Were being made yesterday in cars and on motorcycles with extremely loud exhausts blasting around at full tilt. Perhaps it was the absence of other traffic, but it does seem as if some bellends are using it as an excuse to roar around in their fucking noisy bellend-mobiles

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I would love to share but it’s not very usual so might be a bit identifying and I’m already getting lynched here for my ‘immoral’ past time! 😆

Even though I’m sure the posters calling me that definitely wouldn’t be so hypocritical as to enjoy annual holidays abroad on a plane...I bet instead of holidays they all line up in the garden for a week of self-flagellation. Quietly of course, so as not to disturb the neighbours.

I should have known better. Cars are simply not acceptable on Mumsnet unless they leave no environmental trace, are the size of a sandwich box and cost 12p to run during their entire lifespans. However, they cannot be pedal-powered as cycling is also unacceptable...

Winterwoollies · 20/04/2020 11:09

@MonkeyToesOfDoom it’s a track car. It’s normally on a track. Only it’s lockdown and all circuits and racing are closed. I’m also really pregnant so not racing currently.

It had to be driven so it continued to work. It also occasionally needs fuel. How much of a disturbance is me driving past on a Sunday going to cause you? Do you live in a monastery? Have you taken a vow of silence? Are you that delicate that a decibel of noise from another person will cause an attack of the vapours? Crikey, I’m not sitting outside people’s homes revving, I’m driving past in a car that’s loud. Tonnes of people love to see it being driven. I get waves. I go to rallies.

Should I set fire to it in a quarry just in case someone is offended by the sound of me driving past?!

Please, get a grip.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/04/2020 11:11

I can't say I blame you @Winterwoollies! I love cars apart from mine, which is the most boring car on the planet.

ponchek · 20/04/2020 11:13

I didn't know the guidelines specified what kind of vehicle you're allowed to use ... and I suspect the likelihood of catching the virus from a motorcyclist going past with a helmet on is pretty much zero ...

Lockdown isn't about being judgemental and restricting others' rights to be individual. It's about keeping safe. Maybe more traffic at the weekend as in the week they're working??

Rebootingagain · 20/04/2020 11:16

I love on the Isle of Man

Out of towns many of the roads have no speed loot, so the first sign of a sunny day with quiet roads and you are quite likely to be passed by a bike or car doing 120 mph plus out for a hoon.

They have introduced a temporary 40mph limit to stop people doing that and the potentially taking up hospital spaces and emergency service time.

Also takes away the temptation just to go out for a blast because people are bored.

thenightsky · 20/04/2020 11:17

@Winterwoollies What is it? I had to sell on my lovely old Impreza recently as the cost of repairs were getting to be more than the car was worth. I miss it. Sad

RestaurantoffBroadway · 20/04/2020 11:17

Flying will date too. But at least it's a means to an end. Like killing animals is distasteful but a means to the end of eating. Nobody flies in a jumbo jet just for a laugh - same as nobody will likely in future drive about just to hear a lovely roary noise (?!)

Who says everyone with a noisy exhaust drives like a bellend?

MichaelBoobins · 20/04/2020 11:20

My husband is a doctor-scientist-superhero and he rides a quad bike to get to work. Sorry.

leckford · 20/04/2020 11:24

Lots of racing motorcyclists around here. Quite a few boy racers having serious accidents on the mainly empty dual carriage ways around here. One involving 3 people in a car, all drunk crashed into a tree. Involved several police, fire engines, ambulance and air ambulance. They should go to prison for wasting essential staff’s time and costing huge amounts of ££

puffinandkoala · 20/04/2020 11:25

Curtain twitching about the neighbour going out more than once a day is one thing.

Complaining about dangerous and noisy driving is another.

Can some of you really not see the difference?

puffinandkoala · 20/04/2020 11:26

Who says everyone worh a loud exhaust drives like a bellend

Me, because they do. And they're always male. They whizz past our local high street and all the men stop with admiration and all the women look irritated. I've no idea why such stupid exhausts are even allowed.

Louiselouie0890 · 20/04/2020 11:33

Puffinandkoala your mistaken, I'm female I have what people would class as a loud exhaust. I dont drive like a bellend. I know I dont as I have a personal connection with how bad driving can be dangerous without going into detail. I know for a fact I dont drive dangerously.

Not everyone has a modified car to be obnoxious some people just like it. Its not just sound it modifies your cars performance. It's a hobby. Arent we all for not grouping people together and judging????

Hingeandbracket · 20/04/2020 11:38

It had to be driven so it continued to work.

What about it will stop working if not driven?

Are you suggesting the pistons will seize in the bores? (you mentioned seizing up earlier) - or something else? Main bearings? Big Ends? What?

You can explain the mechanics of how it must be regularly used without telling us what it is.

I'm not male and I've been known to stop and admire cars in the street and I'm in my element at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. One of the highlights of our US holidays has been the cars - Camaro, Mustang, Corvette Stingray (I still smile fondly at that one and will buy one if I win the lottery).

Alsohuman · 20/04/2020 11:44

The normally busy road outside our house has been preternaturally quiet for the last four weeks. We’re clearly very law abiding here.

Biker47 · 20/04/2020 11:44

I took my loud car to work yesterday, took my even louder motorbike to work today.

MarieQueenofScots · 20/04/2020 11:47

I just cringe for them to be honest, poor lambs have no idea how ridiculous they look/sound!

TroysMammy · 20/04/2020 11:47

When my DP came home yesterday after dropping food off to his disabled client he commented on the amount of cars he saw on the roads and quite a few had 4 young men in them.

ChocolateDove · 20/04/2020 11:47

One of my neighbours was doing numerous journeys yesterday in their very loud car, deliberately revving it louder as well each time. I'm going to laugh a lot when they finally break the car. Grin

Not all that surprised though, two other houses had people over for visits. No one here seems to care that much about covid.

ChocolateDove · 20/04/2020 11:49

Did see someone doing about 60 going into a town (30 limit) and from the noise they made they didn't slow down. Sadly nowhere near to get the ref number though.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/04/2020 11:54

I'm like that with some of the posters on MN. I cringe at how judgemental and intolerant they sound.

WeAllHaveWings · 20/04/2020 12:02

The majority of cars with loud exhausts in residential areas are owned by bellends where the main purpose of the exhaust is the attention seeking noise it produces. If you want extra HP in your car buy a car with the extra HP and a quiet exhaust and stop being selfish! We have a bellend in our cul-de-sac that very kindly wakes us up early when he revs the bloody thing when he starts it to go to work on weekends, or he'll be doing something to the car and rev it regularly with absolutely no consideration for others.

Of course there will be the minority that use them on track which is not ideal, but fair enough.

Exhausts aside, there was a post on our local police FB saying there has been an increase in excessive speeding and also drink driving in our area during the lockdown and telling people traffic cops are still out there.
