To go to the car wash?

I will go and do my once weekly shop in sainsburys on Saturday - there is a car wash at the petrol station there. AIBU to use it after I've got the petrol?

Is it essential that your car is washed? Probably not really, is it?

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 15/04/2020 16:52

I'd say if it's open and you're going out anyway it would be fine. What harm could it actually do?

LittleBearPad · 15/04/2020 16:56

You’re going into pay for petrol anyway so it’s fine. This is MN though so you will likely be told it’s completely unnecessary

DartmoorChef · 15/04/2020 16:57

Most are closed.

Andpiglettoo · 15/04/2020 16:58

Yes it is essential - dirty windscreens, windows, mirrors and lights can reduce visibility.

Dollygirl2008 · 15/04/2020 17:07

I absolutely wouldn't make a special journey but I am going to do a grocery shop and get petrol anyway. I did check and it's still open. The car is only four weeks old and white and it's managed to get absolutely filthy just sat outside! I've only been out in if three times!

Plus I was too tight to pay extra for the paintwork to have the protection, so I will need to keep this one clean...Confused

It is not essential - the essential bit of a car wash can easily be done with a bucket of hot water and a cloth, even if you haven’t got the space or equipment to do a full car wash yourself - which is better for the environment, better for your car and exercise for you.

inwood · 15/04/2020 17:10

Go to the car wash assuming you mean an automated one and not a hand one. If it's open you can use it.

CoronaIsComing · 15/04/2020 17:28

I wouldn’t take a brand new car to an automatic car wash anyway 😵

LaureBerthaud · 15/04/2020 17:34

In the spirit of the MN lockdown stasi:
Do you actually need a car? Cycling would be much better exercise.
Do you really need those groceries? Check your cupboards for old tins and packets (ignore expiry dates) and knock up a delicious meal of tinned pineapple chunks mixed with a cuppa soup and some Uncle Ben's rice.

Dollygirl2008 · 15/04/2020 17:35

Yes it's an automatic one - I think the hand wash ones are all closed now

Why wouldn't you take a new car to an automated one - because of scratches etc? Hadn't thought of that...

I'm not opposed to doing it myself but I literally don't have bucket, big sponge or car shampoo and I can't justify going out to buy all of that - that's definitely not essential!

You can probably pick all of that up in the supermarket if you'd prefer to wash it yourself.

SpudsAreLife84 · 15/04/2020 17:39

Jesus, lockdown aside never take a car in an automated car wash if you value your paintwork and windscreen Shock

Order a Kercher car washing thingy on Amazon and do it yourself much better Smile

bridgetreilly · 15/04/2020 17:40

It's fine. You're not making a special journey, you're not increasing human contact, there's no reason not to do this.

RandomLondoner · 15/04/2020 17:42

Is it essential that your car is washed?

Why does it matter if it's essential? She's not making a journey to do it if she's already there.

wouldyouadamandeveit · 15/04/2020 17:42

You'll have to take it to a car wash, Dr Hillary Jones said this morning that you mustn't wash your car on the drive Grin

Deux · 15/04/2020 17:43

Of course it’s fine.

elf1985 · 15/04/2020 17:44

I work in a supermarket petrol station, do it. Just use the payment at the machine if you can.

RandomLondoner · 15/04/2020 17:46

Also, there "essential" has no objective meaning. It's completely a matter of opinion.

A car wash is essential, to you, if you think it is. Although it's important to realise that it's the opinion of the people with the power to fine you, rather than your own, that matters.

Chesterfuckingdrorrs · 15/04/2020 17:48

I wouldn't use an automatic car wash on any car let alone a brand new one.

They can cause so much damage, I learned the hard way after a car wash ripped off my spoiler 🤦🏻‍♀️

Definitely pick up the necessary bits when you go shopping and do it yourself.

runningwoman1980s · 15/04/2020 17:49

I washed my car today whilst it was sunny. Was quite enjoyable listening to music with earphones on I add lol.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 15/04/2020 17:49

I wouldn’t take a new car through an automated car wash anyway - pick up a sponge, bucket and shampoo in the supermarket while you’re there!

Dollygirl2008 · 15/04/2020 17:51

Yes I saw that wouldyouadamandeveit! I thought that was strange!

Oooh now you've all got me thinking about potential damage to "Gary" (don't ask - surely you all name your cars?!)

Looks like I'm going down the bucket and sponge route.....Grin

OP posts:
fourpeasinapod · 15/04/2020 17:57

Tbh if you’re already out for an essential thing and right beside one as you say then I see no reason why you couldn’t.

It would be unreasonable if you went out specifically to get the car washed.

I understand that the windscreen needs to be kept clean so you can see out as obscured vision through dirty windows is highly dangerous

CoronaIsComing · 15/04/2020 18:19

Yes because of the risk of damage. We’ve only recently been able to have brand new cars and we picked mine up on 1st March so I had 3(?) weeks of driving it then it’s sat on the drive looking pretty except for a weekly trip to the supermarket 😂 you should see the amount of cloths, sprays and polishes DH has bought for it!
