Is this a reasonable or unreasonable thing to do.

2 mile car journey required.

Couple had a sarnie on a blanket whilst the dog "zoomed" around.

All these people on about car accidents and breakdowns.. Modern cars and v empty roads reduce these risks massively, plus the journey in this instance is 2 miles. I nearly broke my ankle yesterday stepping off the sofa where I had been standing to vacuum up a spider (hysterical dd or I'd have left it). I stepped onto her trainers which were lying on the floor and went over on my ankle. Shall we all sit v still and quiet, eat raw soft food and sleep downstairs just in case of accidents?

onlinelinda · 13/04/2020 22:41

People need to use their brains. This couple isn't doing any wrong, IMO. They are not infecting anyone.

Purpleartichoke · 13/04/2020 23:48

Home Depot is a big hardware store. There is a small hardware store near my parents home, but if what they need isn’t carried there, they have to drive well over 50 miles to get to a decent sized hardware store. The Home Depot is even further.

Once we were visiting and my husband had to get a new laptop for work reasons. He had to drive 300 miles round trip to get to a store that had one in stock that day.

Osirus · 14/04/2020 00:00

I don’t see why not if it is only used by yourself. I walk a mile to my own land and spend a lot of time there. No one else is there or can see me as it mostly woodland.

h3av3n · 14/04/2020 00:25

This is totally fine, you're allowed to drive a reasonable distance to exercise eg walk your dog which this counts as. It's also very worth it for your dog who would be getting better exercise than walking on a lead

Lincolnfield · 14/04/2020 17:51

Mind your own business! Everyone is a fucking policeman now. One of my neighbours has an elderly dog with an inoperable cancer in his leg. She has always walked up the road to our local park but now Dylan is struggling to get up the hill so she is drivIng him up, letting him enjoy a little trot around the field and driving him home.

She rang me in tears because two busybody women had approached her as she was helping him out of the car and berated her about driving to the park. She only lives down the road from the park and has walked there for years. She was just helping her poor old dog!

Christ’s sake! Everybody, OP included MIND your own business!

My dog is reactive to traffic, we love in a busy built up area with at least a hundred people walking about. We tried walking at 5am and at midnight. Still busy. She’s come into season. Usually we walk her in a friends field when she is but it’s 1.5 miles along busy roads to get there. Walking her is not an option. Being around other dogs is not an option. We are walking her in the field

Kayagh · 14/04/2020 18:39

It IS actually allowed to drive a short distance to walk your dog especially if walking from home would mean you can’t safely social distance as is the case in many built up areas why are people so jealous of others right now. A dog walk is essential end of story dogs have the right to exercise and if owners choose to rent a field so they can exercise their dog safely good for them they are doing nothing wrong at all this question was asked two weeks ago of the gov if only people actually listened instead of filtering so they could hate hate hate get a life people.

Kayagh · 14/04/2020 18:40

Good on you and it’s totally acceptable unless you belong to the let’s make this nightmare worse for people coz we are jealous of them

thecatsabsentcojones · 14/04/2020 18:44

At the moment my parents are driving a mile to avoid a particularly busy path way so they can get out to deserted fields, in doing this it means they avoid infection and potentially passing it on. It’s a similar scenario to this.

Anyone else feel that people have lost the plot to adhere to the rules so badly that they’ve lost all sense of judgement? What risk is someone posing in a private field totally alone?

jackie2669 · 14/04/2020 19:01

If the police stop them they wouldn't take that as an excuse so could end up with a fine.

Alsohuman · 14/04/2020 19:05

If the police stop them they wouldn't take that as an excuse so could end up with a fine

Did your crystal ball tell you that? How many police do you think we’ve got out in the sticks?

Mummadeeze · 14/04/2020 19:12

Sounds like a lovely idea if they can afford it and safer than going to the park

windysocks · 14/04/2020 19:57

Its fine to do this - whats the problem theres no one else there!

notasportymum · 14/04/2020 20:18

niugboo · 14/04/2020 20:25

@CuriousaboutSamphire you’re selfish and better still breaking the law. Hope you get fined next week.

HugeAckmansWife · 14/04/2020 20:52

jackie no they wouldn't, because they are not breaking the law.

cologne4711 · 14/04/2020 20:53

In any event people might consider the £30 fine worth it to get away from other people!

cologne4711 · 14/04/2020 20:55

And what is wrong with putting your dog on a lead, and walking it for a mile or so around the streets

No space.

Now what we could do is tell car drivers in urban areas that pedestrians have priority on the roads while this is going on. That would be a game-changer.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 14/04/2020 20:55

@niugboo how is curious breaking the law?

Lincolnfield · 14/04/2020 21:01

@millerjane. ‘ can see it both ways. I care about the couple and I care about the NHS. Just wanting to inform myself re if their actions increased or deacreased risk.’

Even under the mental capacity act, people have the right to make unwise decisions- I’m not suggesting for one minute these people are unwise but you clearly feel you have the right to judge.

You sum it up perfectly. You want to ’inform yourself.’ Why? As I said before it’s none of your business! This pandemic has turned into a Stasi state with people busily policing other people.

Ask yourself - do you have to come into close contact with these people? is their behaviour a direct threat to you or your immediate family? Have you any evidence that if they become ill their care will impact on your or your family’s access to healthcare?

If you can’t answer yes to these questions then just butt out.

You’ve also commented that these people have got money. So what? When did that become your business?

I’m sick and tired of people questioning other people’s behaviour. It’s horrible. Do what you believe is right for yourself and your household and stop judging/commenting on other people.

Uygop · 14/04/2020 21:02

First Brexit and now this. I'm getting really sick of the British. Wish I wasn't one myself.

Springersrock · 14/04/2020 21:05

Someone asked this on our local police Facebook page (well, not the sandwich bit, but hiring a dog walking field) and they replied to say this would be fine if they can’t exercise their dog safely from home

DH takes our dog to work with him - he runs his own business and there’s a huge, securely fenced area of waste ground with his premises where he takes the dog for a good off lead run (he keeps the front gates locked so the public can’t get in).

Lincolnfield · 14/04/2020 21:05

@Uygop - I so agree! I’m actually Irish from Co.Galway but lived in England for many years. I have decided, however, that the world has gone mad.

Xenia · 14/04/2020 21:11

Sounds fine to me. If you can hire land to grow veg on (allotment) and are allowed to travel to do garden work there you can drive to your own woodland to exercise or whatever.
