cultkid · 15/04/2020 10:38

I can hardly open my mouth 😭 my throat hurts SO much and I have a temperature of 39 at least 3/4 of the day never dropping under 38.5

Please someone help me. The nurse is calling me soon. I can hardly talk. I've been taking co codamol 8/500 and ibuprofen
What can I do for the pain
Have you been prescribed something that helped before
I haven't had a sore throat since I was 16

You can still get a form of tonsillitis without having tonsils. I'm surprised they prescribed you antibiotics based on a telephone call given that bacterial tonsillitis is much less common than viral.

To me you sound like you have quinsy rather than tonsillitis. Then again I'm not a doctor, nor is anyone else here I don't think, so you should probably call your GP back or call 111 and get more accurate advice.

LilacTree1 · 16/04/2020 15:51

Okay, so it’s blade cutting tonsil pain? Or more when you swallow?

I can only suggest codeine, tyrozets but Cloraseptic is much better.

Last time I had this, I needed really strong antibiotics.

cultkid · 16/04/2020 15:53

I'm calling 111 now

www.nhs.uk/conditions/tonsillitis/ has some red flags at the bottom regards quincy.

Irritatingly even bacterial tonsillitis doesn't respond much to antibiotics and generally takes a similar time to recover with or without, typically most are well into recovery on day 7.

Dont worry about the degree of your temperature, it doesn't correlate to the severity of the illness it's your bodies response to help it fight the infection!

If you have Quincy red flags then you'll need to be seen by doctor and they often manage it through hospital. Paramedics aren't allowed to do oral examinations currently, or carry any medications for Quincy or tonsillitis so if 111 do their normal special of sending an ambulance to check you out I'm not sure they'll be any more benefit to you then asking you the Quincy questions on NHS page.

The nurse and gp you've been speaking to regards your infection would be exactly the right professionals to be speaking with through regards your symptoms. Hopefully as you're on day 3/4 you're through the worst of it!

cultkid · 16/04/2020 16:29

@HamsterHolder I feel worse then I did I can't believe this pain
It's so hard to talk at any reasonable volume
I recall tonsillitis being so painful but this is in a league I can't remember
I'm so upset about it as it's a terrible time to have to go to a DR surgery
I have spoken to 111 and they said someone is going to call me back in 12 hours so I'm hoping they can help me out

It sounds like when I had strep throat - I was on antibiotics for 10 days, couldn't eat or sleep or swallow. Was horrendous. The antibiotics kicked in on about day 3 for me and I slowly started to feel better.

HamsterHolder · 16/04/2020 16:45

That sounds horrific!

It sounds like they've put a request in for a gp to call you about your symptoms so hopefully they'll have something up their sleeve! In the mean time:salt water gargle, avoid hot drinks, alternate paracetamol/ibuprofen if your able to take both.

cultkid · 16/04/2020 16:46

@Whattodo121 that is really reassuring because I can't remember it taking this long before
I have just tried some di hidrocodiene to see if it helps

Did you have a head ache as well
I always boast about never getting sick apart from my back issues

What a crazy time to get sick especially as I haven't been out for a month

I just remember feeling really really really poorly - I can't remember specific other symptoms! It came on very suddenly, I remember at dinner time on the Saturday that my throat was a bit tickly. The next day I went to a friend's for their birthday lunch at their house and I had to leave early as I just felt so unbelievably unwell really suddenly. Then the sore throat hit and that was that for about a week.

suggsy · 16/04/2020 16:58

Whenever I get tonsillitis I take liquid paracetamol or calpol (with a syringe) as I find it numbs my throat and you can squirt it on directly, I also used to get frappincinos/crush ice type drinks at uni when i got strep throat and it got really bad and I had to sit through a lecture as I found normal painkillers didn't target the pain enough. Obviously we can't pop out to Starbucks at the moment but you could try making a homemade version - I found a combination of the two a godsend. Strep was definitely WAY worse for me than tonsilitis. Hope you are feeling better soon Smile

Wattagoose90 · 16/04/2020 16:58

Not a doctor, but speaking from experience, could it be glandular fever?

I couldn't talk or eat when I had that. Horrific pain.

crankyhousewife · 16/04/2020 16:58

I always find paracetamol a better painkiller than ibuprofen for a sore throat. I wouldn't gargle with it as it tastes disgusting but taken normally it should ease it.

LadyRoughDiamond · 16/04/2020 17:08

I had similar about a month ago OP. Antibiotics worked (doctors are giving them out more readily over the phone at the mo) but a few days later a cough developed. Was completely wiped out afterwards for days. Am wondering if it was CV as it was so unlike anything else I've had. Apparently one way it can present is as a throat infection. Take care.

user1498572889 · 16/04/2020 17:10

My daughter had exactly the same symptoms about 6 weeks ago she also does not have tonsils. Just as the pain was going all of the glands in her neck swelled up hugely. The doctor just gave her antibiotics but said don’t be surprised if they don’t work if you had tonsils you would have had a very bad bout of tonsillitis. It went away after about a week but her glands kept coming up for another couple of weeks. Her step kids and partner also got it but in them it was tonsillitis. I have wondered lately if she had covid-19.

DysonFury · 16/04/2020 17:44

Ultra Chloraseptic spray is the nuts. Flowers

twilightermummy · 16/04/2020 17:49

I regularly suffer with sore throats and have used a variety of painkillers to help it. However, in recent months I've found that paediatric linctus works really well, throat spray and above all, honey and lemon in warm water. Hope this helps.

cultkid · 16/04/2020 19:02

@twilightermummy which ones do you use so I can try a combination
I think I used to take Ponstan when I was a teenager for it? And something called Zydol I need to google what that is in England
@DysonFury I am going to ask my husband to get me some i feel so rough
@user1498572889 gosh I think that must be the same for me I am very poorly
@crankyhousewife thank you I have found that the paracetamol hasn't even helped my fever at all
@Wattagoose90 I don't think so but that's an interesting idea I had it before and I was very very ill afterwards I was extremely anaemic and needed multiple iron transfusions

Thank you everyone I am so grateful for the love I have felt very sorry for myself today and also very worried so it means a lot
I'm sorry if I haven't replied directly to you all xxx

I have no other advice to add, but, wow it sounds really painful and hope you get a call back sooner than later. Hope you feel better soon x

Sh05 · 16/04/2020 19:12

If the GP hasn't been in touch yet ask them if you can do a video call, they did this with my little one. She had a terrible rash come on suddenly, ( not the meningitis type) gp did a video call.

NoSoapAndGory · 16/04/2020 19:31

@cultkid you poor, poor thing.
Our doctors has put many posts out saying 'please do contact us'.

They are worried about other illnesses being missed and they have staff to deal with them.

Please ring your surgery again - sounds like you need some help ❤️❤️❤️

Scarlettpixie · 16/04/2020 20:03

I find strepsils or any kind of throat sweets or even just boiled sweets help a bit and keep sipping drinks. Hope you get some help with it from your GP and feel better soon.

Cocolapew · 16/04/2020 20:11

DD is still trying yo get over this. HUGE white spots on her tonsils, bright red throat and a swollen tongue and glands. She could hardly open her mouth.
She was diagnosed with tonsillitis over the phone but had been unwell even before the throat, headache, aches and fatigue, and I think she had strep. She was really ill with strep infection a few years ago, we though she had glandular fever.
She's only a few days left of antibiotics but I'm sure she'll need more.
She used the spray, paracetamol, ibruprofen and ice pops.
Hope you feel better soon, poor DD has been in agony.

cultkid · 16/04/2020 21:35

I am at the hospital now to see out of hours GP

Good result from 111! Hopefully you're thorough the worst now and you'll get some relief soon
