The old boy doing laps of his garden and raising millions for the NHS charities - great effort and to be applauded.

Michael Ball warbling his way through a cringeworthy version of You'll Never Walk Alone - not fine.

Please make it stop.

Alsohuman · 18/04/2020 11:28

he is a frail old man who needs to slow down and rest

That’s the last thing he needs. This has given him a new lease of life. His daily exercise is achieving something positive and he’s inspired millions of people. I can’t wait for 30 April to see him turn 100.

YeOldeTrout · 18/04/2020 11:33

I don't mind Tom Moore etc. Everyone is trying to do what they think they can.

I do mind the "every death is a tragedy" message: er, no, they are not.

Some of these people were kiddy fiddlers or just garden variety sadists. Some aren't long out of prison for horrible crimes. Many were hanging onto life by a grim thread and the cv19 was a merciful release.

Everyone is an individual. There isn't one type of person who has passed.

viques · 18/04/2020 11:36

Well the Vera Lynn will go well since she cleverly bunged HM a handbag full of readies to do a bit of advertising for her. smart move V.

SouthWestmom · 18/04/2020 11:45

Agree with a pp saying some people are piggybacking Tom Moore's success.
Saw some stage school kid has managed to self publicise her insta account and called for birthdays cards and clapping for him 🙄
Also he's nearly 100 - when do the knight hoods come out? Is it not a bit premature?

However I can't be snarky about people individually doing lovely things - he has achieved so much, celebrities doing genuine free performances and entertainment is better than nothing surely?

Chillicheese123 · 18/04/2020 11:55

Oh don’t get me wrong I love what Tom Moore has done. Dd has even made him a birthday card she carefully slaved over. It’s the piggybacking as @Noeuf says that annoys me

Cam77 · 18/04/2020 12:00

I find the whole knighthood thing so archaic and ridiculous. Honestly massive well done to him for his charitable walking and well done to the tens of thousands of people who have donated their hard earned cash, but we have really become a silly nation dragged along by tabloid headlines.

BoswellsBollocks · 18/04/2020 12:07

My brother and I like to be the first to spot Beverley Knight popping up during a crisis. She’s the female Michael Ball.

Although I’ll be fair, she’s a much better singer than MB

randomer · 18/04/2020 12:11

How can people see one man and assume " a whole generation" share his outlook on life?

Think about this. If you see one young woman going on about nails or hair, does this tell you " a whole generation" are vacuous?

Absolute nonsense. People have lost what little critical facilities they had.

MangosteenSoda · 18/04/2020 12:18

First Captain Tom and now the lady climbing Everest up and down the stairs of her house. Both clearly wonderful people - but the NHS should not be funded by elderly people doing extreme exercise. It shouldn't be funded by anything other than taxation. Ever.

I wish all of that money was going to charities that rely on donations.

Villageidiots · 18/04/2020 12:19

Oh God. I've missed this. Thanks for the warning!

Mrsjayy · 18/04/2020 12:21

It is an NHS charity and the "extras" wouldn't be able to be funded by tax payers the lady climbing "everest" is nearly 90 good for her .

CatWithKittens · 18/04/2020 12:22

Randomer - I am not sure what conscription has to do with anything. Captain Moore, who as a civil engineer would have been in a reserved occupation, would not have been conscripted. Moreover he would have been too young at the outset of the war when only those over 20 were being registered. In other words he must have volunteered like so many others of his age. Of course that has nothing to do with this crisis except that somebody who wanted to serve his community at 19 still does so at 99, which most thinking people would agree is really rather wonderful. I appreciate that concepts of duty and service may be foreign to you and and sadly evoke in you and some others on MN only a need to belittle and mock. However whatever such people may say neither those concepts nor our our admiration for Captain Moore have anything at all to do with politics, right wing or otherwise.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/04/2020 12:23

It's only a matter of time before Piers Morgan and Dame Vera duet. perhaps Mary Berry,Cliff,an the odd person from Antiques Roadshow could do backing vocals

Don’t forget about Sir Paul McCartney and Emilie Sande who both seem to get wheeled out at any opportunity to show “best of British” but they really mean “best of British who would actually turn up cos Adele is too busy”

ShirleyPhallus · 18/04/2020 12:23

Also has anyone seen the absolute car crash that was Ben Fogle’s attempt to get the nation to sing happy birthday to the queen? Which was then widely panned on Twitter so he changed it to sing happy birthday to Tom instead.

Mrsjayy · 18/04/2020 12:25

There is a charity night on tv this Friday just to warn you all there might be more Michael Grin

OldPeculier · 18/04/2020 12:25

I love listening to MB’s radio show on a Sunday but the NHS isn’t bloody Live Aid. People need to realise that if money is having to be charitably raised to make the NHS work something has gone horrifically wrong.

We absolutely cannot let al this well intentioned goodwill become a propaganda smokescreen for why we’re in the awful mess.

1forsorrow · 18/04/2020 12:30

Also he's nearly 100 - when do the knight hoods come out? Is it not a bit premature? Queen's official birthday in June I think, Birthday Honours list. I assume knighthoods are one of the honours for her birthday so he hasn't got long to go.

Lockheart · 18/04/2020 12:30

@CatWithKittens I haven't seen anyone on this thread belitting or mocking what Tom has achieved.

I can, at the same time, think he is remarkable as well as being uncomfortable with the media frenzy surrounding it.

fuckinghellthisshit · 18/04/2020 12:34

This song, in my mind, belongs to the Hillsborough victims and their families horrendous struggle for justice. They fought for the truth for 25 years.

Chillicheese123 · 18/04/2020 12:35

@fuckinghellthisshit it was a song in its own right before then. It’s also used by many other football clubs

DippyAvocado · 18/04/2020 12:37

I think it's fine but wish the money was going to some of the charities out there who are absolutely desperate for money at the moment.

This. Taking nothing away from the fantastic effort by Captain Tom, but it's not just the NHS charities that need funding. The charity sector as a whole is facing a drop of millions in donations as understandably many people are worried about their finances at the moment. If people can afford to give, there are children's hospices that may face closure, homeless people still on the streets, children still starving in Yemen. Many charities and social enterprises face closure.

Abreadsandwich · 18/04/2020 12:45

Did you know musical theatre starMichael Ballhastwicethe amount ofbloodin his body as that of a normal man? Absolutely true. It's what allows him to belt out those big notes on stage.

I saw a dr (or someone medical) on tv that a person had roughly 1 pint of blood per stone of weight....
Sorry I realise this has nothing to do with anything!Blush

MargotB7 · 18/04/2020 12:47

Just don't listen to it. I'm sure Michael Ball couldn't give a shit what a few miseries on Mumsnet think.

JovialNickname · 18/04/2020 12:47

Michael Ball makes me feel itchy.

I applaud Tom for his stirling and inspiring effort and for raising so much money for the NHS. However if I'm forced to watch MB warbling his way through You'll Never Walk Again I think I might just cringe myself inside out. I can't even run out into the street to escape
