The old boy doing laps of his garden and raising millions for the NHS charities - great effort and to be applauded.

Michael Ball warbling his way through a cringeworthy version of You'll Never Walk Alone - not fine.

Please make it stop.

"I'm sure Michael Ball couldn't give a shit what a few miseries on Mumsnet think."

Yep, many on MN will savage anyone who dares try to do something good
Especially if they are rich
That's one thing both left and right here share

Fortunately for Captain Tom Moore, even the MN misery guts don't dare to openly criticise him

JovialNickname · 18/04/2020 12:55

Obviously I meant Never Walk Alone. Autocorrect massive fail!!

Bearbehind · 18/04/2020 13:11

Well it’s number 1 on iTunes so clearly many people disagree with you OP

WTF is wrong with people who just moan about anything others to do help

pussycatinboots · 18/04/2020 13:16

@fuckinghellthisshit
I agree. I thought it was really inappropriate to sing that song on the 16th, due to the anniversary of Hillsborough being the day before.
No respect shown.

Anyone can go out and bang their pans if they want, just choose another song.

fuckinghellthisshit · 18/04/2020 13:18

@Chillicheese123 I lived in Liverpool for years and know the history of the song and it's various releases - it is closely tied to football and was released after the Bradford football fire. Celtic have used it for as long as Liverpool I think. But when you've heard it sung by the fan, for the victims and their families, it really is a breathtaking show of solidarity and emotion. I was an away fan and it still gives me goosebumps to remember.
I just watched it again and wept

fuckinghellthisshit · 18/04/2020 13:19

I think what Captain Tom Moore has done is incredible btw, an outstanding inspiration.

TSSDNCOP · 18/04/2020 13:24

And yet, whenever I hear YNWA I think of the Hillsborough victims, so you could also argue it actually, keeps their memory alive.

In this particular context, I'm sure I saw an interview with Captain Moore in the week that mentioned MB had thrown his support in and the Captain was thrilled.

He seems to be a particularly astute man who, whilst overwhelmed by the response, can see the benefit of riding the wave of popularity whilst it lasts. He's 100 in 12 days; the NHS charities should get another massive boost before then.

Excited101 · 18/04/2020 13:25

I’m finding the huge outpouring of emotion during this time to be utterly nauseating. I really wish I didn’t, I wish I too could join in with poems, and heartfelt pleas to my friend and family etc etc. But I don’t, I find it awkward and embarrassing.

PineappleDanish · 18/04/2020 13:26

Nobody's criticising the efforts of a very elderly man to do his bit. Good on him.

What I'm criticising is the 45 minutes a day of news devoted to saying the same things about him over and over, everyone clamouring to get in on the action and then Michael Ball deciding in his wisdom to release the cheesiest, naffest version of the song which ever existed. It's not uplifting. It's just a total cringe from start to finish.

I know we're all locked inside and the telly are desperately trying to find news which isn't all doom and gloom. But this really is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

You can quite easily donate to the NHS charities direct without buying the single.

And people did to the tune of £17 million before it was released. The way people are trying to suck what little joy the world holds out of it is making me really angry. Donate or don’t but why criticise every single thing and drag everyone down? Good thing there wasn’t this level of bitching around Live Aid.

PineappleDanish · 18/04/2020 13:38

suck what little joy the world holds

Come on. The world holds a lot of joy. Lots of amazing things to see, do and experience.

Michael Ball sitting in his spare room murdering a song over Zoom isn't one of them.

I was a lot more joyous without hearing michael ball murdering a song that’s been released 1800 times already. Especially when he does his fake crooner stage school face - look at the camera, look away, pause, slowly look back earnestly, raise an eyebrow and give a cheeky “I’m just a lad” smile.

No thanks 😷

If it raises money through does it even matter if you don't like it? Have you raised any money?

MargotB7 · 18/04/2020 13:48

Turn the TV over.

Frangipanini · 18/04/2020 13:48

Not sure how the other football clubs use it but because Gerry and the Pacemakers covered it (it's not their song) the Liverpool fans picked up on it many years ago. It was around way before Hillsborough. Think in later years it has become a token of solidarity and grief but that's not how I remember it. I was taken to watch Liverpool play as a child and whether they lost of won, they sang it, just with different emotions. Since this was the time around Kenny Dagleish and before Hillsborough my memories of it are more from singing it with joy at winning. I remember it as more of a way of thanking the team for winning and pride.

When I hear it in a non Liverpudlian context I am a bit Hmm as I think we think we own the rights to that song. Wrongly of course.

TSSDNCOP · 18/04/2020 13:48

Hold on though, did someone say that Cliff had been exhumed? Do his teeth fit better now?

randomer · 18/04/2020 13:50

@catwithkittens. You make some good points, I was at a very low ebb this morning.
tbh, I have not hear Tom speak but I'm sure he is a decent bloke.

It's just such a mish mash of strands. The media have jumped on this, in my opinion to divert from the full horror of what is unfolding. The NHS has been mismanaged for decades. What this man has put in is remarkable, but it should never, ever have come to this.
And there is a strange almost nostalgia for the past, Spitfires, fly pasts, Vera Lynn. I'm sorry but it doesn't sit well with me.

Alsohuman · 18/04/2020 13:55

It is for some people.

Abreadsandwich · 18/04/2020 14:06

I'm not a football fan but I always link YNWA to liverpool and commemorating Hillsborough.

YangShanPo · 18/04/2020 14:06

I think what people like about Capt Tom is that he isn't a cheesy celeb or politician so please don't turn him into one.

Aragog · 18/04/2020 14:49

he is a frail old man who needs to slow down and rest

That's for him to decide. Him and his family. Not all elderly people want to sit with their feet up. Some want to be active and mobile, and are more happy being occupied than just sat doing nothing.

My nana is in her early 90s and this lockdown has meant she can't be mobile in the same way and its really affecting her. She doesn't have a nice big garden to walk. But until this she was dancing every week and meeting friends. Now she can't - she's home alone and inactive. Not helping her at all in lots of ways, though keeping her safe from Covid obviously.

Captain Tom Moore has said that he had an operation and it was on medical advice that he needed to be mobile. That's why he was initially walking. His family's business (I think) decided to 'sponsor' him as a bit of incentive, and to donate to the NHS charities, and that's where it started.

Aragog · 18/04/2020 14:49

@TSSDNCOP Ha ha! Sorry ;)

Snugglepiggy · 18/04/2020 15:02

The song is by Rogers and Hammerstein from the musical Carousel. In the context of the show its about coming through tough times and facing adversity for someone who was bereaved.Only saying. Obviously now synonymous with Liverpool FC.
