How many tins of tomatoes, bags of pasta, bars of soap, bags of flour.... have you actually used so far?

Just that...

To the panic buyers, hoarders:

How many tins of tomatoes, bags of pasta, bars of soap, bags of flour, Packets of rice, loaves of bread, kitchen rolls, toilet rolls, packets of super noodles (!) cans of baked beans, cans of Heinz soup, bottles of liquid soap.... have you actually used up so far? Are you struggling to replenish your stocks?

AIBU to think it's all still sitting in your cupboard/freezer?

(if you have got a family of 8, you don't need to answer! Grin)

I've eaten quite a lot of our pasta - at least twice a week for 4 weeks. We have used about 12 toilet rolls. As others have said, I didn't buy canned fruit and extra beans to eat now; they are for if we have to self-isolate for 2 weeks or stocks are low later on.

Aderyn19 · 13/04/2020 14:22

I've used them and bought more as shops got back to normal stock levels (family of 6 though). I still have canned soup but will use them at some point. I haven't bought anything that I won't use

TabbyMumz · 13/04/2020 14:24

I dont think we are anywhere near half way through this, so I'm still keeping my pasta, rice, tinned food as a safety net in case we get tighter restrictions.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 13/04/2020 14:26

Also for vulnerable people the tinned food enabled them to stay in and not risk a supermarket shop (or having food delivered which has been touched by a possibly infected person).

FrenchBoule · 13/04/2020 14:26

I bake my own bread so use quite a lot as sometimes bake for my neighbours.

Tins of tomatoes- I always used to buy a couple of packs at asda because never remember how many are left.

I also bulk buy tinned fish, toilet roll, pasta and passata when on the offer.
Have lots of bar soap as it’s my preferred gift for birthday/Christmas.

Nearest supermarket an hour away.

mochojoes · 13/04/2020 14:30

I didn't panic buy anything but always have a well stocked freezer & cupboards as we don't meal plan & are quite impulsive. During the shortages we had meat & fruit & veg boxes delivered & used up a lot of frozen & jar stuff. We did just run out of beans & tuna but getting a click & collect today & can restock & tbh the local supermarkets seem to have everything back in stock anyway.

Whathappenedtothelego · 13/04/2020 15:04

I always have kept a full storecupboard.
I would say that since eyeryone has been at home, our weekly consumption has been something like 4 pints of milk, 2-3 loaves of bread, one block of cheese, 2 tins of tomatoes, 2 tins of beans, 1 bag of potatoes, 1 bag of onions, 1 tin of tuna, 1 bag of pasta, 2 cartons of juice, 2 boxes of cereal, 12 eggs, a fair bit of flour. Plus all the fresh fruit, veg and meat that we are buying weekly.
We did run out of soap, but fortunately managed to buy more - everyone at home washing their hands "more often" has an impact.
I have been rationing the tinned tomatoes a bit - normally a staple of my cooking!

Cherrysoup · 13/04/2020 15:13

Ran out of flour and sugar this week having done more baking than usual. Went local to get more. I don’t use much pasta, so had a big jar full, but I just realised, once I’d made the sauce and base mince mix for a lasagna that I don’t have any sheets or eggs to make any. We always have a few tins of tomatoes because we make lots of curries etc.

I am finally working my way through the freezer and pantry, would love to actually need something! I didn’t do any panic buying, we’re fortunate to have some excellent local shops. I tend to buy hand soap when I see it, I’m a fan of Aldi’s rhubarb and rose and the vanilla and macadamia, so had a few stashed anyway.

Rockbird · 13/04/2020 15:17

We've used all of it except some flour which I'm saving for baking once the Easter crap is finished. Would love some soap though, we're running very low on that but it's still impossible to get hold of.

Rockbird · 13/04/2020 15:17

Easter crap being the chocolate, not the holiday. I'm a good Catholic girl! Blush

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/04/2020 15:28

I'm not a stockpiler but I bought 10 loo rolls in the middle of March - I normally only buy a pack of 4 as we're a 2 person household and out most of the day. I'm down to my last one Grin

GrolliffetheDragon · 13/04/2020 15:34

Didn't stockpile, but did do a big shop when DH had to self isolate as I could see households of those with symptoms having to isolate was on the cards.

But we've used two bags of flour (already had them), 5 cans of tinned tomatoes (already had them, make a lot of curries and pasta sauce), a bag of pasta (bought it), 4 bottles of handwash (bought them as we were running out from the extra hand washing), we already had toilet paper well stocked as we'd both bought large packs a few weeks earlier without knowing we were both doing so, still have plenty left.

Furrydogmum · 13/04/2020 15:36

I have 7 adult appetites to feed and use 5-10 tins of toms a week - I am down to 13 in the cupboard! We use around 14 loo rolls a week and a hand soap in each sink (3) last about 2 weeks - I wish I had bought more of everything!

RedskyAtnight · 13/04/2020 15:42

@SharonasCorona I recommend fish pie mix pasta bake

here

Hannah021 · 13/04/2020 15:56

Since the lockdown 2 tomato tins... I stay on my own though... (except for one week)... No pasta used yet... I prefer rice (i'd say 3cups in total).... 3 eggs... Lots of croissants and pita bread for breakfast... Even more lots of white chocolate bueno Blush.... And maybe 4 quick mix soups... 1 and a half pack of tea biscuits... Maybe 3 crisps?

RishiSunakFanClub · 13/04/2020 15:58

I'#m not a prepper or hoarder and rely on a supermarket delivery once a week.

Tins of tomatoes - none, I don't use it in my cooking.
Bags of pasta - none, I don't eat pasta.
Bars of soap - 1, still in use.
Bags of flour - enough to make some Yorkshire puddings and a couple of cakes..
Packets of rice - none, I don't eat rice.
Loaves of bread - 1 a week.
Kitchen rolls - 1 still in use.
Toilet rolls - 1 - still in use.
Packets of super noodles - none, I don't eat noodles.
Cans of baked beans - 2 200g tins.
Cans of Heinz soup - none but 2 of Baxter's Consomme soup.
Bottles of liquid soap - none, I don't use it.

I am not struggling to replenish stocks because by staying up until midnight I've managed to get a Tesco delivery once a week.

Coquohvan · 13/04/2020 15:58

@SharonasCorona
Seafood spaghetti delicious just add garlic, chilli, if you like a bit of heat.
Pan fry your seafood in a little olive oil garlic, splash of white wine, if you like/have some. Or white wine stock gel.
Garnish with parsley or chives when ready.

lockitdown · 13/04/2020 16:00

About 7 tins tomatoes
3 spaghetti and 2 twirls pasta pkts
beans - several tins
toilet rolls - maybe a 28 pk and a 9 pck
soap - 2 bars and 3 handwash

LondonJax · 13/04/2020 16:00

We didn't panic buy. But we did have roughly a half pack of 9 loo rolls left when lockdown started. It's hard to tell for sure as we have a downstairs loo and a bathroom

We had also had a four pack of kitchen roll.

I managed to get two packs of pasta and bag of rice in the shopping two weeks ago. We've just finished the pasta and are almost at the end of the rice.

Just started on a new pack of loo roll and the kitchen roll is almost out.

The freezer was filled up last week and I've always got cans of tomatoes and beans in as I cook with them regularly so I pick up a can as I use them.

All the extra that I did buy was a couple of cans of potatoes - which I've not used yet and three jars of pasta sauce, one of which I'm using today.

We use bars of soap and started on a fresh pack this week. Can't remember when I bought that to be honest. It certainly wasn't in the last month.

HoomanMoomin · 13/04/2020 16:05

Not hoarder or panic buyer, a Brexshit prepper. Since lockdown announced I’ve used about 5,5 bags of flour and at least 7 packs of pasta. Also about third of my egg powder.
I didn’t stock up on tinned tomatoes or beans, so didn’t use them.
I’m not happy that I had to run down my stockpile so rapidly though. It means I need to start topping it up earlier than I anticipated. And yes, I expect after Brexshit will fully come to force, shortages will be worse than right now.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 13/04/2020 16:07

Sharon I'd do a risotto probably. Depending on which fish is in mix, I'd pull out any smoked fish for a kedgeree.

Pastaforall · 13/04/2020 16:09

We have used about 6 tins of tomato’s I’m lucky because Ocado had an offer on not long before this started so we had loads. 2 bags of pasta- none left now which I’m gutted about! I love reheated chicken pasta for lunch.
My OH has an obsession of bulk buying loo roll and always has- he is very pleased with himself now although slightly concerned we are using up his stockpile. We had 30 rolls when this started and haven’t bought any since so probably down to about 20.
We have managed to get bread, chicken, potatoes, steak and vegetables alright so mostly living off different combinations of them until the shelves restock! It’s making us eat differently to normal which is probably best. Strangely enough lots of broccoli no one seems to want that!

recrudescence · 13/04/2020 16:20

We use around 14 loo rolls a week

So two each a week? Are you eating them?!

SansaClegane · 13/04/2020 16:21

I didn't panic buy, but I'm one of those people who always have a bit extra "just in case".
I had three freezer drawers full of bread / bread products. This is because I often buy reduced stuff and chuck it in the freezer, as I have 3 DC who are usually'starving' after school and I don't often have time to go shopping multiple times a week (this is all back in the day when we had a real life, of course) so I could just get something out of the freezer and we'd be sorted. We have made a HUGE dent in the bread stock.
Ditto milk - down to one packet of long life milk now.
Haven't used tins all that much so far apart from tuna and baked beans.
Using quite a bit of loo roll as my youngest, who has ASD, has started to soil himself every day since the lockdown started, and cleaning him up can be quite an undertaking. That said, my loo roll stock was probably all bought in Jan-Feb time.
I even found two unopened bottles of hand sanitizer in my cupboard! And probably half a dozen packets of paracetamol.
But honestly it's down to me being a generally anxious person and always worrying I'll run out of things so I always buy some extra. Not in the recent weeks though as I'm not an arsehole!
