Were being made yesterday in cars and on motorcycles with extremely loud exhausts blasting around at full tilt. Perhaps it was the absence of other traffic, but it does seem as if some bellends are using it as an excuse to roar around in their fucking noisy bellend-mobiles

@PinkSparklyPussyCat you sound like a girl after my own heart. Thank you for joining me. This MN thread is why so many people think this forum is nasty and full of ‘mean girls’. I’m immoral for driving a fast car on occasion but holidays in big planes are apparently ok because they’re a ‘means to an end’. I didn’t know holidays to foreign climes were more essential than my hobby.

Out of interest, is there a list of pre-approved MN hobbies that don’t result in people getting abused simply because other posters don’t like them or can’t understand why others would enjoy them? Confused

If you like, @Hingeandbracket I’ll go and do a video for you of my car up on the ramps and show you each individual component that will be affected if I don’t drive it on a fairly regular basis? Such as the seals, valves, cylinders, brake pads, belts, fluids (fuel can absorb water and rust the car from the inside out...), tyres... I’m sure I’d be more criticised for driving a car that was not well-maintained, potentially causing an accident.

If you sat on your bottom on the sofa for weeks on end, you’d probably seize up a bit too, wouldn’t you?

I can’t believe I’m even playing along here. 😆

Winterwoollies · 20/04/2020 12:04

@PinkSparklyPussyCat also I’d love a pre ‘72 Stingray C3.

Tinabn · 20/04/2020 12:07

Our road is very quiet at the moment but too many drivers think they are the only ones on it so they can recreate the Monaco Grand Prix. The single track road I use when dropping off my DM’s supplies seem to be a favourite spot for idiots coming around blind corners at stupid MPH who glare at me for daring to be coming the other way, luckily at snails pace because I used to use it everyday AND KNOW THAT PRATS LIKE YOU IN YOUR OLD SOUPED UP BMWs COULD BE AROUND THE CORNER WAYNE.

Runnerduck34 · 20/04/2020 12:08

We live about 3 miles away from an "A " road that runs from London to the coast. On the hot weekend a couple of weeks ago there was the continually loud droning hum of motorbikes using the road. The occasional one may have been a keyworker/ essential journey but there were far too many of them for that, in fact they seemed to come in convoys ( as is normal on a bank holiday weekend). Which did wind me up as one of the upsides of lockdown imo is lack of road noise when sitting in my garden! Personally I think any vehicle that causes so much noise pollution from 3 miles away should be banned!
Also had what sounded like two cars racing along at high speed along the country lane outside our house a couple of days ago, could literally have killed someone if they had met a cyclist, horse rider, jogger.

MorganKitten · 20/04/2020 12:12

Sorry my key worker father rides a motorbike. Maybe rethink.

Hingeandbracket · 20/04/2020 12:13

Don't need a video - just an explanation, brief one will do.

(fuel can absorb water and rust the car from the inside out...

I'm fully aware of the hygroscopic properties of fuel and some kinds of brake fluid - what I am not getting is why your car is so uniquely badly engineered that it is massively susceptible. Bu no doubt you can explain it.

MrsExpo · 20/04/2020 12:15

I agree with the noise nuisance issue.

For those of you who are "just taking the car for a run" ... around here, people are getting fines for that, and quite rightly in my view.

MarieQueenofScots · 20/04/2020 12:20

I'm like that with some of the posters on MN. I cringe at how judgemental and intolerant they sound

Intolerant over something that harms the environment both from exhaust and noise pollution? Sure - I’ll wear the badge with pride.

People who put their own vanity above those things do look ridiculous. Their choice to do so.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 20/04/2020 12:24

I haven’t driven my car for 5 weeks, it’s about 10 years old, I took it for a ‘drive’ on Saturday, well attempted, it’s fucked!! The hand break resisted coming off, and when it finally it, my breaks pads, well there was little break in them. Thankfully I only tried it 20 metres down the road and back. MOT only done in January and passed. So yes your car can be fucked up!!!

Winterwoollies · 20/04/2020 12:24

@Hingeandbracket oh you, you sound such a wally. 😆

Well, one of my main reasons for wanting to keep my car in its optimum condition is because it cost me an absolute TON of money. That’s a big reason. Same reason as you probably wouldn’t leave your house unlocked with the windows open and the tap running.

I’m not sure you actually want me to explain my mechanical reasoning do you, so much as you’re enjoying trying to make me look foolish on your thread to give yourself a little ego boost. I get it, lockdown IS boring.

I run my expensive and noisy car to keep it running beautifully. folds chamois leathers and whistles along to The Chain

Oops, I forgot to add smug and self satisfied.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2020 12:29

My husband is a doctor-scientist-superhero and he rides a quad bike to get to work. Sorry.

Sorry my key worker father rides a motorbike. Maybe rethink.

No one is complaining about people doing essential driving sensibly.

This thread isn't about your DH and DF. If winterwoolies is driving sensibly and really isn't annoying loads of people then it's not particularly about her either.

If he cap doesn't fit, no need to wear it.

DDil considers riding a motorbike to work (at the hospital) a lot safer than her usual bus journey, not as relaxing, but better from a social distancing point of view.

MarieQueenofScots · 20/04/2020 12:31

Oops, I forgot to add smug and self satisfied

Sure, why not? Neither cause distress or harm to others/the environment.

Winterwoollies · 20/04/2020 12:34

@MonkeyToesOfDoom Why do you think it’s ok to call me names?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2020 12:34

DDil considers riding a motorbike to work (at the hospital) a lot safer than her usual bus journey, not as relaxing, but better from a social distancing point of view.

She's probably right. Unless she is unfortunate enough to be in the path of the people driving/riding unnecessarily and unsafely.

If people haven't experience this bad behaviour so are misunderstanding the complaint, you're lucky!

user1465335180 · 20/04/2020 12:38

Fortunately thè lack of traffic has stopped some muppet from letting their DC ride a small quad bike up and down the street, no safety harness, no helmets, usually about 30 miles an hoùr. Presumably the howl of the bike is too noticable at the moment, at least they won't hurt themselves now

Hingeandbracket · 20/04/2020 12:38

I really do.

I have owned more than 40 cars in my lifetime. I have rebuilt engines, changed clutches, changed engines etc etc etc.

In all that time I have never encountered a car that was such a delicate flower that it couldn't be left for a few months without getting a damn good thrashing. Now obviously I clearly haven't been meddling with anything anything like as expensive as your rare and identifying car, so I just wanted to know what the different and clearly more advanced engineering was like that very short term lack of use causes damage.

Why do you think it's ok to cause unnecessary noise? Then brag about it? Then boat about the ridiculous nature of the vehicle you own and then call the OP names?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/04/2020 12:42

Sure, why not? Neither cause distress or harm to others/the environment.

I’m causing a lot less damage to the planet than a lot of people so don’t expect me to apologise for having some fun.

@Winterwoollies ignore the name calling, it just shows they aren’t capable of having a reasoned discussion.

Hingeandbracket · 20/04/2020 12:43

It isn't
The hand break [sic] resisted coming off, and when it finally it, my breaks pads, well there was little break in them. Thankfully I only tried it 20 metres down the road and back. MOT only done in January and passed. So yes your car can be fucked up!!!
So your hand brake was a bit sticky and your brakes need a bit of warmth in them to get working again. Hardly fucked. And no doubt your car isn't some exotic (let's not forget expensive) track day weapon.

Oh I don’t, I know your type very well.

Not surprising you see it as a race to the bottom.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/04/2020 12:47

Poster starts thread about the unnecessary behaviour of people.

Hingeandbracket

Were being made yesterday in cars and on motorcycles with extremely loud exhausts blasting around at full tilt.

Poster comes on bragging about indulging in that exact behaviour.

Winterwoollies

I took my noisy car (apparent bellend machine) for a blast yesterday because it needed running. And I justified it by putting a little bit of fuel in it. It didn’t need fuel but it did need running. It is noisy and fast and loud and it cost me a lot of money so turning it over and keeping it running well is an essential trip for me. Yesterday was the only day I could do it.

I wonder what other behaviour that other posters would like to brag about that others wouldn't particularly care for?

If someone posted about too many people spittig in the street, would spitters pop on for a brag?
If someone posted about too many people beating dogs, would dog beaters pop on for a brag?
If someone posted about too many people killing kids, would kid killers pop on for a brag?

Where's the line? Or should we always expect every thread to be the same?
"Lots of people do X"
"Well I love doing X"

If that's the case, what's the point? What's the point of the braggers commenting other than to be goady and to enjoy the negative reactions they get? Seems the corner stone of trolling to me. What a sad life it must be.
