To think that a personality cult has developed around Boris Johnson?

I know this sounds completley ridiculous but have a quick look around social media and in particular Twitter, and you will see a disturbing number of people with lots of union flags in their twitter handle name who effectively think that the sun shines out of his arse, that he can do no wrong and that any justifiable criticism of his or his governments handling of the current crisis is part of a massive 'leftie' conspiracy against him.

They are terrified of 'lefties's and 'liberals' and think all of the media are out to get Boris and his government, it is just bat shit. Its not just Twitter either, I had to unfriend someone on Facebook after they told me that I should 'show Boris some fucking respect' a few weeks ago. This was after I'd shared something criticising his handling of the pandemic. Thankfully it was somone I don't really know that well and never have to see again, but still!

If im honest it all a bit disturbing. Its reminscent of a personality cult IMO, 'how dare you disrespect our glorious leader'.

Looking forward to Johnson with his Churchill spirit coming back soon?

I wonder if people know about his role in the Dardanelle campaign?

user1471565182 · 24/04/2020 20:03

Why are you wittering on about Joe fucking Biden?

Have you been injecting bleach?

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 20:42

It seems like Boris' fans have stopped posting on here.

Shame

Just heard the EU have a financial packaging sorted, member states can expect it in Jan 2021.
Wonder if that is because they hope it means they can continue doing nothing towards ends this crisis.
They said PPE would arrive two weeks ago for members, but nothing has arrived.

jasjas1973 · 25/04/2020 08:49

Germany has been sending PPE to other countries but the shortages of PPE are not as severe as here in the UK.

What do you think about the new immigration being dropped? Johnson getting the love for immigrants!

jasjas1973 · 25/04/2020 08:49

immigration bill

@mummmy2017

What do you think of Churchill now? - seeing as we were talking about the article that you praised about Churchill facing criticism during the war?

Did you know about what he did during the inter war years?

Alsohuman · 25/04/2020 10:08

Just heard the EU have a financial packaging sorted, member states can expect it in Jan 2021

Shame we won’t benefit from it after 40 odd years of paying in.

mummmy2017 · 25/04/2020 11:21

Churchill was loved by this country, his funeral shows just how much the country cared.
In times of need people need a figure to back and he did that for England, he managed to talk up the moral of the country and win the war.
Of course it is always possible with hindsight to talk down his efforts, but if you talked to the people who were there, who lived through it , they will say how great he was.

chomalungma · 25/04/2020 11:28

Of course it is always possible with hindsight to talk down his efforts

The thing is - and you may not have realised this:

People have been complaining because the Government has been criticised by journalists for their lack of preparedness.

Did you realise that Churchill himself critcised the Government in the inter war years because of their lack of preparedness for what was coming from Germany? He wrote damning articles in the papers and got sent 'into the wilderness'.

He was proved right about what was going on - and the Government fell.

So it's quite amusing for you to reference an article about Churchill to deflect from people criticising the Government about their lack of preparedness - when he did exactly the same thing.

DecadentDeity · 25/04/2020 11:37

mummmy2017 · 25/04/2020 11:58

England used to mean everyone, shame we are all so divided now.

Do feel free to cite any current politicians who mounted a persistent campaign for pandemic preparedness over the course of the last decade rather than just whining about it now as if they had had any more foresight than anyone else...

Oh hello..you're back. We missed you

A completely irrelevant point

The point is - as I am sure most people can see - is that people have been complaining about the Government being criticised and then Churchill was brought up as an example - who also criticised the Government

Mind you - if you want an example of a politician criticising the Government - look at what Rory Stewart was saying.

Alsohuman · 25/04/2020 12:31

Didn’t 21 MPs, including Churchill’s grandson, have the whip removed for criticising the government?

chomalungma · 25/04/2020 12:35

I think some people think that the Government can't be criticised and that the Government is doing everything right.

I wouldn't like to live in a place where people think a Government is always getting everything right and is above criticism.

DecadentDeity · 25/04/2020 12:41

England used to mean everyone, shame we are all so divided now.
@mummmy2017 Your kind of attitude certainly doesn't help. England is not the same as the UK - maybe you could just use the correct term - it matters!

Peregrina · 25/04/2020 13:02

Churchill was loved by this country, his funeral shows just how much the country cared.

Churchill was voted out with a landslide. Which shows how much they cared. As for his funeral - I was alive at the time. I can't say I cared all that much, but obviously he had been an important figure in British history. Ditto, Maggie Thatcher had a state funeral - it didn't alter the fact that half the country detested her.

England used to mean everyone, shame we are all so divided now.
England has never meant everyone! Have you not paused to ask why the Scots might want independence? Or why the Irish fought for Independence a century ago?

I think some people think that the Government can't be criticised and that the Government is doing everything right.
They would not be holding back if we had a Labour Government in power.

Applejaxx · 25/04/2020 13:09

Churchill was so well loved that the general public voted him out at the first opportunity and Labour got in with a landslide.

Fact is he was a great wartime leader but a terrible peacetime one.

mummmy2017 · 25/04/2020 13:14

People say when Germany tried to invade England.
So do they mean England as in UK.
Or just England minus every other bit.
Wondering how many Scots want independence right now.

Peregrina · 25/04/2020 13:16

I believe that the Labour landslide did take the upper classes by surprise. What with Attlee having 'a lot to be modest about' and all that!

Churchill being voted out sums it up - some PMs are right for the time, others not. Chamberlain might have been fine in a time of international stability but was the wrong person for the war years.

Peregrina · 25/04/2020 13:25

mummmy - have you not heard of the saying, "When in a hole stop digging? If you don't know how offensive your statements about England and the UK being synonymous are, then might I suggest you have a few history lessons? Start with N Ireland - which is not even Great Britain, in case you don't know.

DecadentDeity · 25/04/2020 13:31

@mummmy2017 It's simple really. Use England when you mean England and use the UK when you mean the UK. And the same applies to other people as well.

Applejaxx · 25/04/2020 13:31

I don’t like in England Mummy. It might come as a surprise but there are four other counties within the UK.

Fucking loads, I imagine. They’ve got sensible politicians.
