How many tins of tomatoes, bags of pasta, bars of soap, bags of flour.... have you actually used so far?

Just that...

To the panic buyers, hoarders:

How many tins of tomatoes, bags of pasta, bars of soap, bags of flour, Packets of rice, loaves of bread, kitchen rolls, toilet rolls, packets of super noodles (!) cans of baked beans, cans of Heinz soup, bottles of liquid soap.... have you actually used up so far? Are you struggling to replenish your stocks?

AIBU to think it's all still sitting in your cupboard/freezer?

(if you have got a family of 8, you don't need to answer! Grin)

Family of 7 here but youngest only 7 months so 6 really.
We didn't buy more than we normally do but Asda had tomato tins 4 for a £1 in January so bought a couple of cases then as we alway do when that offer comes up ( about twice a year). Since then we have gone through one case so 12 tins but most of our meals are tomato based and I cook from scratch daily so that's normal for us.
We get through 2 loaves a week and about 5 gallons of milk a week.
Rice I buy a large 10 kg bag every 6 months same with Chapatti flour.
Nothing in the freezer that isn't normally in there( pre lockdown).

Before all this began, I had a 24 pack of loo roll and 5 bottles of hand wash. We have used all the hand wash but not the loo roll.

I haven’t bought any pasta during this, but we’ve been short of tinned tomatoes and passata throughout, tried and failed to get them.

GinDrinker00 · 13/04/2020 13:52

Used loads actually but we cook from scratch. I do still however have 100 odd toilet rolls in the cupboard though. (Not from panic buying, from the Brexit days.)

Otherrooms · 13/04/2020 13:52

I did a big shop when work closed but the shelves were pretty bare.
Family of 4, no stockpiling.
We get through 4 cans toms , 2 loaves, 1 tin beans, 2 cans soup, 1 kitchen roll, 4 loo rolls... a week.
I could go on but it would be too dull!
We don't seem to get through much tbh.

We got a virus (suspected CV) just as stockpiling started, so we weren’t able to go to the shops and buy anything for 2 weeks. Now I’m glad we weren’t able to stock pile.

It’s been a good opportunity to use up cans and jars. Used some pasta sauce that expired in Aug 2018, tasted fine. Also out of date canned fruit.

Anyone got ideas for frozen fish pie mix? (Except a fish pie).

CaryStoppins · 13/04/2020 13:55

We go through loads! Even more so now no one is eating at school.

stuntbanana · 13/04/2020 13:56

Didn't panic buy as we always have plenty stored but we have used some of the store cupboard items and all of our food delivery from 2 weeks ago which was mainly fresh fridge items , have just picked up click and collect to last 2 weeks again mostly fresh and lots of items missing this time plus a few ridiculous replacements
Haven't bought loo rolls, tomato's , soap or pasta since lockdown as we had plenty but have used loads of all except pasta ( one meal spaghetti Bol )

recrudescence · 13/04/2020 13:57

I always have a spare or two of all of those things - hate to be on my last packet of anything. Since the lockdown I have been just been shopping pretty normally and still have a spare or two of all those things. However, I have stocked the freezer right up and bought some tinned food and UHT milk that I wouldn’t usually keep in. I’m working on the basis of having the ability to manage for 2-3 weeks without having to leave the house at all.

Nameofchanges · 13/04/2020 13:58

I will learn from this and be better prepared next time. I’m more aware now of what goes out of stock when people panic buy.

Melfish · 13/04/2020 14:00

SharonasCorona fish curry? No recipe here (rely on jars/packet sauces with curries) but you could bung in some veg with that too if you have any stray cans or relics from the freezer.

It really is!
I cleared my cupboards the evening before work closed as I knew we were going to be in the house for a while.
I didn't buy certain items when I went shopping the next day (pasta, soup, tomatoes) because we had some already.

What ingredients have you got for the fish pie ? Tinned/frozen stuff?
A mix of fish in a basic cheese sauce is lovely!
Cheese sauce (MILK, CORNFLOUR< CHEESE)
Mixed fish
(mix both together and put in dish)
Top with Mashed potatoes!
YUM!

I know of lots of people that were stockpiling from last year due to Brexit. Plus I know people that generally stockpile toilet roll and cleaning supplies. The second group are having huge bouts of anxiety because they can't replenish their stockpiles Confused

bloodywhitecat · 13/04/2020 14:01

Family of four, we didn't stockpile and have just replaced what we've used when and if we can, if we can't then we go without it. We did have a huge supply of loo rolls as my regular order from Who Gives A Crap came just as this all started so we still have 30 or so rolls in the spare bedroom.

justanotherneighinparadise · 13/04/2020 14:02

Nothing stockpiled here. I don’t remember running out of anything when the panic buying was happening but I do remember getting quite stressed about eggs.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 13/04/2020 14:03

I haven't hoarded any but use loads of pasta and chopped tomatoes. If I had hoarded it wouldn't be wasted surely (although I'd still feel guilty for depriving other people of cheap food they may rely on to feed their families) that stuff lasts for ever and is so easy to use up.

Otherrooms · 13/04/2020 14:04

We've been buying fresh veg/fruit weekly (and bread/milk.)

Good time to actually meal plan for a change!
I want to use up cans and packets if I can!

Family of three plus newborn, go through about 4 tins of tomatoes and six tins of beans a week, plus other tinned beans. We are veggie which probably helps? The panic buying has been a massive pain for me, with the maximums put on everything. Plus we’ve had to stop making our own bread (usually but 1.5kg of flour a week) because we can’t get the ingredients. Hovis tastes like bum!

Nameofchanges · 13/04/2020 14:06

I would not use up cans of fruit and veg now. We don’t know if there are going to be shortages later in the year if all this has disrupted harvests.

Noworrieshere · 13/04/2020 14:08

We are eating so much more now there are 5 of us at home all day. I wish I had stockpiled more spaghetti hoops, the 2 youngest love them on toast for lunch. There were only 2 tins on the shelf this morning in our local co-op and I only took 1, I couldn't risk leaving some other poor family with no spaghetti hoops.

Merigoround · 13/04/2020 14:10

I bought 3 packets of 18 loo rolls when home bargains reduced theirs to £3.99 a pack several months ago ( might have been summer last year). I still have 1 full pack left as we dont use a lot during the week normally. We are both key workers and Dd is also a key worker in a different industry so all out of the house most of the week anyway.
I cook mainly quick meals as we are all tired when we get in so pasta does feature quite a bit but DDs shop sells large packets of pasta cheaply anyway so we always have them. Add in a tin (or2) of tuna, one of sweetcorn and some mayo its a meal we are all happy to eat and often enough left over for lunch for at least one. We dont use tomatoes as a base as DD is sensitive to them .
Also soap is one of the things Ive gotten back into recently so have been buying the Xmas sets people have donated to charity shops . I have some lovely smelling ,good quality soaps keeping my airing cupboard and drawers nicely scented. It would take years of dedicated hand washing to run down my stocks. We are still on the original bar of soap I opened the week lockdown started.

DeathByBoredom · 13/04/2020 14:12

We haven't had to self isolate for two to three weeks yet so I'm leaving the stocks until that happens. Kids ate the emergency pandemic chocolate within days though.

Arrowfanatic · 13/04/2020 14:12

I had 24 loo rolls already and have a half dozen left. We use a lot of pasta so have probably gone through 2kg worth already.

Bread we use a loaf approximately every 2 days so loads. We use roughly 18 pints of milk a week so again quite a lot.

Bread flour around 1kg worth, one cakes worth of self raising flour.

1066vegan · 13/04/2020 14:15

I didn't panic buy but if I knew a few months ago what I know now, then I'd have bought a few extra tins of tomatoes every time I went shopping.

So many of our meals (veggie bolognese, chilli, various curries, stews and lots more besides) need 1 or 2 tins of tomatoes. We've been limiting ourselves to a weekly shop and the supermarket's 3 tin limit is really frustrating.

bloodywhitecat · 13/04/2020 14:18

I have never been more grateful to own chickens, we have 11 most of them ex battery hens, they are giving us between 5 and 7 eggs a day which is more than we can use so we sell them at the gate.
