New book brought into the house

CurtainWitcher · 13/04/2020 19:37

Book delivered by Amazon. I put the packaging straight in the recycling, but brought the book straight into the house. It's now on the coffee table.
DH said I should have put it in the garage for 72 hours. Should i?

@AnnaNimmity I've just asked for it on the mumsnet branch. Or at least for MN to ask people to put a CV in the title of the OP in AIBU and chat branches so we can avoid those threads if we choose.

SpoonBlender · 16/04/2020 12:40

@Zaphodsotherhead Isn't that the basis of vaccination? That you get a tiny little bit of virus but not an overload, so your body reacts to the virus but without going into overdrive and then you have immunity?

Close enough to be dangerous. Vaccinations are performed with inactive - non infectious - forms of bug, or when there's no way to do that with weakened 'live' bugs. In the former case there's no way to get infected, it just primes your immune system. In the latter there's a tiny chance, but of course much less than that of getting the bug 'naturally' else it'd be worse then counterproductive.

So no, getting a small dose of natural active CV-19 from whatever source is a terrible plan. You'll likely just catch it.

Stellamboscha · 16/04/2020 13:49

I assumed the OP posted this as a joke. Never heard of anything so bonkers as putting a new book in a garage for 72 hours... unbelievable.

Stellamboscha · 16/04/2020 13:51

come onto mumsnet for a bit of escapism and every single fucking post is obsessed to the point of madness

This

Bobleywobley · 16/04/2020 15:27

Why do people get mad at science? Science says you could catch Covid 19 from the book, as it stays on surfaces for 3 days plus. It's a fact. It's not "twitchy", "bat shit" or "obsessive", it's fact. Do what you want with the info but it's not "mad" it's fact.
If you're not bothered about catching Covid 19, fine, but if you think you might die from it, maybe it's worth giving things a little wipe. No big deal.

Floatyboat · 16/04/2020 15:33

But science also says a "little wipe" might not help and heating in the oven is better.

Sandytoesfrecklednose · 16/04/2020 16:37

We don’t have space inside or a garage so we’re opening post/packages and displaying of packaging straight away. Then washing our hands. All of the storing things for 72 hours etc is impossible in a home that our family has outgrown with no garage, garden or outdoor space. Trying not to think about the likelihood of CV being on any of the things we’ve brought in to our house In this way because there’s literally nothing we can do about it here

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/04/2020 17:02

Thanks, SpoonBlender for the explanation. I knew there was a sensible reasoning behind why we shouldn't all just lick stuff in the supermarket to get a mild dose! I just didn't understand enough about how the whole thing works - better informed now, thanks again.

Taddda · 17/04/2020 08:34

(Don't shoot me!Confused)

I'm getting a delivery today- looked at the UPS tracking and it's coming from the Netherlands, via Germany...ordered it yesterday morning so bit of a quick hop!

I haven't been concerned about the shopping, bit of a wipe (sometimes!), but for some reason I'm a bit anxious about this one, unpack outside??

(FWIW I thought it would be coming from this country, next day delivery, probably not relevant...)

RedHelenB · 17/04/2020 09:56

The potency wears off over time too so the level at the start on a book would be lower than at 71 hours

eh?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 17/04/2020 10:05

Christ, it would never have occurred to me to isolate the shopping or post. I have been doing neither. I just can't start doing that, it feels a bit..insane somehow? Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like once you start going down that path you'll just become obsessed and worry yourself to death before corona gets you.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 17/04/2020 10:07

I am in the get a grip camp.

Taddda · 17/04/2020 10:12

I had a grip....

Now I'm at 'wobbly grip' stage! Shock

(Need to re affirm grip....)

Soeey I wrote that the wrong way round! Potency would decrease with time, so if someone with COVID19 had sneezed on it at the depot when packing it then by the time it reached you there would be very little chance of you getting it , even if you licked the spot that had been sneezed on. Just wash your hands after reading it and dobt pick your nose or bite your fingernails!

woodchuck99 · 17/04/2020 10:16

So no, getting a small dose of natural active CV-19 from whatever source is a terrible plan. You'll likely just catch it.

It would be a terrible idea to do it deliberately as you could end up getting a higher dose than you bargained for and be seriously ill. Personally, it means I'm not too worked up over accidentally touching something that may have been exposed to COVID over 24 hours ago though. Quarantining everything for days is totally impractical for most people and I'm not sure what the point of a quick wipe is anyway. It's unlikely to kill the virus if it's not dead already so what's the point?

Taddda · 17/04/2020 10:22

even if you licked the spot that had been sneezed on

Well that's my cornflakes in the bin...!

RedHelenB · 17/04/2020 10:27

Sorry!

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/04/2020 11:02

One of my customers just tested positive (he's a paramedic). I served him on my till three days ago. My grip tells me that I am very very unlikely to have caught anything from him and I am going to work as normal, because if we self-isolated every time we thought we'd been any where near in contact with the virus, most of us would never leave home.

And that way madness lies.

Rockbird · 17/04/2020 12:09

I'm more interested to know where all the wipers are getting their alcohol wipes 'for a quick wipe down'?

woodchuck99 · 17/04/2020 15:31

I thought that too.
