So basically the company is work for won’t be giving anyone a pay rise or bonus for this FY. I’m not sure why they decided to tell us in April but I Want to contact my union and asked for them to sort it out. AIBU for expecting my union not to fight for a pay rise?

More info and context probably needed here - has the company been very affected by recent events, for example?

Frankly, given no one in the public sector has received a meaningful payrise (outside of promotion) for a decade or so I personally struggle to sympathise. But I know things are different in private industry.

I work for a private sector company. They've said nothing formal but I'm fully expecting no pay rise for anyone this year. Those at the top have already had a 20 percent cut. There's going to be a huge downturn and mass unemployment, so why would you expect a payrise?

Mia1415 · 17/04/2020 16:33

In the current climate I'd be amazed if any companies were giving pay rises or bonuses. A lot of companies are worried about their survival and keeping cash flow going.

WalesStar · 17/04/2020 16:34

YABU.

Brooksey5 · 17/04/2020 16:34

I was meant to get a pay rise instead we all got a pay cut 😂 I missed out on the last set of pay rises aswell because I was on probation. So yes I am very definitely hoping for a pay rise!

Brooksey5 · 17/04/2020 16:35

Not for the new financial year though maybe around Christmas?

Eeyoresstickhouse · 17/04/2020 16:35

Be grateful you may still have a job this financial year yet alone a pay rise. I'm sure one of the millions of people who have suddenly become unemployed may be willing to do your job for the same money you are on now and be grateful!

edwinbear · 17/04/2020 16:38

YABVVU. I'm in the private sector and not had a pay rise in over 10 years, not even a cost of living increase. If you take into account inflation and how my annual bonuses have fallen, I've had a pay cut every year. You should consider yourself fortunate if you have a job by the end of the year - I certainly will be.

Spam88 · 17/04/2020 16:40

Eh? I'm public sector so not au fait with how the private sector works, but would a union really be interested in employees not getting a pay rise for one year? Even without everything that's currently going on.

quietheart · 17/04/2020 16:40

My DH has just been told that he is being furloughed and the maximum is £2500 a month and no pay rise for 20/21 and no bonus for 19/20. It was a triple whammy.

MissMuddyPuddles · 17/04/2020 16:43

Weve been told no pay rises or bonuses this year. Everyone is happy with that if it means they keep their job 🤷‍♀️
I think given recent events it's hardly surprising.

Burnbabyburn1 · 17/04/2020 16:45

I work in the private sector for a company that hasn’t been performing well for a number of years. They have a few business under the umbrella of a well known brand.

Last year we got 2% and the union wanted us to settle on 1%. I expect my union to email all the members straight away saying They will fight for a pay rise. The lack of communication is appalling. They should be emailing us straight away pushing for a review of the decision.

DH is private sector and thankfully got his bonus in his March pay packet and pay increase backdated to January, and hasn’t been furloughed so we are exceptionally lucky up to now.

His team are already asking him about next years bonus and he’s just been honest and said he doesn’t know at the moment, nobody does.

Mia1415 · 17/04/2020 16:51

OP - which would you prefer.

A. No pay rise or bonus
B. A pay rise and bonus - but many people made redundant or worse still the company having to close i.e. no job

This is the reality for most businesses at the moment. Your union will absolutely understand this. I'm sure they have had conversations at a high level with your company.

The union wants to protect jobs. They are not going to fight for a pay rise if it may lead to redundancies.

I've had to take a pay cut of 20% and am not having my bonus. I'm OK with this as I want to keep my job and try and protect the business and my colleagues jobs.

Marnie76 · 17/04/2020 16:51

If they haven’t been performing well already, then you should probably be hoping they won’t go bust. Hoping for a payrise no matter how much you deserve one sounds unrealistic. They can’t pay you what they haven’t got.

notalwaysalondoner · 17/04/2020 16:54

I work in the private sector in professional services in a company that works with all sectors so should come through this relatively OK, and I still think YBVVU unless you know for a fact your company is doing better than average this year despite the crisis and will continue to do so for the whole year (literally the only example I can think of for this is some companies in the tech sector like zoom or logistics delivery companies). Everyone else in all other sectors will be struggling to a greater or lesser extent, so the direct result of a pay rise will be other people being made redundant. For now you should accept that companies are doing what they need to do to survive and keep your fingers crossed you have a job at all come year end....

bottlenose301 · 17/04/2020 16:54

I was going to fight for a pay rise this year too for many reasons. However now, I'm just grateful to still be employed and hope the company can get through what's to come.

HandfulOfFlowers · 17/04/2020 16:55

If the company you work for isn't performing well, go and work for one that is performing better, assuming you could find one at the moment

Jeezoh · 17/04/2020 16:56

Why would you expect a pay rise from a firm who you’ve stated haven’t been performing well for a few years? Where do you think they will magic the money from?

Figgygal · 17/04/2020 16:56

I had a 3% rise in March
A 10% pay cut in April

But it’s necessary to maintain business viability and protect jobs so what can you do Confused

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 17/04/2020 16:58

I was due a £10,000 annual pay rise in March, instead I got a 20% pay cut and still working full time hours from home.

Are you completely oblivious to what is currently happening with the economy?

ElbasAbsentPenis · 17/04/2020 17:03

This is clearly a wind-up or a reverse

daisypond · 17/04/2020 17:03

I’m in the private sector but there is a union. It struggles to get staff even a cost of living increase each year. We usually don’t even get that. We definitely won’t this year.

DianaT1969 · 17/04/2020 17:05

OP - I think you should organise a strike. It's completely unfair not to get a pay rise. You'll walk into another job tomorrow. 👍👍
