With so many Fruit Picking Jobs available aibu to think that a few of the people already in this country would want to take them up

It feels as if we are paying 1m to stay at home rather than take up this work
Its hard work no doubt but also pays £10-15 an hour is it beneath too many people?

@ThrowingGoodAfterBad How have I dismissed it, I said in my post that some of the points were valid? Obviously people don't want to leave their kids, why would you, unless you had no other choice. Which a lot of the foreign farm workers don't.
My point, in response to the Op asking why British people don't do the jobs, was that it's obvious why farmers don't want to employ locals - they don't want to have to deal with all the stuff people have listed in this thread, they just want people who'll turn up and do what's needed and they currently get that from the foreign workers.
I'm not sure why you're explaining Eastern European cultures to me though, I'm from this culture and I also live in the UK so I do know the cultural differences.

@fromzerotohero have you ever seen a strawberry plant before? How the fucking hell are you proposing we machine pick those without damaging them? People on mumsnet really are on a different planet.

It's not about exploitation or anything so sinister, frankly if the public had to pay what food was worth, subsidies wouldn't be necessary in 2020. As it stands the £/tonne of grain is largely static since the 1980s but all of my direct costs have risen at least triple fold.

@frillyfarmer thats bad. What are you going to do when locals are refusing to work and foreigners wont be coming after brexit? Not sure how anyone can be coming now tbh during pandemic? What if they are passing Romianian corona on british strawberries? Oh wait, british wash them im bleach so its all good lol

Saying that these things are valid and then adding but they aren’t does sound a bit dismissive. Many people here do not have the choice to leave their kids and homes. They have no one to leave kids with, and will become homeless if they leave their homes. You don’t really seem to acknowledge those as blockers. I’m not saying East Europeans find it easy, but they have those options. Bad options are still options.
