New book brought into the house

Book delivered by Amazon. I put the packaging straight in the recycling, but brought the book straight into the house. It's now on the coffee table.
DH said I should have put it in the garage for 72 hours. Should i?

And no I wouldn’t clean or quarantine a book but I probably had it and didn’t mind catching it as we are reasonably health and I wanted it out of the way. Unfortunately some people will die despite being young and health so a calculated risk.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 13/04/2020 20:14

Madness.

Tulipstulips · 13/04/2020 20:14

Things that have been delivered, I should add. We’re not doing it with our shopping as I can’t be arsed and it would massively feed my germphobia. I am aware that it’s inconsistent and illogical, but we have to make our own compromises with precautions, and this is mine.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 13/04/2020 20:15

Do you think supermarket workers can wait 72 hours before they handle goods to be out on the shelves. Imagine having empty shelves and a full warehouse there would be an outcry.

TimeAintNothing · 13/04/2020 20:16

We are pouncing voraciously on every amazon package that comes!

Same here! The post is the highlight if a very long day and the postie/any delivery drivers get a heroes welcome with DC up at the windows waving and cheering followed by squabbling over whose turn it is to open it.

Frozenfan2019 · 13/04/2020 20:17

@Inthemuckheap thanks for being so patient and polite with me. Actually despite what I posted (which I accept could be read as me thinking we are in lockdown until a vaccine is found) I know a vaccine will take months and we won't be in lockdown that long.

The reason I said what I said was in response to a poster who said "if it's that easy to catch you're going to catch it one way or another" it is very easy to catch but with careful behaviour we can avoid it until a vaccine is found and people should be trying to do that. As I said in my first post I wouldn't quarantine a book but I would assume packaging could be infected and unpackage and discard wrapping before washing my hands.

PleasantVille · 13/04/2020 20:19

You do seem to be taking things a bit too far. Doesn't logic tell you that if the virus was on point that everything needed to be kept in a garage for 72 hours everyone on the planet would have it by now, all the Amazon workers would have it, all the supermarket staff, all the posties and courier staff?

BreathlessCommotion · 13/04/2020 20:19

The world has gone mad. The reason most people are cleaning shopping or quarantining deliveries is because it gives them a feeling of control over something that they have no control over. Which is scary.

You don't need to quarantine anything.

CrocodileFondue · 13/04/2020 20:20

We are opening packages, throwing away wrapping, quarantining contents and washing hands. It's probably only a small risk but just not worth it as we are all vulnerable in our family.

Frozenfan2019 · 13/04/2020 20:20

@shastabeast please read my follow up post. Also please don't call me naive and then say you've probably had it and are now immune. We don't even know how long immunity post virus lasts, there have been several people who seem to have recontracted the virus anyway. So actually who knows what will happen.

LatteLarrys · 13/04/2020 20:22

I genuinely despair at some of the quite frankly, mental, queries in here right now.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 13/04/2020 20:22

The. Bottom line is that yes the virus can survive in packages ..

So really depends on how much you cannot risk catching this ..

So if you have serious underlying health issues then wipe and clean EVERYTHING.. if you are young and healthy then probably not a major issue .

HopefullyAnonymous · 13/04/2020 20:23

Absolutely bonkers!

Although I’m just disappointed that this isn’t a thread about the appearance of a mystery book.

Frozenfan2019 · 13/04/2020 20:24

Doesn't logic tell you that if the virus was on point that everything needed to be kept in a garage for 72 hours everyone on the planet would have it by now

The logic tells me that people who work in packaging/logistics/retail are at very high risk and many of them will.have had it. We know some people are asymptomatic. Many of them are wearing gloves now. The virus has only existed in this country probably since January and we've been encouraged to practice extremely good hand hygiene for most of that time so I think it's likely that had we not known about it then yes, by now, most of us would have had it.

KindKylie · 13/04/2020 20:26

We haven't been doing anything of the sort!

Avoiding close contact with other humans with the virus and frequent handwashing - after being out, before eating and going to the loo (as per) - is what makes a difference.

If you wash your hands before you eat then it doesn't really matter does it?

BreathlessCommotion · 13/04/2020 20:27

My dad is in the shielding group and he is washing the shopping. Because he's not lost the plot.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 13/04/2020 20:27

Quarantine and lockdown is absolutely not to protect us till a vaccine is available. It is to allow us to catch it at a rate at which the NHS can cope and treat us.

opticaldelusion · 13/04/2020 20:28

I really think you need to disinfect each individual page too.

StCharlotte · 13/04/2020 20:28

One of the many many experts on TV this morning said it only lives on paper or card for half an hour which surprised me to be honest, and which is why it's all so confusing as no two experts seem to agree on anything.

Frozenfan2019 · 13/04/2020 20:28

If you wash your hands before you eat then it doesn't really matter does it?

I put my hands to my face a lot without thinking, lots of people do.

BreathlessCommotion · 13/04/2020 20:28

*isn't. Argh He isn't washing the shopping.

BreathlessCommotion · 13/04/2020 20:30

I do too @Frozenfan2019. But the point isn't to stop us getting it. I've most likely got it right now. It's not great, but I'll survive. The vast majority of us will. People on here are acting like it will kill everyone who contracts it.

Frozenfan2019 · 13/04/2020 20:30

@ImFreeToDoWhatIWant you're right and I wish I hadn't said that. I know we are not waiting indefinitely for a vaccine. It was in response to a particular post implying we are all gonna get it anyway. What I meant to say was that I will be trying to avoid it until a vaccine is found, I don't want it, I'm not prepared to take a calculated risk with an illness that can be avoided if possible.

EricaNernie · 13/04/2020 20:31

my dm has a newspaper delivered every day,
touch wood the delivery company are trying to be safe.

AuldAlliance · 13/04/2020 20:31

Logic might also suggest that, in light of recent events, it would be wiser to listen to German scientists than what Chinese ones are allowed to say right now.
