I've just returned to MN after a fair absence (needed some advice about something) and see that this is about to become available. I won't be paying, but will you?

Don't bother! All you get is an editing function and fewer ads. Waste of money.

Witchcraftandhokum · 13/04/2020 09:26

Thanks Bezalelle. The whole thing is leaving a nasty taste in my mouth...

Also apologies...the vote thing wasn't around the last time I was here. Not sure how to disable it.

I'm reminded of Friends Reunited, early social media company who decided to add a paid for service to send Direct Messages.

Facebook was running at the same time. They didn't start charging for sending direct messages.

I think that specific choice was the death of Friend Reunited. So very poor idea of Mumsnet - there is absolutely nothing worth paying for here.

What this "premium" charge is, really, is charity. It is Mumsnet saying: if you can afford to pay us, please do.

Fightthebear · 13/04/2020 09:33

I’ve signed up. Not because I’m remotely bothered by the additional features but because I don’t want MN to go under.

Loss of advertising revenue because of coronavirus has caused some very longstanding publications to go bust Sad. There are not that many female friendly spaces on the internet, I’m happy to contribute to preserve it.

travailtotravel · 13/04/2020 09:37

I would happily pay for a while, but I use the android app, which won't get any of the feature benefits. While I might have paid anyway, because useful space, hard times for everyone etc etc, I'm not paying extra for nothing. It would much better to have just run a crowdfunder!

Fightthebear · 13/04/2020 09:39

I would also have been happy with a crowdfunder.

Witchcraftandhokum · 13/04/2020 09:55

It bothers me that a site that had a revenue of £8. 6m can get into trouble so quickly. I also remember the numerous data breaches so giving them my financial details is not high on my list of priorities.

I haven't noticed any difference to be honest. But I'm happy to pay a fiver a month to help stop one of my favourite pastimes from disappearing.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 13/04/2020 09:59

I’m afraid I won’t be - I’m not paying £50/year for an editing function and no ads.

Would have been happy to do a crowdfunder

Fightthebear · 13/04/2020 10:02

But as the income stream is only advertising and not subscription based then it can run out of cash very quickly.

I don’t see it as paying extra for nothing, it’s paying to help keep MN going. I’ve had a lot of support from MN over the years and don’t mind paying in now.

But I agree with pp about the crowdfunder, I would have preferred that I think.

MamaBearLockdown · 13/04/2020 10:16

I can't justify to myself paying for something I only use when I am bored, I can find plenty of other sites to use instead.

I think some people are dangerously invested in this forum. It was more apparent when it was less common to name change regularly but some people really treat this as real life and their only social interaction. I find it a bit scary. Paying will only make it worst.

That said, MN is not a charity, they can charge whatever they want, that in itself is absolutely fine.

Beldon · 13/04/2020 10:23

Pointless thread as it will get deleted soon. You will be referred to as a ‘previously banned poster’ on the delete message. Just so happens that everyone always agrees they not going to pay and they asking too much money for a very basic site

Rockbird · 13/04/2020 10:25

I've paid it, for the time being at least. I'm not bothered by extra functions and haven't noticed any anyway. I don't use the app, I use the mobile site.

JellyFishSquish · 13/04/2020 10:31

I paid, and happy to do so.

I do not want to lose MN. It is worth MORE than a fiver a month to me.

OlaEliza · 13/04/2020 10:32

I won't be paying, but have MNHQ looked at the £350k PM wage bill yet?

Oysterbabe · 13/04/2020 10:32

You just logged on for advice. Sure.

CodenameVillanelle · 13/04/2020 10:34

I've signed up and I'll keep it for 2-3 months. I don't want mumsnet to go under and I don't want to use any alternative site.

CodenameVillanelle · 13/04/2020 10:34

I am enjoying seeing it without ads though! It's not £5 worth of enjoyment but it is nice

ShowOfHands · 13/04/2020 10:39

I'm happy to pay while things are tough. Don't care about editing and ads. MN has been helping me in myriad ways for 16 years and it's an acknowledgement of that.

There are other threads about this BTW. Did you read those?

(you don't give your financial details to MN but a third party)

Sadiesnakes · 13/04/2020 10:51

Why do people keep saying they cba paying for less ads and editing? Surely people can see the bigger picture? 🤔

Umnoway · 13/04/2020 10:53

I’d have been happier donating to a site like Just Giving. I’m not subscribing to a site that doesn’t benefit my family in the way similarly priced sites such as prime and Netflix do.

dangerrabbit · 13/04/2020 10:55

Bit concerned about the historical data breaches and linking it to my bank details tbh. Not sure I trust mumsnet to look after my data securely so won’t be subscribing.

Cornettoninja · 13/04/2020 11:02

Another one who would have added to a go fund me or something but I can’t bring myself to ‘buy’ a product that is inherently useless to me.

I get they have staffing and overhead costs but most of the country is in the same boat and I struggle to believe they can’t make savings elsewhere. I always got the impression MNHQ was modelling themselves on the google offices or something and frankly I won’t fund that unless they’re proposing something of actual value. I never read their articles, use their discounts or browse their jobs. My use of MN is 99% forums so I consider this as a space that is perfectly able to be funded by adverts and what they need the money for isn’t anything that I would use.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/04/2020 11:04

I’m not paying £50/year for an editing function and no ads.

You aren't even getting that though.

A 15 second editing function and fewer ads, not "no ads".
