To think people shouldn't walk to my village?

Hello,

With the knowledge that this will make me sound quite snooty, I firstly apologise and explain it is because I worry for my own and family's safety as we are all asthmatic and at heightened risk from COVID-19.

We live in a very pretty little village, in a small conservation area in a semi rural location. We are about 2 miles from the nearest modern housing estate. Usually, the lane through the village has a couple of regular dog walkers.

Now that we are lockdown and people are getting out to exercise in the sun (great), the lane is like a motorway. There is a constant stream of people from the housing estate coming for their walk to the village. I understand it must be dull to walk around a modern housing estate. Over 500m there were 30 people. Usually you might see 1. We can't even go for a short walk without risk of coming into contact with people.

Entire large families are coming with 5-6 children out of control on bikes etc, treating the lane past our houses like a park. I've spotted people touching our walls, gates etc, even caught one nosing in the garden!

Many of these people are not staying into the side to observe social distancing, and have dogs off the lead that need to be fetched away.

AIBU to think people should stick to their own areas for their exercise? In a way, I something feel that if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

If it’s walkable from their house, it is their local area.

KrisAkabusi · 21/04/2020 14:03

This must be a wind-up! Yes, you do sound snooty.

I something feel that if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

What a horrible attitude.

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 21/04/2020 14:03

It's a local lane for local people.
These people are local.

Figgygal · 21/04/2020 14:03

Yup you’re right you do sound snooty

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 21/04/2020 14:04

You’re joking, right?

BackforGood · 21/04/2020 14:04

Of course YABU.
I walk from my house every day It is nice to mix it up a bit with different walks in different directions.

I've spotted people touching our walls, gates etc, even caught one nosing in the garden! you do realise walls won't become ill ? Hmm

When I go out, I don't touch anything, and you don't nee to either. If someone does lean on a wall, or touch it, it won't affect you unless you are planning to head on out and lick the walls afterwards ?

PurpleDaisies · 21/04/2020 14:04

NIMBYism at it’s finest.

Redlocks28 · 21/04/2020 14:04

I something feel that if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

I ‘something’ feel that you are really unpleasant.

Lailaloo747 · 21/04/2020 14:05

You do realise it’s not YOUR village?? If you went abroad on holiday would you expect the locals to not let you in and say “if you wanted to live here you should have bought your own villa”?
People can walk where they like....
We live in a pretty little village and in normal circumstances I’d know pretty much everyone I walked by...not the case at the moment though. Lots of new faces and people out riding their bikes.
I appreciate it can be difficult trying to walk along a lane and adhere to the ‘social distancing’ but that doesn’t really give you the right to claim the village as ‘yours’ and not let anyone else in.

saraclara · 21/04/2020 14:05

Jesus. I can't believe you actually posted this, OP.

Really? Only people who can afford the extra £100k should be allowed to walks somewhere pretty? You don't own the damn village.

Not only are you a massive snob, you're selfish too. Ugh.

Hingeandbracket · 21/04/2020 14:06

I've been for a snoop around the two new housing estates near us for a couple of my walks.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 21/04/2020 14:06

I don't particularly like people walking past my house and stopping outside my front gate to chat either, but there's not a lot I can do about it! Get over yourself.

PawPawNoodle · 21/04/2020 14:06

People aren't allowed to walk on a motorway so I think you'll find it isn't like a motorway at all.

Very glad that you and your family were able to cough up the extra 100k to not have to live near those scummy new-estaters.

Glitteryone · 21/04/2020 14:06

OP I get where you’re coming from.

I live very rurally and when I go a walk I don’t see a single person. I can understand why you’re feeling like this.

However, YABU - the lane is 2 miles from the housing estate, therefore it IS their local area also.

Notmyrealname855 · 21/04/2020 14:06

The £100k comment is mean! Touching gates etc and snooping in gardens isn’t nice obviously... you’ll just need to be extra careful with what you touch. Comments about house pricing are very unreasonable

ThePlantsitter · 21/04/2020 14:06

What are you doing about food shopping op? What if people told you to stay in the area of your house? Or are you getting deliveries but presumably that kind of nearness is ok?

saraclara · 21/04/2020 14:07

Okay. You got me. There's no way this can be a serious OP. Nobody is that unpleasant.

Cyrilsneer14 · 21/04/2020 14:07

OMG !!! not noseing in your garden thats Dreadful

georgialondon · 21/04/2020 14:07

This is so ridiculous I can hardly believe it's legit Grin

Keeva2017 · 21/04/2020 14:07

You cannot be real? You don’t want people in the cheap seats to even walk past you? Clearly they are smarter than you. 100k less but have access to the same beautiful scenery. Ha ha more fool you!

Parkandride · 21/04/2020 14:07

Consider it your charitable act for the year allowing the poor to escape from their ghastly modern houses to look at your garden walls Biscuit

iklboo · 21/04/2020 14:08

Nah. OP is channelling this.

To think people shouldn't walk to my village?
Hingeandbracket · 21/04/2020 14:08

If you went abroad on holiday would you expect the locals to not let you in and say “if you wanted to live here you should have bought your own villa”?
Actually that is pretty much what did happen in my childhood visits to Wales and Cornwall on summer holidays. So much resentment and anti-tourist anti-English sentiment that we started fucking off overseas where we at least couldn't understand the abuse.

ReadilyAvailable · 21/04/2020 14:09

The house price comment towards the end really is amazing. Just incredible. Clearly these people are too poor to be allowed to walk in the direction of this village. They must head only in the directions in which they could afford a house. 😆

Moondust001 · 21/04/2020 14:09

If they are all hanging around your village, perhaps you should go and walk around their estate. It'll be empty, right?
