Fruit picking Jobs

billysboy · 18/04/2020 09:37

With so many Fruit Picking Jobs available aibu to think that a few of the people already in this country would want to take them up

It feels as if we are paying 1m to stay at home rather than take up this work
Its hard work no doubt but also pays £10-15 an hour is it beneath too many people?

OP posts:
DanceItOut · 19/04/2020 20:14

A lot want pickers living on site or nearby. Not many people are just able to up and relocate. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I would happily pick fruit and veg etc if there was somewhere local I could do so.

MigginsMs · 19/04/2020 20:16

@grannyjacob there are strict limits on working time, breaks etc for workers under 18. Although they are also cheaper.

Bunnyfuller · 19/04/2020 20:17

All these reasons why UK workers can’t do it.

How do you think the Eastern Europeans manage?

And if we accept the logistical excuses aired here, can we please end Brexit so we’re only temporarily Fucked as opposed to it being like this permanently so. Brexit will be (for these types of industry) how it now, but worse, and forever.

How many ‘furriners’ do you think work for the NHS you get all emosh about on Thurs evenings? Or are you only cheering the white British ones? Honestly, Corona has really shown the true nature of this country and it’s a fucking embarrassment.

Hoping to be an economic migrant to Russia.

wanttoruntothemoon · 19/04/2020 20:18

But I guess if you're the kind of person who think all the unemployed are all lazy, good for nothing workshy fops who should be forced to work for their dole, then this is right up your street.

Well no, not all unemployed people are the way you describe them. Some have health issues some have disabilities. But the ones that are healthy young that are on benefits have no excuses. They are the pure lazy ones complaining that foreigners are stealing their jobs. They are the ones unreliable. If you are broke I'm sure you don't care about the repetitive hard work you need to do. I'm sure I wouldn't care. If I needed to feed my family and keep a roof over my head I would go and take any job I can.

FrustratedFrog · 19/04/2020 20:20

I've applied for numerous fruit picking jobs, am able to relocate and I haven't heard back from them 🤷‍♀️

Chillicheese123 · 19/04/2020 20:23

@Bunnyfuller why would you move to a country which denies thousands basic human rights and allows gay people to be literally murdered under state supervision ?

scaryreading · 19/04/2020 20:25

We were continually told that EU migrants weren't able to claim benefits or entitled to any

HeIenaDove · 19/04/2020 20:27

@Bunnyfuller Its not an excuse not to want to risk homelessness. Im a Remainer Im half Italian Sorry i dont fit in your box. I also live in social housing so do know a little teensy bit about the rules.

Tenants can NOT live away without risking eviction

peppermintcapsules · 19/04/2020 20:28

I know it can be back breaking work, but if you are young and fit why wouldn't you?

Did you bother to read the thread? Loads of reasons, chief among them that the farms often require the workers to live on site in usually appalling conditions and pay for it out (at rip off rates) out of their wages so you earn far less, even if you are fast and efficient - 6 to a shoddy caravan or portacabin, inadequate washing and cooking facilities. You're paid by how much you pick. Love how people with excuses as to why they cannot do it themselves are so quick to volunteer others for it.

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 19/04/2020 20:36

Oh fgs will some of you read the thread or at least the last few pages.

Plenty of youngsters are applying, and being told no. They’re the only people likely to be able to: young, no commitments, but able to live away and then have a home to go back to. The youngsters are statistically not the people who voted for Brexit, that’s the older generation.
I think East Europeans manage by having an economy that is not like ours, where money earned in a short period here will tide them over for a longer period there. Incidentally are they getting free transport here? That’s something our people don’t get in their own country. We pay through the nose for it.

angelfacecuti75 · 19/04/2020 20:49

Its probably quite hard physical work (I work in a warehouse and used to do admin jobs so in no way am I looking down on people) and apparently you've got to be quick if you want to make any money at all. So it won't be for everyone unfortunately.

angelfacecuti75 · 19/04/2020 20:51

And I expect its not £10 per hour its min wage and there are lots of strict rules and often impossible targets to meet....

glennamy · 19/04/2020 20:51

I have seen the rejection letters to UK applicants which were along the lines of you are not trained / it will take too long to train you! They got replies in the 10's of thousands from UK workers... The business owners didn't want to pay minimum wage, just £75 a week, cheaper to get foreign workers who can survive on this by living in caravans on-site. The business owners also get a kickback from the agencies abroad running the job ads. To sum it up it was a big con, they didn't want UK workers at all, eating into their vast profits and the money on offer from EU backed propaganda and subsidies... It backfired and they have been called out on it!

Ifeelsuchafool · 19/04/2020 21:00

My daughter applied to go fruit picking and was told, by Farming UK, that they had all the labour they needed for April and to wait a couple of weeks for the May jobs but she didn't want to wait so went to work for a garden centre being inundated with online orders as they're all shut to the public while everyone's at home wanting to do their gardens so... I get really annoyed with all these judgemental people saying nobody wants to get their hands dirty.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 19/04/2020 21:01

Some of the messages on here have actually made a decent case for Brexit and limiting immigration. As a passionate remainer it is very....galling. Immigration is all good, but it's absolutely not ok to overlook the native workforce in favour of people with no affiliations here, then accuse them of being feckless for expecting decent pay and working conditions and demonise them in the press for not being able to get past barriers of distance and accommodation due to complete unwillingness to invest, train and be flexible.

It's quite appalling and distasteful.

I am also interested in whether the flights are free.

BigBlueEyes19 · 19/04/2020 21:01

So... you want brexit and you want foreigners to do dirty jobs to feed your fat ass - you wont have it both ways. Either lazy british start working in farmin and food production or you will be starving from 2021! Count me in for moving to Russia too! Paka

Rosehip10 · 19/04/2020 21:37

"ThePrettyOneX" and "bigblueeyes19" are the same person - sock puppet heaven!

HebeMumsnet · 19/04/2020 21:57

Evening, everyone. Just dropping in to ask for a bit of peace and love. We don't want to take the whole thread down but if it turns into a bunfight we will have to. Thanks!

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 19/04/2020 22:06

Know what you mean Catherine I too am a remained and would be tomorrow, but I am also from the lower classes and what this country’s “leaders” have done to us/ them turns my stomach. Unchecked immigration is not the unqualified good they claim, and globalisation never has been; I don’t see that leaving the EU especially with no deal is a solution.

HebeMumsnet, I don’t see that taking the whole thread down for someone feeding in misinformation is a moderate response either.

Wannabangbang · 19/04/2020 22:22

I absolutely see why they've needed to outsource. What I'm not pleased about is that all these helpers have not been covid tested. Yes temperature checked their end but no test for covid. Why are we not atleast testing people flying in i don't get it!!

bemusedmoose · 19/04/2020 22:57

ive applied- £9-11 per hr manual labour. Havent heard back yet.

mylifestory · 19/04/2020 23:28

Fruit picking has been exempted from furlough so Brits can do it fyi!

Menopausalcraziness · 19/04/2020 23:48

I’ve called local farms who have told me they’re not yet In season for picking and no offers of contacting me when it is time!! Like me, there are people willing but just not getting any chances 🤷‍♀️

MadMadaMim · 20/04/2020 00:34

All the Tory voters and Brexiteers who wanted their country back - now that they have it, where are they?

Surely this is what they want. We have our country back. Now we need to take those jobs that those who were apparently taking it from us did. Like fruit picking.
