To think Piers Morgan has a point?

Personally not a fan of Piers Morgan and his interview style annoys me with the constant interruptions. However when questioning the health secretary I did think he had a point about taking a pay cut. Matt Hancock was quite quick when asked to suggest that footballers should take a pay cut but isn’t willing to do the same himself. My husband and I disagree but wondered what others thought. AIBU to think the Matt Hancock is being hypocritical by suggesting others should be taking a pay cut but not being willing to take one himself?

Footballers aren't actually working at the moment though. MPs are.

TeenPlusTwenties · 16/04/2020 09:00

Surely Matt Hancock will be working harder now than ever before, so if anything he should get a pay rise? Smile

Bringer · 16/04/2020 09:01

You know who should take a pay cut?

Piers fucking Moron.

Butterymuffin · 16/04/2020 09:01

It's a fair question to ask. Plus footballers got picked on but hedge fund managers didn't, as other people have pointed out. Maybe Morgan should have asked Hancock what he thinks about colleagues of his like Rees Mogg making money out of all this.

Heygirlheyboy · 16/04/2020 09:01

I agree that politicians should take a cut but I expect they'll over a legal/comstitutional reason why it's not suitable Hmm

Butterymuffin · 16/04/2020 09:03

@TeenPlusTwenties Ok, but then presumably all front line workers will be due a pay rise too?

derxa · 16/04/2020 09:06

You might not like Matt Hancock but he's in charge at the moment. Can you imagine the pressure he's under.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 16/04/2020 09:07

YABU- mps earn in year what most footballers earn in a week!

The other poster is right about hedge fund managers etc though.

opticaldelusion · 16/04/2020 09:07

How much of a pay cut has Piss Moron taken?

LizzieSiddal · 16/04/2020 09:07

Some Footballers earn more in a week than MH earns in a year.

YABVU

And I can’t stand the bloke.

bookworm14 · 16/04/2020 09:09

Top level footballers are on a hundred grand a week. Matt Hancock will be on less than that a year, probably. Also, why should he take a pay cut when he’s having to work harder than he ever has before? I’m not a Tory voter but it’s simply not fair to compare a politician to a footballer.

opticaldelusion · 16/04/2020 09:10

And why pick on MPs? Leaving the expenses scandal aside, their basic salary is shit. That's why we get toffs and career politicians like the frigging Eton boy Tories. They're buoyed by their private wealth. I wouldn't be an MP for seventy odd grand when people in the financial industry earn millions upon millions.

OuterMongolia · 16/04/2020 09:10

Footballers aren't working at the moment. I imagine Matt Hancock is working very long hours.

Tattiebee · 16/04/2020 09:10

Er, no. Footballers aren't doing anything at the mkmeby, MPs are working harder than ever, so no, why on earth should they?

Tattiebee · 16/04/2020 09:10

Moment*

User7764217 · 16/04/2020 09:11

He is probably working harder than he usually does.

As am I, but my company has given me a pay cut 🙄🤷‍♀️

dollybird · 16/04/2020 09:13

Pay cuts to big earners means less tax being paid. Perhaps footballers etc could offer to help in some other way out of their net earnings?

RishiSunakFanClub · 16/04/2020 09:13

How much of a pay cut will you be taking yourself, OP?

MsTSwift · 16/04/2020 09:14

Ridiculous.
MPs don’t earn that much
They are working extremely hard and having to take hideous decisions

Comparing mps to footballers makes you look uneducated and abit thick

CendrillonSings · 16/04/2020 09:15

The Health Secretary should take a pay cut while working flat out during a pandemic, in the course of which he has already caught and survived the disease?!

Complete, utter, batshit insanity.

TeenPlusTwenties · 16/04/2020 09:16

The issue with footballers was down to some clubs furloughing lower paid staff (so getting the government to pay their salaries) whilst continuing to pay footballers full pay. Not in the spirit of things at all.

Hedge fund managers can continue to work from home I would think.

Soontobe60 · 16/04/2020 09:19

MPs earn £81k a year.
The average salary of a premier league footballer is £3m a year, with 67 footballers earning ove £5m and 11 earning over £10m

MPs are still working. Footballers are not.

A 10% drop in salary for an MP is £8100, taking their salary down to £72900
A 10% drop in salary for an average premier league footballer is £300 000 taking taking their salary down to £2 700 000.
If the highest paid footballer, David de Gea, gave up 10% of his salary as he isn't working, that would equate to his take home pay dropping to just over £17.5 million. I'm pretty sure he could manage on that.

OwlinaTree · 16/04/2020 09:19

I don't think people who are working full time should be having a pay cut. He's working harder than ever, as are many public sector workers.

Bluebellpainting · 16/04/2020 09:20

Maybe I haven’t worded this very well. I don’t think he should take a pay cut but I think it is hypocritical to suggest others should without being willing to do so himself. Yes the levels of money are different and footballers aren’t playing at the moment but they are still having to train. I think they are way over paid for what they do but that is a separate issue. A lot of us are having to work harder than ever for the same or less money. My whole family are key workers and are either working harder/longer for the same or less money.

No, it really isn’t when it comes to footballers. How utterly ridiculous.
