Neighbours and my WIFI

Imrubbishatuserables · 19/04/2020 21:15

Hey!
Straight to point I got a new neighbour in my block of flat a few months ago and she asked for my wifi password to connect her console to so they could watch netflix.. i thought why not.. one other thing connected to it wont harm and she has just moved in.. it's her first home she hasn't had chance to set up her own yet. She then gets a new tv in the last few weeks and connects to my wifi but she has also connected her phone and her mates phone to it as well as they are picking up our google speakers on the network her mate joked they should play songs through my sons one in his room from their phones. So I have no idea how to change the password but would I be unreasonable to turn it off every night at 8PM? Considering we are in lockdown and she cant get her own during this time as they will need to come and connect it up. Previous tenant in that flat never had wifi either.

You will be legally responsible for whatever they download.

This. Your name attached to whatever they download and whom ever they share your password with.

Herpesfreesince03 · 19/04/2020 21:56

Are you serious?? I can’t believe she was cheeky enough to ask for it. And I can’t believe you gave it to her??! Change the password, it’s not hard!!

Imrubbishatuserables · 19/04/2020 21:58

I know I was just being nice. Without thinking and also thinking oh I'm not at home most of the week as I'll be at work as DS with be at school. It's off for now. I've looked at the guides online and cant seem to find the logon details to get on the page to change it. They arent on the router. I will call them first thing when they open at 8am to get them to give me step by step of how to change it. It was really stupid of me. I have only had in my flat for 7 months before that I didnt have it either.. even more reason to think before doing anything.

Change the password. Simple as that. Don't give your WiFi code out to anyone again.

Samtsirch · 19/04/2020 21:59

Precisely what @Daftodil says.
Read and re read that post.

Weregoingonanadventure · 19/04/2020 22:00

You're not legally responsible. Your name might end up attached as part of an investigation but you would never be held kegall responsible. If that was the case then every person who ever downloaded child abuse images but wasnt the bill payer of the household would not be convicted. The bill payer would be. Has that ever happened? No.

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/04/2020 22:00

Change and see if she is cheeky enough to complain.

Phifedean123 · 19/04/2020 22:00

Get it changed and don't let them have the new one. You don't need to give them any reason just that your not comfortable with it. End of convo. Anything they look at by accident or on purpose you will be liable for!

Nottherealslimshady · 19/04/2020 22:01

Change the password. Just change the password.

Weregoingonanadventure · 19/04/2020 22:01

*legally responsible

vera99 · 19/04/2020 22:02

What would Jesus have done? Love thy neighbour as thyself!

Talia99 · 19/04/2020 22:03

You are not legally responsible for what they download, but you may end up having to show you didn’t download it. It’s more likely they will stream bootlegged films / music than anything more serious but that may be hassle enough. Also, this probably breaches the Ts & Cs of your account.

I don’t think you were wrong to let them use it - it’s a neighbourly thing to do but that’s for a day or two while waiting for their router to arrive not four months. Definitely change the password and tell them your employer required you to do it. If you really must, give them a few days notice before doing so.

MYL1980 · 19/04/2020 22:03

I'd change both my network name and password. If they come around again tell them you cancelled your internet to save money and using your phone data for internet connection. Since they are your neighbours and you are now stuck with them I wouldn't want any retaliatory behaviour from them. They might get offended you cut them off. Keep your distance from those moochers!

TehBewilderness · 19/04/2020 22:05

There should be a label on the bottom that has the default ID and password.
If there is all you need do is use an unbent paper clip to reset your wifi router. There is a very small hole at the back that is the reset. Quite likely that is what customer service will walk you through.

Wannabangbang · 19/04/2020 22:06

Go into your settings get all her devices taken off then change password and name of your broadband and tell her you've had it cut off as you can't afford it

Imboredinthehouse · 19/04/2020 22:06

Omg def turn it off. Never heard of them but

malmi · 19/04/2020 22:07

I don't think there's anywhere you can get directsave that you can't get other mainstream ADSL broadband like BT.

Imrubbishatuserables · 19/04/2020 22:07

Unfortunately I dont have a laptop or anything o make a wired connection to the router. I use phone, tablet or my TV.

Wannabangbang · 19/04/2020 22:07

Resetting it won't help as when it turns back on all devices will reconnect

HavenDilemma · 19/04/2020 22:09

Turn the router off at the plug. Now! Do you have mobile data on your phone which you could use until morning? Why should they get your internet tonight???

Imboredinthehouse · 19/04/2020 22:10

@Imrubbishatuserables see my link for moneysupermarket & instructions above, you can do that on your phone.

HavenDilemma · 19/04/2020 22:13

I've found the info you need OP!
Go to 192.168.1.1

The username is admin
The password is also admin

Then select options to change the password

Notapheasantplucker · 19/04/2020 22:13

I can already tell you're going to cave in and let them use it again when she comes knocking... don't! She's a cheeky fucker

Mammatino · 19/04/2020 22:14

Change it immediately. If they are downloading anything illegal you are responsible for it. I had this old neighbour Who photographed my password and basically tethered all her Devices and phones, her mates and Drug dealer boyfriends phone to my WiFi. We were called by the internet provider about unusual activity on the account, they had upped our usage by 42% in a month. She had the cheek to ask if we hadn’t paid the bill when we knocked them all off it. People like this are cheeky fuckers and don’t see the need to pay for things. When they can get mugs like us to do it for them.
