To think Piers Morgan has a point?

Personally not a fan of Piers Morgan and his interview style annoys me with the constant interruptions. However when questioning the health secretary I did think he had a point about taking a pay cut. Matt Hancock was quite quick when asked to suggest that footballers should take a pay cut but isn’t willing to do the same himself. My husband and I disagree but wondered what others thought. AIBU to think the Matt Hancock is being hypocritical by suggesting others should be taking a pay cut but not being willing to take one himself?

Also, footballers are obviously still working as most of their work is training. It’s not just the 90 minutes on the park.

eaglejulesk · 16/04/2020 10:01

The PM and other government ministers in NZ have taken a pay cut for six months.

Leflic · 16/04/2020 10:01

My understanding with regards to Matt Hancock's request to footballers was based on the fact that the clubs tried to furlough all of their non playing staff (backroom team) with no impact on the "stars". This was an absolute PR catastrophe as well as completely unethical. Had the footballers taken a minor pay cut this could have covered the backroom staff wages and they would'nt have needed government money "furlough" to pay the back room team.

Yes. Why should the taxpayers cover the cost when the industry itself is more than capable of it ( with next to no hardship).

RandomlyChosenName · 16/04/2020 10:02

The thing about Premiership footballers taking is a pay cut is that some clubs were asking the taxpayer (you and me) to pay 80% of their backroom staff wages whilst paying the footballers their entire salary. Instead, the players could have taken a pay cut and covered the backroom staff wages themselves. Or in other words, they wanted to use our money to keep the footballers their huge incomes whilst they aren’t even working.

Matt Hancock is literally making decisions that save or cost lives. There is no logical reason for him to take a pay cut at this point. He is also paid by taxes.

There is no comparison.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 16/04/2020 10:02

What happened to my paragraph where I moaned about Matt Hancock between 'but' and 'Piers'? Stoopid phone Hmm

Bringer · 16/04/2020 10:02

footballers aren’t playing at the moment but they are still having to train.

Diddums.

Hopefully this will be the death of football. It's a blight on society.

derxa · 16/04/2020 10:03

Also, footballers are obviously still working as most of their work is training. It’s not just the 90 minutes on the park. Oh give over. They can't train as normal at the moment

fivesecondrule · 16/04/2020 10:03

MH didn't just randomly come out with "footballers need to take a paycut". He said it in the context that when big wealthy clubs like Tottenham said they would be claiming furlough for their back room staff, the clubs should consider reducing player wages, which were still getting paid in full, first. There was already a LOT of negativity from the public about them doing it its been a PR disaster for clubs and players really. If he'd have said "well the clubs are entitled to claim and if they still want to pay their players £70k a week, well that's their decision" there'd have been more uproar from the public.

Piers Morgan was BU- MH is really working quite an unenviable position at he moment. PM should use his opportunity to question Hancock on issues that really concern the general public- not just point score in the world of football (he's a fan).

1forsorrow · 16/04/2020 10:06

Piers Morgan's attention-seeking rantings have a whiff of 'I saw Goody Salah having a huge bank account'. It wasn't Piers Morgan who suggested footballers should take a pay cut, that was Matt Hancock. Piers Morgan was asking Matt Hancock if he was also going to take a pay cut if he thought it was such a good idea.

Mysterian · 16/04/2020 10:06

Do people think footballers are sitting on the sofa right now watching Netflix? They're spending hours every day keeping fit in readiness for the season restarting.

eaglejulesk · 16/04/2020 10:06

Whoops - should have read the thread and I would have seen the NZ govt pay cuts were already mentioned! The Director General of Health has also taken a cut.

Icantstopeatinglol · 16/04/2020 10:07

It’s a completely different situation. I agree with Piers sometimes but this doesn’t compare. It was the fact the people working for some of the clubs were furloughed therefore taking a 20% pay cut. The footballers aren’t working but they hadn’t lost money, that was the point. I would not want to be in Matt Hancocks position at the minute or any of the top MPs to be honest. They are still working and probably through one of the most stressful times of their career so no I don’t think they should take a pay cut. Makes no sense at all.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/04/2020 10:07

Why on earth should he take a pay cut? He's probably doing more work than the last 6 Health Secretaries put together!

Deathraystare · 16/04/2020 10:07

I was uncomfortable when he was interviewing a woman this week - is she something to do with health? I cannot remember. He accused her of laughing. She wasn't laughing about people's predicaments, it was more a "Oh for fucks sake let me answer" as he steamrolled over her. He wanted to know how many NHS workers had died because The Daily Fail said this and the Mirror said that (As if we should believe newspapers!) . Even if you do not agree with what she said - he was so up himself, imagining himself as a 'Paxman'. Unpleasant sod.

RandomlyChosenName · 16/04/2020 10:07

To simplify the point:

Football clubs can pay whoever they want however much they want when they are paying it from their own money.

But I refuse to subsidise Harry Kane’s lifestyle through my taxes.

MotherOfDragonite · 16/04/2020 10:08

I don't think MPs should take a pay cut. It is not a ridiculously high wage and they are still working hard for us.

Mysterian · 16/04/2020 10:08

They can't train as normal at the moment - No, but their clubs have given them all tailor made training programmes and diets.

boylovesmeerkats · 16/04/2020 10:08

While we're all arguing about this isn't Jeff Bezos 24 billion pounds richer. Maybe we should stop buying stuff from Amazon? If we value people being paid properly and treated well doesn't this make sense?

derxa · 16/04/2020 10:08

They're spending hours every day keeping fit in readiness for the season restarting. A lot of people keep fit but they don't get paid for it.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/04/2020 10:09

Who really cares about footballers anyway? It's about time they took a pay cut, and also stop the endless preening on foreign beaches with a string of girlfriends and numerous kids.

Doggybiccys · 16/04/2020 10:09

@NeverMindtheBotox - Footballers, like everyone else - under or over paid - pay the requisite amount of tax based on their earnings, and this is contributed to society's pot. Many of them also donate willingly to causes that they choose.

Most of the top earners do not pay tax like us mere mortals. They set themselves up with IRCs (image rights contracts) which means they don’t pay personal income tax but rather corporation tax (45% compared with 19%). Charitable donations also a form
of tax avoidance. HMRC are clamping down thankfully but like the majority of the very wealthy, top earners pay people to ensure they don’t contribute fairly to the tax pot.

I do however agree that comparing MPs to footballers is pointless. In a capitalist economy/free market, people are commodities and are worth what others are prepared to pay “for them”. There’s only one wayne Rooney (thank god!!) and people are prepared to pay a small fortune to follow a team/players whereas anyone can be taught to stack shelves (excluding significant mental orc physical impairment) hence the difference in value.

Football is big business and sadly the wealthy clubs are not prepared to take any hit unless forced to.

Mascotte · 16/04/2020 10:10

@derxa that’s a ridiculous comment

GreyGardens88 · 16/04/2020 10:10

Piss Moron is a bully, idiot I don't believe anything that comes out of his gob, he should be removed from tv

Hingeandbracket · 16/04/2020 10:12

I don’t think he should take a pay cut but I think it is hypocritical to suggest others should without being willing to do so himself.
No it isn't - unless you are doing the exact same job with the exact same pay.

Lynda07 · 16/04/2020 10:13

I don't think MPs receive a huge salary.
