New book brought into the house

CurtainWitcher · 13/04/2020 19:37

Book delivered by Amazon. I put the packaging straight in the recycling, but brought the book straight into the house. It's now on the coffee table.
DH said I should have put it in the garage for 72 hours. Should i?

I wouldn't have but strictly speaking it could be carrying covid-19. We got new books a few days ago and read them straightaway. If you are worried put it in now and wipe table down then wash your hands.

BeetrootRocks · 13/04/2020 19:40

Well it wouldn't bother me at all.

Are you putting food the the garage for 72 hours?

DramaAlpaca · 13/04/2020 19:40

Personally I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are concerned wash your hands, wipe the book and the coffee table with hand sanitiser or diluted washing up liquid, then wash your hands again. Job done.

Macncheeseballs · 13/04/2020 19:42

I'm not sure people on mumsnet are the people to ask

CurtainWitcher · 13/04/2020 19:43

Thanks. Area cleaned and the book's in the garage. Feel better for that!

CurtainWitcher · 13/04/2020 19:45

Yes, food is put in the garage, unless it's fridge or freezer, which are cleaned and put away.

Blimey, has common sense been locked down too?

CurtainWitcher · 13/04/2020 19:45

Why aren't MNers the people to ask?

OP posts:
PegasusReturns · 13/04/2020 19:46

Wouldn’t bother me.

I sort of feel like if I have to start wiping everything down/putting into quarantine then I’d rather just be done with it all.

ALittleBirdhouse · 13/04/2020 19:46

I thought hard surfaces/plastic/stainless steel etc was 72 hours. Paper and card just 24 hours? Though the book cover may be laminated of course.

CurtainWitcher · 13/04/2020 19:47

What do you mean, Lidon?

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 13/04/2020 19:47

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

TW2013 · 13/04/2020 19:47

When was it dispatched? No one will have touched the book itself since it was dispatched. Can you take the 72 hours from then?

Boshmama · 13/04/2020 19:48

I think people are losing their minds. In the nicest possible way - get a grip.

TheSheepofWallSt · 13/04/2020 19:48

Honestly- if it’s that easy to catch, you’re going to catch it one way or another. Might as well be now...

ThaQuilomum · 13/04/2020 19:49

Have had a few deliveries of books. Packaging straight into the bin, wash hands and start reading the book. Chances of corona virus being on the book are tiny.

Frozenfan2019 · 13/04/2020 19:52

TheSheepofWallSt this would be true if they weren't trying to get a vaccine. The point of lockdown is for us to avoid it if possible until a vaccine is found. They also now think we may not be immune for very long once we've had it so no point trying to get it out the way.

I wait 72 hrs for fresh unpackaged things like fruit in case people have touched it in the shop. If it's in a box I just was my hands after opening the packaging. With a book I would just assume hand hygiene would cover it.

Seriouslyastounded · 13/04/2020 19:53

I’d think DH had gone mad if he put deliveries in the garage to quarantine

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 13/04/2020 19:55

I think for safety you should burn it, it will kill the virus for sure...

TheWordmeister · 13/04/2020 19:57

Sorry but this seems very ott to me. It wouldn't occur to us to do this.

We are pouncing voraciously on every amazon package that comes!

Inthemuckheap · 13/04/2020 20:03

FFS the point of lockdown is not until a vaccine is found. If that were the case we'd be in lockdown until kingdom come. I'm not even going to explain why we're in lockdown because if you don't know now, you never will.

OP your DH is being ridiculous. How on earth do you think those of us still working (front line healthcare) feel when we read some of these threads.

I do wish common sense was a teachable skill.

We’re quarantining things packaged in card for at least 24 hours and things wrapped in plastic for 3 days. The chances of them harbouring CV is minute but still possible. I’m sure it seems ridiculous to some but it’s easy to do in our case so why not?

Namelesswonder · 13/04/2020 20:11

Honestly it wouldn’t bother me. But I’m not disinfecting shopping or post or putting things in the garage for 72 hours. Some reports out of China are now suggesting that the virus doesn’t live on hard surfaces, while some German scientists are saying it can live for 5 days. I’m going with China on this one, and so far no infection in my house.

ShastaBeast · 13/04/2020 20:11

@Frozenfan2019 mwhahaha the naivety. Vaccine will be a year away at least. It’s going to be difficult to avoid for so long unless you live in remote location and don’t go out. I think they have repeated release and reinstate lockdowns as numbers go down and then back up. The hit on the economy would be too much to lockdown until vaccination.
