 a month easily!!

okiedokieme · 21/04/2020 21:34

£70 - 2 adults, I'm being more careful. We buy alcohol separately Confused

Katieweasel · 21/04/2020 21:34

Actually less. Around £20 or £30 a week. But DH is doing the shopping as I'm still at work and he doesn't buy treats. He thinks of food as fuel the weirdo. Me, I'm all about eating for pleasure!

judemom · 21/04/2020 21:35

@SushiGo

Yes, definitely going to meal after the lockdown is over.

Though we don't waste much food if at all, we just pay for premium food.

But to save 800 every year would make DH very happy, although he's the one who eats the most.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Absolutely, we need every little joy we can find right now, and if for you that means enjoying artisan coffee, bloody go for it!

SonjaMorgan · 21/04/2020 21:37

Around £60 a well for a family of 4, the DC are older teenagers. I make pretty much everything from scratch and we have minimal amounts of meat. I enjoy foraging and growing herbs. I also enjoy cooking and baking.

Tiredtiredtired100 · 21/04/2020 21:45

I’ve upped my budget to £250 a month (at least £100 of which is chocolate, coke and crisps I reckon!). It’s just me, my DS and a cat and I don’t buy many branded things and am veggie (cuts costs not buying meat). I do two big shops a month for around £80 each and pick up some extras from the corner shop.
